Book excerpt: How electric light created new spaces that transformed the built environment and the perception of modern architecture. In this book, Sandy Isenstadt examines electric light as a form of architecture—as a new, uniquely modern kind of building material. Electric light was more than just a novel way of brightening a room or illuminating a streetscape; it brought with it new ways of perceiving and experiencing space itself. If modernity can be characterized by rapid, incessant change, and modernism as the creative response to such change, Isenstadt argues, then electricity—instantaneous, malleable, ubiquitous, evanescent—is modernity's medium. Isenstadt shows how the introduction of electric lighting at the end of the nineteenth century created new architectural spaces that altered and sometimes eclipsed previously existing spaces. He constructs an architectural history of these new spaces through five examples, ranging from the tangible miracle of the light switch to the immaterial and borderless gloom of the wartime blackout. He describes what it means when an ordinary person can play God by flipping a switch; when the roving cone of automobile headlights places driver and passenger at the vertex of a luminous cavity; when lighting in factories is seen to enhance productivity; when Times Square became an emblem of illuminated commercial speech; and when the absence of electric light in a blackout produced a new type of space. In this book, the first sustained examination of the spatial effects of electric lighting, Isenstadt reconceives modernism in architecture to account for the new perceptual conditions and visual habits that followed widespread electrification.

  • Author : B. J. Smith
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-01-09
  • ISBN : 1317876164
  • Pages : 502 pages

Download or read book Environmental Science written by B. J. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983. This book aims to cover the requirements for the Business and Technician Education Council Level Three & Four Units in Environmental Science. At the same time it was recognised that there was a real need for a suitable book for those studying Building, Quantity Surveying, Architecture and Environmental Health at 1st degree level. This book should therefore form a useful first year introductory text for both ‘A’ level and BTEC entrants. The book contains a large number of worked examples in the text as well as many student questions at the end of each chapter. Experiments have been included, not with the intention of being exhaustive, but to give ideas. Some areas of work lend themselves to student practical work better than others so that some inbalance is inevitable. ‘Environmental Science’ should give students an introduction to the environmental problems in construction and the methods which may be used to provide a satisfactory and economic solution.

Book ITNG 2022 19th International Conference on Information Technology New Generations

Download or read book ITNG 2022 19th International Conference on Information Technology New Generations written by Shahram Latifi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the 19th International Conference on Information Technology - New Generations (ITNG), 2022. ITNG is an annual event focusing on state of the art technologies pertaining to digital information and communications. The applications of advanced information technology to such domains as astronomy, biology, education, geosciences, security, and health care are the among topics of relevance to ITNG. Visionary ideas, theoretical and experimental results, as well as prototypes, designs, and tools that help the information readily flow to the user are of special interest. Machine Learning, Robotics, High Performance Computing, and Innovative Methods of Computing are examples of related topics. The conference features keynote speakers, a best student award, poster award, and service award. . This publication is unique as it captures modern trends in IT with a balance of theoretical and experimental work. Most other work focus either on theoretical or experimental, but not both. Accordingly, we do not know of any competitive literature.

Book Designing With Light

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of lighting design Designing With Light: The Art, Science, and Practice of Architectural Lighting Design is a comprehensive introduction to the intelligent use of lighting to define and enhance a space. The book explores all aspects of the process, including aesthetics, technology, and practicalities, in a clear, concise manner designed to provide the reader with a full working knowledge of lighting design. Color illustrations throughout demonstrate the real-world effects of the concepts presented, and the companion website offers video animations and exercises to better illuminate the art and science of lighting. The book addresses the considerations that should be a part of any designer's process, and provides thorough guidance on meeting the various demands with smarter design. Lighting is an essential element of interior design, and despite its ubiquity, is difficult to truly master. A designer with a fundamental and conceptual understanding of light is empowered to create simple, typical spaces, or work intelligently with lighting consultants on more complex projects. Designing With Light contains special discussions on color, light, and health, as well as the latest information on energy efficient lighting, control systems, and other technologies. Topics include: Physics, psychology, and perception of light Current and future lighting technology Communication, documentation, and the design process Sustainability, daylighting, and energy efficiency The book also contains an entire chapter on building and energy codes, as well as practical guidance on photometrics and calculations. Lighting can make or break an otherwise well-designed space, so designers need the background to be able to think intelligently about illumination factors during all stages of the process. With comprehensive coverage and thorough explanation, Designing With Light is a complete resource for students and professionals alike.
