Book The Impact of 1 1 IPads on Teachers and Teaching

Download or read book The Impact of 1 1 IPads on Teachers and Teaching written by David Caponigri and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of how 1:1 iPads (1 student to 1 iPad) impacted preparation, delivery and feedback for teachers. In particular, this study investigated delivery, efficiency, student engagement, assessment/feedback, and intervention and how 1:1 iPads allowed for new approaches to lesson delivery that would otherwise be difficult to impossible without 1:1 iPads. This study showed how in the 2013-14 school year in a Midwestern Suburban 7th grade Pre Algebra classroom the teacher graded and analyzed the class's work far faster than previously possible. Once the teacher started to become more efficient, the teacher had an opportunity to update teaching practices to match the needs of the classroom. The teacher prepared for lessons in a way that was not previously possible, including meeting with each student with more frequency and improved accuracy of what students needed help and with what topics. The teacher became so efficient that he was even able to run a hybrid classroom.

Book The Impact of 1 1 IPad Devices on Student Engagement in the High School Classroom

Download or read book The Impact of 1 1 IPad Devices on Student Engagement in the High School Classroom written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A technology initiative was adopted in a Minnesota suburban school district integrating 1:1 iPad devices into the elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the impact 1:1 iPad devices had on student engagement within the high school classrooms. The research questions focused on how educators are using the 1:1 iPad adoption to impact student engagement, the most and least effective iPad engagement strategies found within the 1:1 adoption, and the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the engagement strategies employed when using iPads in a 1:1 adoption. Through quantitative student and teacher survey results and qualitative student and teacher focus groups, the researcher was able to answer the research questions and provide further findings beneficial to consider when integrating 1:1 iPad technology into high school classrooms. Results showed teachers are using strategies within their classrooms of which students find engaging. These include review games, note taking, and test taking. These were also found to be effective according to student survey results. Less effective strategies included graphic organizers and podcasts. Effective apps used with these strategies were Schoology, Notability, YouTube, and Kahoot! Less effective apps used with these strategies were NEWSELA and Google Calendar. Students and teachers agreed the iPads had an impact on student engagement when the effective strategies and apps were used. They also agreed games and social media caused major distractions to students. Student and teacher perception were different in regard to the apps used in the classroom to impact engagement. The apps students found engaging were used by very few teachers. In addition, students and teachers disagreed on the preference of using several different apps for tasks such as obtaining assignments and posting homework. Students felt it was too confusing when all teachers used different apps for this purpose. This study revealed 1:1 iPad devices impact student engagement within the suburban high school setting. The strategies and apps used within the classroom impact the level in which students are engaged. This research is valuable to educators, administrators, and school district officials who are contemplating or have adopted a 1:1 iPad technology integration."--Leaves 3-4.

Book The Effects of 1 1 IPads on Students and Teachers

Download or read book The Effects of 1 1 IPads on Students and Teachers written by Teresa Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looked at the pros and cons of a 1:1 iPad program in a high school setting. It looked at student GPA and student engagement in their studies. The researcher was looking for a pattern between iPads and increase in student GPA, and an increase in student engagement. This study looked at the main question: Does a 1:1 iPad program increase and encourage student learning and their engagement in the classroom? This study also answers the research questions: What are the pros of using an iPad? What are possible cons of using an iPad in the classroom? How does an iPad improve student achievement? The results of the data were compiled in graphs and anecdotally. There was not a strong correlation between iPads and an increase in GPA after six weeks of use. Seventy-two percent of the students did find them helpful and only 10% of students did not find them helpful. Fifty percent noticed and increase in engagement in their classes. The students had an average change of -0.02 in their GPA. Females had a slightly higher change in GPA at -0.06. Overall, the iPad is a powerful tool, but can only be used successfully if the teachers are trained well, if there is a solid infrastructure in place in the school, and if students are taught to use them responsibly.

