Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of 2 The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a French Gothic novel published as three volumes in 1831, was originally titled Notre-Dame de Paris-1482 because the story takes place in that year and centers around the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. An early English translator renamed his edition of the novel after Quasimodo, the cathedral's deformed bell-ringer in the story. That name has stuck for all English editions. One of Victor Hugo's most well-known works, this novel has been adapted to film more than a dozen times, including by Disney. Hugo wrote this story partly to celebrate the Gothic architecture of Paris, which was methodically being torn down in favor of more modern styles. As a result, there are large sections of this unabridged text that go into great detail on the architecture of the time. The novel was so well received in France that it led to a Gothic revival architectural movement and restoration efforts on the cathedral that are responsible for preserving its original style.

Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame was written in 1831, at a time when the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was falling into disrepair. This epic novel helped spark a preservationist movement that led to the cathedral being restored to its full glory. Set in 1482, the story tells of how four men—the hunchbacked bell-ringer, Quasimodo; the archdeacon of Notre Dame, Claude Frollo; the dashing soldier Phoebus de Chateaupers; and the poet Pierre Gringoire—vie for the love of Esmeralda, a young Romani woman. As the story unfolds, readers come to realize that the focus of the story is not only on the human characters but on the grand cathedral itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a French Romantic/Gothic novel by Victor Hugo. The novel's original French title, Notre-Dame de Paris, is a double entendre: it refers to Notre Dame Cathedral, on which the story is centred, and Esmeralda, the novel's main character who is "our lady of Paris" and the centre of the human drama within the story. The story is set in Paris in 1482 during the reign of Louis XI. The gypsy Esmeralda (born as Agnes) captures the hearts of many men, including those of Captain Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire, but especially Quasimodo and his guardian Archdeacon Claude Frollo. Frollo is torn between his obsessive lust for Esmeralda and the rules of Notre Dame Cathedral. He orders Quasimodo to kidnap her, but Quasimodo is captured by Phoebus and his guards, who save Esmeralda.

Book excerpt: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (French: Notre-Dame de Paris, "Our Lady of Paris") is a novel by Victor Hugo published in 1831. The French title refers to the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, on which the story is focused, and it is also a metaphor for Esmeralda, who is the center of the human drama within the story. The story begins on Epiphany (6 January), 1482, the day of the Feast of Fools in Paris, France. Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback who is the bell-ringer of Notre Dame, is introduced by his crowning as the Pope of Fools. Esmeralda, a beautiful Gypsy with a kind and generous heart, captures the hearts of many men, including those of Captain Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire, a poor street poet, but especially those of Quasimodo and his adoptive father, Claude Frollo, the Archdeacon of Notre Dame...
