Book The Hypersonic Revolution Volume 2 From Scramjet to the National Aero Space Plane

Download or read book The Hypersonic Revolution Volume 2 From Scramjet to the National Aero Space Plane written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypersonic revolution has been a particularly American one, borne of the national pursuit of transonic and supersonic flight technology. True, it does have both domestic and international dimensions, in the prophecy of Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth, and Konstantin Tsiolkovskiy at the beginning of the twentieth century, and in the prescient (if impractical) studies of Eugen Sanger and Irene Bredt (later Irene Sanger-Bredt) near mid-century. But if its inspiration was some- times international in flavor, its execution was American--from the early pre-X-15 studies of the 1950's through the pioneering missions of Columbia in 1981. Primarily, the hypersonic revolution grew out of the traditional federal-industrial partnership that had benefitted American aviation since the First World War. It germinated and flourished amidst the laboratories of the Air Force, Navy, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and its successor, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the major aerospace manufacturers. Not merely an aerodynamic revolution, the hypersonic revolution--like the supersonic breakthrough and the drive for the "modern", airplane before it--involved the creative integration and exploitation of diverse technologies.

Book excerpt: NOTE; NO FURTHER DISCOUNT ON THIS PRINT PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Signficantly reduced list price The technologies for the reentry and recovery from space might change over time, but the challenge remains one of the most important and vexing in the rigorous efforts to bring spacecraft and their crews and cargo home successfully. Returning to Earth after a flight into space is a fundamental challenge, and contributions from the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate in aerodynamics, thermal protection, guidance and control, stability, propulsion, and landing systems have proven critical to the success of the human space flight and other space programs. Without this base of fundamental and applied research, the capability to fly into space would not exist. Book Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion

Download or read book Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion written by Ahmed F. El-Sayed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive basics-to-advanced course in an aero-thermal science vital to the design of engines for either type of craft. The text classifies engines powering aircraft and single/multi-stage rockets, and derives performance parameters for both from basic aerodynamics and thermodynamics laws. Each type of engine is analyzed for optimum performance goals, and mission-appropriate engines selection is explained. Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion provides information about and analyses of: thermodynamic cycles of shaft engines (piston, turboprop, turboshaft and propfan); jet engines (pulsejet, pulse detonation engine, ramjet, scramjet, turbojet and turbofan); chemical and non-chemical rocket engines; conceptual design of modular rocket engines (combustor, nozzle and turbopumps); and conceptual design of different modules of aero-engines in their design and off-design state. Aimed at graduate and final-year undergraduate students, this textbook provides a thorough grounding in the history and classification of both aircraft and rocket engines, important design features of all the engines detailed, and particular consideration of special aircraft such as unmanned aerial and short/vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. End-of-chapter exercises make this a valuable student resource, and the provision of a downloadable solutions manual will be of further benefit for course instructors.

Book Space Transportation

Download or read book Space Transportation written by Walter Edward Hammond and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This practical book gives young professionals all the information they need to know to get started in the space business. It takes you step-by-step through processes for systems engineering and acquisition, design and development, cost analysis, and program planning and analysis. You'll find the systems engineering and design process that applies to all space transportation systems, then the overall system architecture considerations that also apply to all space transportation systems. There is also detailed coverage of space launch vehicles by class, including the current space shuttle, other manned reusable systems, expendable systems, and future systems. A companion CD-ROM contains the Operations Simulation and Analysis Modeling System software.

Download or read book The Hypersonic Revolution Case Studies in the History of Hypersonic Technology Volume 3 The Quest for the Orbital Jet The National Aero Space Plane Program 1983 1995 written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groucho Marx once said that 80% of success was just showing up. In a program with such lofty goals as sending ajet aircraft into orbit, one might hope to define success in more demanding terms. Yet in many ways, the National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program, which originated in the early 1980s with the intention of designing and fabricating ajet aircraft that could fly fast enough to attain orbital velocity, is considered a success by many of the participants.1 They contend that by "showing up," NASP survived long enough to produce what many deem critical technologies for hypersonic flight (that is, speeds above Mach 5, or roughly 3600 miles per hour), and it reinvigorated an interest in aerospace that was somewhat dormant (and certainly underfunded) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