Book One to one IPad Effects on a 6th Grade Math Classroom

Download or read book One to one IPad Effects on a 6th Grade Math Classroom written by John Glime (J.) and published by . This book was released on with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study documented the effects a 1:1 iPad setting had on a 6th grade math classroom. The documentation is divided into three areas: effects on the teacher, the students' point of view, and math chapter test results. This study is the result of questions asked after being assigned a 1:1 set of Apple's tablet computer, the iPad. A study of literature relating to 1:1 computing, iPads, and educational technology issues with a focus on elementary mathematics was done. The study was conducted in an urban Title I school in Utah. The qualitative aspect of this study focused on a single classroom of twenty-three students and their teacher. The quantitative aspect of this study involved two other 6th grade classrooms within the same school. The study found that there are significant teacher challenges when implementing a 1:1 program. The personal motivations of the students played a major role in academic outcomes. Transference of knowledge from iPad to student was not guaranteed. The teacher needed to play a significant role in the scaffolding of new information acquisition to supplement the software abilities of the iPad. In this classroom, no evidence of improved chapter test results was found as an outcome of 1:1 iPad integration. The author recommends that iPads no longer be purchased for 1:1 technology integration programs."--author's abstract.

Book Re Designing Learning Contexts

Download or read book Re Designing Learning Contexts written by Rosemary Luckin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean by the word ‘context’ in education and how does our context influence the way that we learn? What role can technology play in enhancing learning and what is the future of technology within learning? Re-Designing Learning Contexts seeks to re-dress the lack of attention that has traditionally been paid to a learner’s wider context and proposes a model to help educators and technologists develop more productive learning contexts. It defines context as the interactions between the learner and a set of inter-related resource elements that are not tied to a physical or virtual location. Context is something that belongs to an individual and that is created through their interactions in the world. Based on original, empirical research, the book considers the intersection between learning, context and technology, and explores: the meaning of the concept of context and it’s relationship to learning the ways in which different types of technology can scaffold learning in context the Learner-Centric ‘Ecology of Resources’ model of context as a framework for designing technology-rich learning environments the importance of matching available resources to each learner’s particular needs the ways in which the learner’s environment and the technologies available might change over the coming years the potential impact of recent technological developments within computer science and artificial intelligence. This interdisciplinary study draws on a range of disciplines, including geography, anthropology, psychology, education and computing, to investigate the dynamics and potential of teacher-learner interaction within a learning continuum, and across a variety of locations. It will be of interest to those teaching, researching and thinking about the use of technology in learning and pedagogy, as well as those involved in developing technology for education and those who use it in their own teaching. Book A Study of the Experiences of Middle School Teachers During the Initial Stages of a 1 1 IPad Trial

Download or read book A Study of the Experiences of Middle School Teachers During the Initial Stages of a 1 1 IPad Trial written by Craig William Nicholls and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980's educational institutions around the globe have invested large amounts of both time and money into the exploration and implementation of a vast range of technological programs. This study focused on the recent and rapidly proliferating phenomenon, the 1:1 iPad program. These programs are characterised by each learner and teacher in a classroom using an iPad as part of daily routine. Since Apple released the first iPad in 2010 there have been studies and trials of this technology in classrooms in a variety of configurations. An investigation into the experiences of educators during these trials has been missing from the discussion and as such this study focused on the experiences of the teacher within the initial stages of a 1:1 iPad trial. It aimed to gain a better understanding of teachers' attitudes towards the use of iPads in their classrooms and their experiences working in a 1:1 environment. The investigation occurred at the Country campus of Castle College, a multi-campus independent school found in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. It focused on the experiences of six middle school (Years 5 - 8) teachers from this campus. In 2012, Castle College implemented a 1:1 iPad trial with all Years 5 - 11 students and teachers at the Country campus. This decision represented a significant change in approach for the college and potentially steep learning curve for the teachers involved. In conducting this qualitative case study, data was collected during the initial six months of the iPad trial through observations, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Taking this approach created an opportunity to explore the participants' experiences when integrating iPads into their classes for the first time. This study found that implementing a 1:1 iPad trial, perhaps unsurprisingly, increased the workload of the teachers involved. The participants generally felt that the teaching in a 1:1 iPad environment allowed them to move their students through the curriculum with greater depth and speed. This was achieved through students accessing online resources, creating content and an increase in communication (created by students having easy access to their email). In what could be considered a surprise, these benefits created a situation where an increased workload was generally deemed acceptable by the participants. This study also confirmed the findings of other studies; in that the importance of professional learning when implementing a new technological initiative into a school cannot be overstated. The study does, however, bring a new slant to the discussion in the form of introducing technological domestication theory and the potential to use this to sculpt and target individual professional learning experiences for educators. This however was not the main focus of this study, and further investigation into this area, including developing a matrix of behaviour and a skills checklist, would be beneficial.
