  • Pages : 635 pages

Book excerpt: Robert Hughes begins where American art itself began, with the Native Americans and the first Spanish invaders in the Southwest; he ends with the art of today. In between, in a scholarly text that crackles with wit, intelligence and insight, he tells the story of how American art developed. Hughes investigates the changing tastes of the American public; he explores the effects on art of America's landscape of unparalleled variety and richness; he examines the impact of the melting-pot of cultures that America has always been. Most of all he concentrates on the paintings and art objects themselves and on the men and women - from Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins to Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe, from Arthur Dove and George Bellows to Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko -awho created them. This is an uncompromising and refreshingly opinionated exploration of America, told through the lens of its art.

Book At the Back of the North Wind Illustrated Edition

Download or read book At the Back of the North Wind Illustrated Edition written by George MacDonald and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book by George MacDonald. It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond is a very sweet little boy who makes joy everywhere he goes. He fights despair and gloom and brings peace to his family. One night, as he is trying to sleep, Diamond repeatedly plugs up a hole in the loft wall to stop the wind from blowing in. However, he soon finds out that this is stopping the North Wind from seeing through her window. Diamond befriends her, and North Wind lets him ride on her back, taking him on several adventures. Though the North Wind does good deeds and helps people, she also does seemingly terrible things. On one of her assignments, she must sink a ship. Yet everything she does that seems bad leads to something good. The North Wind seems to be a representation of Pain and Death working according to God's will for something good. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence".

  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2003-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780802036629

Download or read book Haunted Texts written by William Evan Fredeman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begun by young rebels committed to revolutionizing the creative arts, Pre-Raphaelitism has moved from the margins of nineteenth-century art and literature to the vanguard of interdisciplinary studies. The term is now used to denote the Pre-Raphaelite, Aesthetic, and Decadent movements in art, culture, and literature, but it has remained as difficult to define as ever. Haunted Texts attempts to meet the challenge of defining and illustrating the full spectrum of Pre-Raphaelitism. Working with a diverse range of Pre-Raphaelite poetry, painting, decorative arts, book illustration, and political prose, the ten contributors to Haunted Texts pursue the critical strategies of such leading figures as Christina Rossetti and Dante Rossetti, William Morris and Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater, and Aubrey Beardsley. The essays consider the bibliocritical issues of archival research concerning the personal letters and diaries of the Rossetti family; the technological issues that challenge conventional methods of scholarship; the gender issues concerning constructions of identity derived from the changing conceptions of love, desire, anxiety, and brotherhood; and the interdisciplinary cultural issues that transgress the borders of high art and popular culture. Haunted Texts pays tribute to the scholarship of Professor William Fredeman who devoted much of his career since the 1950s to establishing a critical foundation that would enable future scholars to define their understanding of the complexity of Pre-Raphaelitism.

Book Phantastes Illustrated

    Book Details:
  • Author : George MacDonald
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-10-05
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Phantastes Illustrated written by George MacDonald and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In MacDonald's fairy tales, both those for children and (like this one) those for adults, the "fairy land" clearly represents the spiritual world, or our own world revealed in all of its depth and meaning. At times almost forthrightly allegorical, at other times richly dreamlike (and indeed having a close connection to the symbolic world of dreams), this story of a young man who finds himself on a long journey through a land of fantasy is more truly the story of the spiritual quest that is at the core of his life's work, a quest that must end with the ultimate surrender of the self. The glory of MacDonald's work is that this surrender is both hard won (or lost!) and yet rippling with joy when at last experienced. As the narrator says of a heavenly woman in this tale, "She knew something too good to be told." One senses the same of the author himself.

This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past quarter-century the Telecom industry in the US has been a veritable laboratory of business and marketing practice. The truth of such well-known ideas as ""Creative Destruction"" are being borne out as companies rise and fall in wave after wave of innovation, while the limits of others, such as product bundling, are also demonstrated every day. The result has been a Wild West of marketing activity that only intensifies as the changes continue. Intense competition is forcing prices down and will certainly eventually lead to the destruction of several large household-word telecom companies. Who will survive? Industry expert Arthur Middleton Hughes explains what these Telecom enterprises can do to continue to exist. Their salvation rests not in their technologies, Hughes explains, but in their marketing strategies. In highly readable, everyday language, Hughes provides a strategic marketing map for every player in the industry, showing how to apply sophisticated marketing tools to each industry sector and each technology.
