Book Medical Insects and Arachnids

Download or read book Medical Insects and Arachnids written by R.P. Lane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprising though it seems, the world faces almost as great a threat today from arthropod-borne diseases as it did in the heady days of the 1950s when global eradication of such diseases by eliminating their vectors with synthetic insecticides, particularly DDT, seemed a real possibility. Malaria, for example, still causes tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world, especially in Africa. Knowledge of the biology of insect and arachnid disease vectors is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Biological research directed at the development of better methods of control becomes even more important in the light of the partial failure of many control schemes that are based on insecticide- although not all is gloom, since basic biological studies have contributed enormously to the outstanding success of international control programmes such as the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. It is a sine qua non for proper understanding of the epidemiology and successful vector control of any human disease transmitted by an arthropod that all concerned with the problem - medical entomologist, parasitologist, field technician - have a good basic understanding of the arthropod's biology. Knowledge will be needed not only of its direct relationship to any parasite or pathogen that it transmits but also of its structure, its life history and its behaviour - in short, its natural history. Above all, it will be necessary to be sure that it is correctly identified.

Book The Tabanidae Diptera of Oregon

Download or read book The Tabanidae Diptera of Oregon written by Ali Ahmed Mahmoud and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty species and subspecies and six varieties in eight genera of the family Tabanidae are recognized from Oregon. The following genera are represented in Oregon: Apatolestes Williston, Pilimas Brennan, Stonemyia Brennan, Silvius Meigen, Chrysops Meigen, Atylotus Osten Sacken, Hybomitra Enderlein and Tabanus Linnaeus. Adults and larvae were collected from various parts of Oregon. A Malaise trap baited with carbon dioxide gas was used for the collection of adults. Materials in the collections of Oregon State University and other institutions in and outside Oregon were examined. General information on the biology and morphology of the various life stages are presented. Zoogeographical information, as given here, includes distribution and analysis of the Oregon fauna. Over 3,000 specimens were examined. A description of each species is given together with label data of examined specimens, a discussion of the taxonomy, distribution and immature stages. Difficulties were encountered with some species of Hybomitra, including H. sonomensis (Osten Sacken) and H. fulvilateralis (Macquart). The status of these species is not clear since some of the characters used in the separation of tabanid species are subject to considerable variation. This problem is discussed in the conclusion of this study and under each appropriate species. Tabanus fratellus Williston is removed from the subgenus Glaucops Zsilady and placed in the subgenus Tabanus Linnaeus, since some specimens have four annulated antennae. Hybomitra hirtula (Bigot) is treated as a full species on the basis of consistently denuded subcallus that separates it from H. tetrica (Marten). H. phaenops Osten Sacken is also treated as full species rather than as variety of H. sonomensis Osten Sacken because they differ in a number of characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parasiticide Discovery: In Vitro and In Vivo Tests with Relevant Parasite Rearing and Host Infection/Infestation Methods, Volume One presents valuable screening methods that have led to the discovery of the majority of parasiticides commercialized in the animal health industry. As much of the knowledge of parasiticide discovery methods is being lost in the animal health industry as seasoned parasitologists retire, this book serves to preserve valuable methods that have led to the discovery of the majority of parasiticides commercialized in animal health, also giving insights into the in vitro and in vivo methods used to identify the parasiticide activity of compounds. - Addresses current issues of resistance, along with combination uses for resistant parasites - Presents useful, authoritative information (chemical, pharmaceutical, clinical, etc.) for the pyrantel family of compounds - Includes a discussion on screening methods in combination therapies - Provides cutting-edge material for an evolving area of scientific discussion - Includes in vitro and in vivo screens and parasite maintenance and culture methods
