Book The Immunogenetics of Dermatologic Diseases

Download or read book The Immunogenetics of Dermatologic Diseases written by Nima Rezaei and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to investigate the broad spectrum of genetic changes in immunological processes involved in cutaneous diseases. One of the main goals of immunogenetic studies is finding susceptibility genes for complex diseases. This can provide an insight into the pathogenesis of the condition in a way that is not easily achievable through other kinds of studies. Thus they are a rational initial step for generating hypotheses about disease pathogenesis. This may especially benefit dermatology, a field notorious for having too many diseases with unknown etiologies. Immunogenetic investigations have made targeted treatment strategies possible for diseases such as psoriasis and pemphigus. Even though these strategies have revolutionized the management of chronic dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, still there are a lot of unanswered questions. For instance, psoriasis patients respond very differently to each of the commercially available biological agents. This diversity could be partially explained by the differences in the sets of genes responsible for disease induction in each individual. Thus whole genome sequencing strategies, if feasible at individual levels, might help in tailoring these targeted treatments based on specific genetic backgrounds. Our intention in preparing this book was to explore the broad spectrum of the genetic aspects of immunological processes involved in cutaneous diseases. We have tried to cover most areas of dermatology where enough studies were available to gather a chapter. Still, there is a substantial lack of knowledge on the immunogenetics of many dermatological conditions. We hope that this book would encourage the investigators to fill these gaps of knowledge.

Book Skin Immune System SIS

Download or read book Skin Immune System SIS written by Jan D. Bos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-04-10 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunodermatology is a field covering the majority of skin diseases, including the most prevalent onesin the general population. The Second Edition of Skin Immune System (SIS) discusses immune-mediated skin diseases and disease groups in which the SIS plays a role. It covers major findings in immunophysiology and immunopathology that have occurred since the introduction of the First Edition in 1990. As the subtitle indicates, the Second Edition adds a new emphasis on cutaneous immunology, and also includes new information on immune-based therapeutic interventions and methods, such as phototherapy and the immunological therapy of skin cancer. The book contains Part I, with introductory chapters; Part II, with descriptions of the cellular elements; and Part III, which describes the humoral and molecular components of SIS. Part IV follows to integrate the facts described in Parts II and III into concepts of pathophysiology. It contains a number of concepts entitled "response patterns" that describe how the constitutional elements of SIS work together. New in this edition are the descriptions of immunodermatological diseases individually described in Part V. Part VI is also all new and summarizes principles of immunotherapy.

Book The Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Diseases

Download or read book The Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Diseases written by Nadir R. Farid and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many developments in immunology have occurred over the past 10 years that give us a better understanding of the immune system and its dysfunctions. Refined mapping of the major histocompatibility complex MHC; elucidation of its gene structure and polymorphism, as well as the molecular basis of MHC restriction; the arrangement, expression, and regulation of immunoglobulins; definition of the structure of the T cell receptor and organization of its genes; and the characterization of soluble factors involved in cell/cell interactions and cloning of their genes are among the major accomplishments. Volumes I and II build on these developments in basic immunology to introduce animal models of various diseases, corresponding human studies, and the genetic analysis of autoimmune traits at the patient population level. The book will be a tremendous asset to immunologists, geneticists, and physicians in various areas of clinical subspecialties.

Book Immunology of Psoriatic Disease

Download or read book Immunology of Psoriatic Disease written by Eva Reali and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psoriasis is a chronically relapsing inflammatory skin disorder affecting about 2% of the worldwide population. The disease is associated with important systemic manifestations, including cardiovascular comorbidities and metabolic syndrome. In addition, about 30% of patients develop joint inflammation known as psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Our knowledge on the pathogenesis of psoriasis has dramatically expanded in the last decade, suggesting the existence (or co-existence) of both auto-immune and auto-inflammatory components. Skin lesions develop from a complex interplay between keratinocytes, vascular endothelium, dendritic cells, and T cells, generating a self-sustaining inflammatory cycle. Within this cycle, epidermal CD8+ T lymphocytes specific for self-antigens may represent the major autoimmune mechanism. Despite the recent progress in the comprehension of the pathogenesis of psoriasis many questions remain open, ranging from the plaque-initiating events to the characterization of the autoimmune /autoinflammatory components of the disease. The mechanisms that link cutaneous psoriasis to its extra-cutaneous and systemic manifestations also remain vague. In this Research Topic we invited top scientists to summarize the front-line research in the field of immunology of cutaneous psoriasis and its systemic and joint manifestations. Our intention was to integrate the pillar concepts of psoriasis immunopathology with the most novel insights, aiming at providing an advanced view of this rapidly evolving and fascinating field.

This book was released on 2006-06-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a 2003 workshop, this study describes current public and private programs and recommends ways to recruit and retain more women and underrepresented minorities into clinical research, especially physician-scientists and nurses. Federal sponsors should improve data collection, evaluate existing training programs, and increase the diversity of study section review panels. Public and private sponsors should create funding mechanisms with flexible career paths, and universities and professional societies should both play enhanced roles in fostering diversity. A significant push is needed to recruit minorities into nursing and provide more clinical research training for nurse-scientists, nursing students, and nursing faculty.

Book Skin Diseases After Organ Transplantation

Download or read book Skin Diseases After Organ Transplantation written by Sylvie Euvrard and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 1998 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ transplantation has been successfully performed over the last 35 years and the number of organ allograft recipients is steadily increasing. Long-term immunosuppression, necessary for good graft function, inevitably induces undesired effects (particularly infectious and neoplastic ones) among which cutaneous ones are very frequent and potentially life-threatening. This book deals with all aspects of cutaneous disorders that may be encountered in the setting of organ transplantation. It reflects the pioneering work performed since long by Dermatologists in Lyon, in collaboration with teams specialised in kidney, heart, lung, liver and pancreas transplantation.

Book Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Download or read book Systemic Lupus Erythematosus written by Robert G. Lahita and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 1155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systemic lupus erythematosus (S.L.E.), commonly called lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect virtually any organ of the body. In lupus, the body's immune system, which normally functions to protect against foreign invaders, becomes hyperactive, forming antibodies that attack normal tissues and organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, and blood. Lupus is characterized by periods of illness, called flares, and periods of wellness, or remission. Because its symptoms come and go and mimic those of other diseases, lupus is difficult to diagnose. There is no single laboratory test that can definitively prove that a person has the complex illness. To date, lupus has no known cause or cure. Early detection and treatment is the key to a better health outcome and can usually lessen the progression and severity of the disease. Anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-malarials, and steroids (such as cortisone and others) are often used to treat lupus. Cytotoxic chemotherapies, similar to those used in the treatment of cancer, are also used to suppress the immune system in lupus patients. A new edition of this established and well regarded reference which combines basic science with clinical science to provide a translational medicine model. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a useful reference for specialists in the diagnosis and management of patients with SLE, a tool for measurement of clinical activity for pharmaceutical development and basic research of the disease and a reference work for hospital libraries. - Highly illustrated and in full color throughout - Basic science section expanded to allow the reader to focus on the newest techniques in molecular medicine and its effects on disease expression and treatment - Clinical aspects and new drugs will be covered in great detail providing a useful reference to both experienced clinicians and physicians with an interest in lupus in their clinical practice
