Book Health Economics of Well being and Well becoming across the Life course

Download or read book Health Economics of Well being and Well becoming across the Life course written by Rhiannon T. Edwards and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions about spending on health and social care often fall into silos, determined by disease or the cause of death. Spending on health and social care is rarely assessed along the lines of a life-course model. It is also ironic that many public health interventions provide relatively convincing value for money, yet we still only spend approximately 5% of the NHS budget on prevention. Health Economics of Well-being and Well-becoming across the Life-course follows a life-course model with chapters aligned to pregnancy and early years; adolescence; working age; and older age phases of life. It enables the reader to think about older age in a different way and asks them to consider where we should be investing in cost-effective interventions to support the prevention of chronic disease, disability, and premature death later in life. Academically, it brings the rigour of evidence review to an eminently readable book using infographics and take-home messages. The economic and health economics evidence presented, drawing on systematic review evidence where possible, provokes discussion of the tension between prevention and cure in our health and social care systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American historians of his generation have had as much influence in both the academic and popular realms as Alan Brinkley. His debut work, the National Book Award–winning Voices of Protest, launched a storied career that considered the full spectrum of American political life. His books give serious and original treatments of populist dissent, the role of mass media, the struggles of liberalism and conservatism, and the powers and limits of the presidency. A longtime professor at Harvard University and Columbia University, Brinkley has shaped the field of U.S. history for generations of students through his textbooks and his mentorship of some of today’s foremost historians. Alan Brinkley: A Life in History brings together essays on his major works and ideas, as well as personal reminiscences from leading historians and thinkers beyond the academy whom Brinkley collaborated with, befriended, and influenced. Among the luminaries in this volume are the critic Frank Rich, the journalists Jonathan Alter and Nicholas Lemann, the biographer A. Scott Berg, and the historians Eric Foner and Lizabeth Cohen. Together, the seventeen essays that form this book chronicle the life and thought of a working historian, the development of historical scholarship in our time, and the role that history plays in our public life. At a moment when Americans are pondering the plight of their democracy, this volume offers a timely overview of a consummate student—and teacher—of the American political tradition.

Download or read book The Zoroastrian Flame written by Sarah Stewart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries, from the birth of the religion late in the second millennium BC to its influence on the Achaemenids and later adoption in the third century AD as the state religion of the Sasanian Empire, it enjoyed imperial patronage and profoundly shaped the culture of antiquity. The Magi of the New Testament most probably were Zoroastrian priests from the Iranian world, while the enigmatic figure of Zarathushtra (or Zoroaster) himself has exerted continual fascination in the West, influencing creative artists as diverse as Voltaire, Nietzsche, Mozart and Yeats. This authoritative volume brings together internationally recognised scholars to explore Zoroastrianism in all its rich complexity. Examining key themes such as history and modernity, tradition and scripture, art and architecture and minority status and religious identity, it places the modern Zoroastrians of Iran, and the Parsis of India, in their proper contexts. The book extends and complements the coverage of its companion volume, The Everlasting Flame.

Book Parsis in India and the Diaspora

Download or read book Parsis in India and the Diaspora written by John Hinnells and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-22 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parsis are India's smallest minority community, yet they have exercised a huge influence on the country. As pioneers in education in nineteenth century India, and as leading figures in banking and commerce, medicine, law and journalism, they were at the forefront of India's industrial revolution. Parsis were also at the heart of the creation of the Indian National Congress in the nineteenth century and contributed some of the great leaders through into the twentieth century. This book, written by notable experts in the field, explores various key aspects of the Parsis. It spans the time from their arrival in India to the twenty-first century. All contributions are based on original research and most of them use hitherto unexplored primary sources. The first part of the book analyzes the topic of Parsi migration from very different points of view; the second part presents leading Parsi personalities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The final part is a set of studies of the Parsi traditional community in Bombay and an examination of three different diasporas. The concluding chapter, by John R. Hinnells, shows the range of contributions of Parsis to modern India and also in the diasporas, where the Zoroastrian religion is practiced in more countries around the globe than at any time in its history of more than 3,000 years.

Book Economics and Alcohol

Download or read book Economics and Alcohol written by Marcus Grant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, general levels of alcohol consumption had risen considerably in all parts of the world. In association with this, there was a proliferation of alcohol-related problems such as liver disease, drunkenness offences, marital disharmony and employment difficulties. Many factors influence the probability of alcohol addiction and the habits of drinking; they include age, sex, race, occupation and income. Economic aspects of the use and misuse of alcohol had been attracting increasing attention during the early 1980s. Politicians and scholars alike had drawn attention to the benefits of a vigorous alcohol industry on the one hand, and on the other, the costs of providing medical, social and educational services for those suffering from alcohol-related problems. Originally published in 1983, the real nature of the relationship between economics and alcohol is explored in detail for the first time in this book. It argues for increased participation by economists in the processes of social policy decision-making and considers the key issues of cost-benefit analyses, control policies, taxation and programme efficiency. No easy solutions are provided, but a host of unjustified assumptions about this subject are clarified. This book paved the way for substantial future collaboration between economists and those involved in alcohol studies.
