Download or read book The Hound of Heaven at My Heels written by Robert G. Waldron and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a poignant and inspiring story about the great poet Francis Thompson. Addicted to opium as a young man and reduced to homelessness on the streets of London, the poet, in a last effort to regenerate himself, sends to the editor of a Catholic monthly samples of his writing. Months pass before the editor reads the soiled manuscript; he immediately perceives its genius and sets out to find the young poet but to no avail. He publishes the poetry in the hopes that Thompson will contact him. The Hound of Heaven at My Heels is a fictional reconstruction of the poet's lost diary; it is a heart-breaking and soul-lifting account of his spiritual, psychological, and physical regeneration. It is the story of a young man who finally finds his soul and his vocation.

Book excerpt: 'The Hound of Heaven' has been called the greatest ode (poem) in the English language. Such was the contemporary verdict of some of the most respected critics of the time, and the conviction of its justness deepens with the passing of years. Recall the writers of great odes, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Gray, Collins, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Coleridge,—the best they have done will not outstare the "Hound of Heaven." Where shall we find its equal for exaltation of mood that knows no fatigue from the first word to the last? The motion of angelic hosts must be like the movement of this ode, combining in some marvellous and mysterious way the swiftness of lightning with the stately progress of a pageant white with the blinding white light of an awful Presence..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Hound of Heaven and Other Poems" is a collection of poems by famed English poet Francis Thompson. Generally regarded as the most important modern Catholic poet, Thompson achieved critical and commercial success with his volumes of poetry and prose during his relatively short and troubled life. Born in Lancashire, England in 1859, Thompson studied medicine at the behest of his father for several years before quitting to pursue a literary career. Destitute, living on the streets, and addicted to opium, he was rescued by a married couple who were publishers and recognized his talent and the literary value of his work. Thompson went on to publish three volumes of poetry along with several essays and works of prose before his death in 1907. "The Hound of Heaven" is his most famous and enduring poem and its powerful imagery has inspired countless other artists and writers, including J. R. R. Tolkien, who counted Thompson amongst the most important influences on his writing. Included in this volume is a comprehensive selection of his poetry. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book Metanoia A Catholic Book Series Book Number Three Vocation Common Priest by Baptism

Download or read book Metanoia A Catholic Book Series Book Number Three Vocation Common Priest by Baptism written by Cecil Donald Leighton, Jr. and published by Cecil Donald Leighton, Jr.. This book was released on 2023-09-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metanoia: A Catholic Book Series, Book Number Three: Vocation: Common Priest by Baptism is the author’s third publication in a series of Catholic books. In Vocation: Common Priest by Baptism, the author sets forth his personal experience in discerning whether Jesus Christ is calling him to share or participate in The Eternal Priesthood of Christ, as a common priest by Baptism or as a ministerial priest by Holy Orders. In answering this question, the author recounts 25 years of priestly misidentifications and associations made by strangers, parishioners, family, friends, and neighbors, connecting them with the irrevocable and inseparable gifts and call of a true Catholic priest (i.e., Sacerdos alter Christus). He is publishing this book in hopes that other Catholic men formally in discernment may find it instructive. Finally, this book is part of the author’s lay apostolate of Roman Catholic witness to the reality, power, and transforming/saving love of God, as well as the author’s response to and promotion of the Church’s “universal call to holiness” (Lumen Gentium) and the “new evangelization” (Novo Millenio Ineunte), in the electronically and globally connected virtual world of the Internet.

NOTES Hound of Heaven.--With felicitous grace and reverential delicacy Thompson gives Our Lord an unwonted and daring title and throughout the poem never once explicitly refers to the metaphor. A lesser writer would inevitably have rendered the comparison very repellent. The fuller development is left to our own devotional, inward thoughts. Thompson, of course, had Scriptural warrant for using such type of comparisons from the animal world. No phrase of Holy Writ is more current than "the Lamb of God" (St. John i, 20, 36; Apoc. v, 12, vi, 16, vii, 14). Each Holy Week we hear Isaias' plaint (Isaias liii, 7): "He shall be led as a sheep to the slaughter and shall be dumb as a lamb before his shearer," which thought is repeated in Acts viii, 32. Opening the Apocalypse once more we find another metaphor (Apocalypse v, 5): "And one of the Ancients said to me: "Weep not; behold the lion of the tribe of Juda, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book." Lastly we find another metaphor in St. Paul (Hebrews xiii, 11-12), where with true and sound literary instinct he applies the symbolism of the offering but not the name to Our Lord, thus reversing the present process of Thompson: "For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the holies by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people by His own blood, suffered without the gate." Lines 1-/5 With the bold inclusive sweep of genius, Thompson in these first verses outlines the whole scope of the poem and suggests unmistakably its outcome. The merely material picture of these lines is noteworthy: a branching path, a portico, a maze, a mist, a sparkling stream, a forest glade and lastly a vast canyon. Line 1. With...

Book And Then I Am Gone

Download or read book And Then I Am Gone written by Mathias B. Freese and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And Then I Am Gone: A Walk with Thoreau tells the story of a New York City man who becomes an Alabama man. Despite his radical migration to simpler living and a late-life marriage to a saint of sorts, his persistent pet anxieties and unanswerable questions follow him. Mathias Freese wants his retreat from the societal "it" to be a brave safari for the self rather than cowardly avoidance, so who better to guide him but Henry David Thoreau, the self-aware philosopher who retreated to Walden Pond "to live deliberately" and cease "the hurry and waste of life"? In this memoir, Freese wishes to share how and why he came to Harvest, Alabama (both literally and figuratively), to impart his existential impressions and concerns, and to leave his mark before he is gone.
