Book Rethinking the High Renaissance

Download or read book Rethinking the High Renaissance written by Jill Burke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perception that the early sixteenth century saw a culmination of the Renaissance classical revival - only to degrade into mannerism shortly after Raphael's death in 1520 - has been extremely tenacious; but many scholars agree that this tidy narrative is deeply problematic. Exploring how we can reconceptualize the High Renaissance in a way that reflects how we research and teach today, this volume complicates and deepens our understanding of artistic change. Focusing on Rome, the paradigmatic centre of the High Renaissance narrative, each essay presents a case study of a particular aspect of the culture of the city in the early sixteenth century, including new analyses of Raphael's stanze, Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling and the architectural designs of Bramante. The contributors question notions of periodization, reconsider the Renaissance relationship with classical antiquity, and ultimately reconfigure our understanding of 'high Renaissance style'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacopo de’ Barbari’s View of Venice, a woodcut first printed in the year 1500, presents a bird’s-eye portrait of Venice at its peak as an international hub of trade, art, and culture. An artistic and cartographic masterpiece of the Renaissance, the View depicts Venice as a vibrant, waterborne city interconnected by canals and bridges and filled with ornate buildings, elaborate gardens, and seafaring vessels. The contributors to A View of Venice: Portrait of a Renaissance City draw on a high-resolution digital scan of the over nine-foot-wide composite print to examine the complexities of this extraordinary woodcut and portrayal of early modern Venetian life. The essays show how the View constitutes an advanced material artifact of artistic, humanist, and scientific culture. They also outline the ways the print reveals information about the city’s economic and military power, religious and social infrastructures, and cosmopolitan residents. Featuring methodological advancements in the digital humanities, A View of Venice highlights the reality and myths of a topographically unique, mystical city and its place in the world. Contributors. Book excerpt: "Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo (c. 1486-c.1542) painted some of the most beautiful and fascinating ceramics produced in Renaissance Italy, often drawing on classical mythology for his subjects. He was also a poet, and commented on the tempestuous events of his time--including the infamous Sack of Rome in 1527--both in verse and allegorically in the imagery of the dishes and plates he decorated. This book is a comprehensive study of Xanto as a remarkable painter of Italian Renaissance tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica) decorated with narrative subjects (istoriato), a poet and a loyal follower of the condottiere Francesco Maria I della Rovere, Duke of Urbino. It contains a full transcription of his sonnets with a parallel English translation. A list of maiolica by or attributable to Xanto is another first. Through his ceramics, beautiful and interesting in themselves, and here superbly reproduced, it provides an enlightening cross-section of the dawn of the early modern era"--Provided by publisher.

Book Fra Angelico to Leonardo

Download or read book Fra Angelico to Leonardo written by Hugo Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sumptuously illustrated catalogue charts the history of drawing in Italy from 1400, just prior to the emergence in Florence of the classically inspired naturalism of the Renaissance style, to around 1510 when Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian were on the verge of taking the innovations of earlier masters, such as Leonardo and Pollaiuolo, in a new direction. The book highlights the key role played by drawing in artistic teaching and in how artists studied the human body and the natural world. Aspects of regional difference, the development of new drawing techniques and classes of graphic work, such as finished presentation pieces to impress patrons, are also explored. An extended introduction focusing on how and why artists made drawings, with a special emphasis on the pivotal role of Leonardo, is richly illustrated with examples from the two collections that elucidate the technique and function of the works. This is followed by catalogue entries for just over 100 drawings where discussion of their function and significance is supported by comparative illustrations of related works, such as paintings.
