Book Stop Female Genital Mutilation

Download or read book Stop Female Genital Mutilation written by Fran P. Hosken and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is based on the comprehensive research in Africa published in THE HOSKEN REPORT, GENITAL & SEXUAL MUTILATION OF FEMALES, which is summarized in the chapter "HEALTH FACTS & OVERVIEW" (annotated). In the key chapter "WOMEN SPEAK ABOUT THEIR LIVES" the terrible personal experiences of mutilated women are related by them to enable others to escape their fate. These stories were collected by the author over many years all over Africa, visiting maternity hospitals, midwives & women's groups to establish the facts. The truth about these damaging traditions has been concealed by all international organizations - see chapter on "THE POLITICS OF FGM." A chapter on "HUMAN RIGHTS" unequivocally establishes that FGM is an international human rights violation. "ACTIONS FOR CHANGE" documents the initiatives by African women to eradicate these violent assaults on the integrity of female children - especially the work of the Inter African Committee on Traditional Practices affecting the Health of Women & Children all over Africa. The author describes the experience with THE CHILDBIRTH PICTURE BOOKS: they explain healthy reproduction regardless of language or literacy & are successfully used in stopping FGM." Download or read book Female Circumcision written by Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bolokoli, khifad, tahara, tahoor, qudiin, irua, bondo, kuruna, negekorsigin, and kene-kene are a few of the terms used in local African languages to denote a set of cultural practices collectively known as female circumcision. Practiced in many countries across Africa and Asia, this ritual is hotly debated. Supporters regard it as a central coming-of-age ritual that ensures chastity and promotes fertility. Human rights groups denounce the procedure as barbaric. It is estimated that between 100 million and 130 million girls and women today have undergone forms of this genital surgery. Female Circumcision gathers together African activists to examine the issue within its various cultural and historical contexts, the debates on circumcision regarding African refugee and immigrant populations in the United States, and the human rights efforts to eradicate the practice. This work brings African women's voices into the discussion, foregrounds indigenous processes of social and cultural change, and demonstrates the manifold linkages between respect for women's bodily integrity, the empowerment of women, and democratic modes of economic development. This volume does not focus narrowly on female circumcision as a set of ritualized surgeries sanctioned by society. Instead, the contributors explore a chain of connecting issues and processes through which the practice is being transformed in local and transnational contexts. The authors document shifts in local views to highlight processes of change and chronicle the efforts of diverse communities as agents in the process of cultural and social transformation.

Book Genital Cutting and Transnational Sisterhood

Download or read book Genital Cutting and Transnational Sisterhood written by Stanlie Myrise James and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture : "[This book] is a much-needed response to the ethnocentric and arrogant Western perceptions surrounding female genital cutting (FGC), often referred to as either female genital mutilation or female circumcision but including a variety of practices of varying history, severity, geographical distribution, and consequences. In five provocative essays, the contributors to this timely volume challenge representations of FCG. In doing so, they interweave a range of perspectives, including history, human rights, law ... Balancing feminist ideals with culturally conscious approaches, they dispel sensationalized and widely accepted concepts about FCG that influence Western media, law, and feminism thought."

Book Music Technology and the Project Studio

Download or read book Music Technology and the Project Studio written by Dan Hosken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music Technology and the Project Studio: Synthesis and Sampling provides clear explanations of synthesis and sampling techniques and how to use them effectively and creatively. Starting with analog-style synthesis as a basic model, this textbook explores in detail how messages from a MIDI controller or sequencer are used to control elements of a synthesizer to create rich, dynamic sound. Since samplers and sample players are also common in today’s software, the book explores the details of sampling and the control of sampled instruments with MIDI messages. This book is not limited to any specific software and is general enough to apply to many different software instruments. Overviews of sound and digital audio provide students with a set of common concepts used throughout the text, and "Technically Speaking" sidebars offer detailed explanations of advanced technical concepts, preparing students for future studies in sound synthesis. Music Technology and the Project Studio: Synthesis and Sampling is an ideal follow-up to the author’s An Introduction to Music Technology, although each book can be used independently. The Companion Website includes: Audio examples demonstrating synthesis and sampling techniques Interactive software that allows the reader to experiment with various synthesis techniques Guides relating the material in the book to various software synthesizers and samplers Links to relevant resources, examples, and software

Book Nothing Like a Dame

Download or read book Nothing Like a Dame written by Andrew Hosken and published by Granta Books (UK). This book was released on 2006 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Homes for Votes, three cemeteries sold for five pence apiece, the missing Tesco millions and a gold toilet seat, plus a camel processing through London and pay-as-you-go toilets - the hallmarks of Shirley Porter's regime in Westminster were as farcical as her policies were corrupt." "Two decades ago, Dame Shirley Porter was Britain's second most famous female politician after Margaret Thatcher. Today she has been almost erased from Conservative party history. The Tesco heiress, having shot to power and notoriety as Leader of Westminster City Council in the 1980s, embarked on a wide-spread policy of gerrymandering to secure Tory votes in the coming elections. The fall-out from her reign united opposition from all corners of public life, from Ken Livingstone to Margaret Thatcher, Nigella Lawson to the Queen of Holland, refuse workers to the Billy Furry fan club." "In an account of one of the strangest episodes in British political history, Today programme investigative journalist Andrew Hosken tells of Shirley Porter's upbringing as the daughter of Jack Cohen, the founder of Tesco; her rise to power in Westminster; the extraordinary details of the scandal and the search for her hidden millions. Nothing Like A Dame, meticulously researched and including interviews with most of the individuals involved, is colourful, shocking and often stranger than fiction."--BOOK JACKET.

Now BBC reporter Andrew Hosken delivers the inside story on Islamic State. Through extensive first-hand reporting, Hosken builds a comprehensive picture of IS, their brutal ideology and exterminationist methods. Equally compelling and horrifying, Empire of Fear reveals how Islamic State came to be, explores how they might be defeated and asks a frightening question – if they were brought down, could we stop another group emerging to replace them?
