Download or read book The Georgia Catalog Historic American Buildings Survey written by John Linley and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the elegant townhouses of Savannah to the towering hotel and office complexes of Atlanta, the state of Georgia has a distinguished architectural tradition. No other work documents this rich heritage as comprehensively as The Georgia Catalog. Prepared under the auspices of the Historic American Buildings Survey, this carefully researched and beautifully illustrated volume will be an invaluable resource for architects, preservationists, historians, and those who own the historic houses or who simply are interested in Georgia’s architectural legacy. The book is in two parts. The first is a history of and guide to the architecture of the state. John Linley begins his survey with the remains of prehistoric civilization and the architecture of the first European settlers. He traces the development of a native architecture in the state, the flowering of the Greek Revival style, the functional architecture of commerce and industry, and the energy and imagination of urban architecture in the late twentieth century. The text reflects the author’s interest in the rationale and logic that produced the architecture and in the lessons that the past has for the present and the future. He also emphasizes the influence of climate, ecology, landscape, and city planning on both historic and contemporary architecture. The second section of The Georgia Catalog is a complete, updated listing of nearly four hundred sites in the Historic American Buildings Survey. Each entry gives the precise location of the site; a brief description of the structure; the date of construction and the name of the architect, if known; changes in name structure, or location of the building; its present condition; any facts of historical significance; and the number and dates of drawings, photographs, and data sheets in the HABS collection at the Library of Congress. To add to its value as a guide, the volume also includes a glossary of architectural terms and a list of Georgia properties that are included in the National Register of Historic Places, have been designated National Landmarks, or are part of the Historic American Engineering Record.

Download or read book Vernacular Buildings written by Allen Noble and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constancy permits the evolution of types and characteristics to be identified, even in widely spread locations. It helps trace the origins of structures, despite later modifications. And change allows one to trace the effects of difference in environment, fashion, cultural ideas and economic influences. Change and constancy operate together, although one may or other may dominate at a particular time and place. In Vernacular Buildings Allen Noble extends the global survey contained in his earlier highly successful Traditional Buildings, to cover vernacular buildings and dwellings around the world. In a truly comprehensive account, he ranges from the fazenda of the pioneer Brazilian settlers, the Masai dwellings of Tanzania and the gothic houses of Shanghai, to Virginia Hall and Parlor houses, the thatched dwellings of the Eifel region of Germany and the three -decker houses of New York. Acknowledging the value of archival research the author is also firmly convinced of the importance of field observation and the book is extensively illustrated with photographs from his own personal collection. With a comprehensive bibliography, and incorporating new material from cultural geographers, historians, folklorists and anthropologists, Vernacular Buildings is a unique survey that will be welcomed by specialists and enthusiasts alike.
Download or read book Joseph Henry Lumpkin written by Paul DeForest Hicks and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1799-1867) details the life and work of the man whose senior judgeship on Georgia's Supreme Court spanned more than twenty years and included service as its first Chief Justice. Paul Hicks portrays Lumpkin as both a civic-minded professional and an evangelical Presbyterian reformer. Exploring Lumpkin's important contributions to the institutional development of the Georgia Supreme Court, Hicks discusses Lumpkin's opinions in cases ranging in concern from family conflicts to slavery. He also shows how Lumpkin cleared a way through the thicket of antiquated laws that threatened to strangle the growth of corporate banking and business in Georgia. Treated in depth as well are the evolution of his views on slavery and secession and his involvement in social and economic reform, including temperance, education, African American colonization, and industrialization. Hicks also covers Lumpkin's undergraduate days at the University of Georgia and Princeton, his experiences as a state legislator and successful lawyer, and his family life. Among the family members portrayed are Lumpkin's older brother, Wilson, a two-term governor of Georgia; and Lumpkin's son-in-law, Thomas R. R. Cobb, cofounder with Lumpkin of the University of Georgia Law School. Joseph Henry Lumpkin played an important role in the public life of Georgia during the formative era of American law and the age of sectionalism. Here is a full and compelling portrait of Lumpkin as an individual of both intellect and passion, on and off the bench.
Download or read book Resisting Redemption at the Georgia Polls written by Richard Hogan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Civil War, as Black freedmen prepared to exercise their new voting rights in Georgia, white supremacist groups rose to restrict their ability. Georgians faced a new prospect for brokering a class-based electoral coalition of white yeomen and Black freedmen. The failure of Reconstruction echoes today as Georgia remains a voting rights battleground. This book details this struggle for racial justice and democracy in postwar Georgia, with an eye on issues that have persisted more than 150 years later.
Download or read book Plain Folk and Gentry in a Slave Society written by J. William Harris and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting study of the communities on both sides of the Savannah River in Georgia and South Carolina, J. William Harris explores two great ironies of American history—the South’s commitment to a liberty supported by slavery and its attempt to maintain the status quo with a war that undermined southern society. Relying on strong research in quantifiable data as well as manuscript records, Harris examines why white southerners—most of whom did not own slaves—united in a long, bloody war to preserve the institution. He argues that slaveowners relied on an ideology of liberty, a potential for social mobility, and a web of personal relationships between classes to contain white class divisions and ensure control over the black population. The strains of war, Harris shows, dissolved these bonds of community and made Confederate victory impossible, forever changing southern society.
