Ln the Two Dianas poor Francois is shown to us in a somewhat more favorable light than in the Horoscope. Weak, spiritless creature that he was, the fervent, devoted love which he is commonly supposed to have felt for his queen, the ill-fated Mary Stuart, has seemed to be the only ray of sunshine and romance in his brief and gloomy reign. The Baron de la Renaudie will be remembered as a prominent actor in that part of the Two Dianas which deals with the earlier religious troubles aid the conspiracy of Amboise. The main character in this novel is Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy. The seventh novel is The Horoscope: a romance of the reign of François II (1858), who reigned for only one year (1559-1560)

But if we were to let go of this fond conviction, Bruno Latour asks, what would the world look like? His book, an anthropology of science, shows us how much of modernity is actually a matter of faith. What does it mean to be modern? What difference does the scientific method make? The difference, Latour explains, is in our careful distinctions between nature and society, between human and thing, distinctions that our benighted ancestors, in their world of alchemy, astrology, and phrenology, never made. But alongside this purifying practice that defines modernity, there exists another seemingly contrary one: the construction of systems that mix politics, science, technology, and nature. The ozone debate is such a hybrid, in Latour’s analysis, as are global warming, deforestation, even the idea of black holes. Book excerpt: Jesuits established a large number of astronomical, geophysical and meteorological observatories during the 17th and 18th centuries and again during the 19th and 20th centuries throughout the world. The history of these observatories has never been published in a complete form. Many early European astronomical observatories were established in Jesuit colleges. During the 17th and 18th centuries Jesuits were the first western scientists to enter into contact with China and India. It was through them that western astronomy was first introduced in these countries. They made early astronomical observations in India and China and they directed for 150 years the Imperial Observatory of Beijing. In the 19th and 20th centuries a new set of observatories were established. Besides astronomy these now included meteorology and geophysics. Jesuits established some of the earliest observatories in Africa, South America and the Far East. Jesuit observatories constitute an often forgotten chapter of the history of these sciences.
