She learned very early in life to take care of the old, young or sick family members. When she left home, she had no intention of being a caretaker ever again. She married a Navy man, Riley, and supported him in every aspect of military life. But, when his alcoholism became too insane, she left him. Fifteen years later she makes a difficult choice to take care of her estranged, near-death, alcoholic husband. It was not an easy decision, but, for her, it was the only right decision. After all, she thought, it's only a short detour in my life. How long could he really last? LindaJane waited for Riley to die while taking care of his every need. She waited. But when he would just get to the end, he would miraculously survive. He seemed to be immortal. She dubbed him The Immortal Alcoholic. She struggles with the moral and legal issues of trying to keep him alive, or letting him die, while he clearly states he would rather be dead than sober. LindaJane seeks help and/or advice but receives very little from medical professionals and family. She finds the strength she needs from comments to the blog she created (Immortal Alcoholic) that she hoped would connect her to others in her situation. The comments inspire her to create a support group. She writes this book, The Immortal Alcoholic's Wife, and a Workbook for Caretakers of End-Stage Alcoholics. She learns to find her passion in writing and helping others through her experiences, disappointments, frustrations and humor. In spite of care-taking an immortal alcoholic, she is thriving. This book is her journey from childhood through Riley's hospice. It shares the knowledge she gains and the frustration from being inside the insanity. Anyone with an alcoholic in their life will find this book helpful, humorous and encouraging. Readers will find this book as a road map through the maze of alcoholic insanity.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Vampire Academy and Bloodline series returns with the second installment in her acclaimed Age of X series. Religious investigator Justin March and Mae Koskinen—the beautiful supersoldier assigned to protect him—have been charged with investigating reports of the supernatural and the return of the gods, both inside the Republic of United North America and out. With this highly classified knowledge comes a shocking revelation: Not only are the gods vying for human control, but the elect—special humans marked by the divine—are turning against one another in bloody fashion. Their mission takes a new twist when they are assigned to a diplomatic delegation headed by Lucian Darling, Justin’s old friend and rival, going into Arcadia, the RUNA’s dangerous neighboring country. Here, in a society where women are commodities and religion is intertwined with government, Justin discovers powerful forces at work, even as he struggles to come to terms with his own reluctantly acquired deity. Meanwhile, Mae—grudgingly posing as Justin’s concubine—has a secret mission of her own: finding the illegitimate niece her family smuggled away years ago. But with Justin and Mae resisting the resurgence of the gods in Arcadia, a reporter’s connection with someone close to Justin back home threatens to expose their mission—and with it the divine forces the government is determined to keep secret.

Book excerpt: In China, both opium and alcohol were used for centuries in the pursuit of health and leisure while simultaneously linked to personal and social decline. The impact of these substances is undeniable, and the role they have played in Chinese social, cultural, and economic history is extremely complex. In Intoxicating Manchuria, Norman Smith reveals how warlord rule, Japanese occupation, and political conflict affected local intoxicant industries. These industries flourished throughout the early twentieth century, even as a vigorous anti-intoxicant movement raged. Through the lens of popular Chinese media depictions of alcohol and opium, Smith analyzes how intoxicants and addiction were understood in this society, the role the Japanese occupation of Manchuria played in their portrayal, and the efforts made to reduce opium and alcohol consumption. This is the first English-language book-length study to focus on alcohol use in modern China and the first dealing with intoxicant restrictions in the region.

Book The Immortal Series

Download or read book The Immortal Series written by Gene Doucette and published by Gene Doucette. This book was released on with total page 1064 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three books in the Immortal Series, in one box set! Book one: Immortal Surviving sixty thousand years takes cunning and more than a little luck. But in the twenty-first century, Adam confronts new dangers—someone has found out what he is, a demon is after him, and he has run out of places to hide.Worst of all, he has had entirely too much to drink. Immortal is a first person confessional penned by a man who is immortal, but not invincible. In an artful blending of sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and humor, Immortal introduces us to a world with vampires, demons and other “magical” creatures, yet a world without actual magic. Book two: Hellenic Immortal An oracle has predicted the sojourner’s end, which is a problem for Adam insofar as he has never encountered an oracular prediction that didn’t come true . . . and he is the sojourner. To survive, he’s going to have to figure out what a beautiful ex-government analyst, an eco-terrorist, a rogue FBI agent, and the world’s oldest religious cult all want with him, and fast. And all he wanted when he came to Vegas was to forget about a girl. And maybe have a drink or two. Book three: Immortal at the Edge of the World In his very long life, Adam had encountered only one person who seemed to share his longevity: the mysterious red-haired woman. She appeared throughout history, usually from a distance, nearly always vanishing before he could speak to her. In his last encounter, she actually did vanish—into thin air, right in front of him. The question was how did she do it? To answer, Adam will have to complete a quest he gave up on a thousand years earlier, for an object that may no longer exist. If he can find it, he might be able to do what the red-haired woman did, and if he can do that, maybe he can find her again and ask her who she is . . . and why she seems to hate him.
