Book excerpt: One woman has the answer to history’s strangest maritime mystery in this novel from “one of the great masters of English detective fiction” (Francis M. Nevins). Though history would remember her as the Marie Celeste, the ship’s name was Mary Celeste. She was a brig—square-rigged, a hundred feet long, large enough for a crew of nine, and sturdy enough to cross the Atlantic and bring profits home to its masters—a beautiful ship that was destined for tragedy. On December 4, 1872, the Mary Celeste is found adrift off the coast of Portugal with cargo in her hold, food upon her tables, and half-written letters on her captain’s desk. But not a soul can be found on board. This mystery has puzzled maritime scholars for over a century. One woman knows the answers, because she was there from the beginning, and knows the seductive “Honey Mary” the ship was secretly named after. As she retraces the events that lead up to that fateful voyage, she finds that the mind can be as dark and cold as an ocean grave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harlot or Holy Woman? presents an exhaustive study of qedešah, a Hebrew word meaning “consecrated woman” but rendered “prostitute” or “sacred prostitute” in Bible translations. Reexamining biblical and extrabiblical texts, Phyllis A. Bird questions how qedešah came to be associated with prostitution and offers an alternative explanation of the term, one that suggests a wider participation for women as religious specialists in Israel’s early cultic practice. Bird’s study reviews all the texts from classical antiquity cited as sources for an institution of “sacred prostitution,” alongside a comprehensive analysis of the cuneiform texts from Mesopotamia containing the cognate qadištu and Ugaritic texts containing the masculine cognate qdš. Through these texts, Bird presents a portrait of women dedicated to a deity, engaged in a variety of activities from cultic ritual to wet-nursing, and sharing a common generic name with the qedešah of ancient Israel. In the final chapter she returns to biblical texts, reexamining them in light of the new evidence from the ancient Near East. Considering alternative models for constructing women’s religious roles in ancient Israel, this wholly original study offers new interpretations of key texts and raises questions about the nature of Israelite religion as practiced outside the royal cult and central sanctuary.

Book Who Was the Mother of Harlots Unlocking the Key to Revelation

Download or read book Who Was the Mother of Harlots Unlocking the Key to Revelation written by MR Steve Temple and published by Jadon Productions. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Babylon in Revelation, is a key to proper understanding of "the end times." She is described as "the mother of harlots." Most commentators ignore the OT marriage covenant language of the term "harlot." It is assumed that a "harlot" was simply an immoral woman. Not so! As Temple effectively shows, in scripture, a harlot was a wife who had become unfaithful. This has tremendous implications for the dating and understanding of Revelation. Temple does a marvelous job of documenting the temporal setting, the language of marriage covenant and thus, the proper identity of the harlot city Babylon. This is a tremendously important book that you definitely want in your library!

Book excerpt: There is no woman with a worse reputation than Jezebel, the ancient queen who corrupted a nation and met one of the most gruesome fates in the Bible. Her name alone speaks of sexual decadence and promiscuity. But what if this version of her story, handed down to us through the ages, is merely the one her enemies wanted us to believe? What if Jezebel, far from being a conniving harlot, was, in fact, framed? In this remarkable new biography, Lesley Hazleton shows exactly how the proud and courageous queen of Israel was vilified and made into the very embodiment of wanton wickedness by her political and religious enemies. Jezebel brings readers back to the source of the biblical story, a rich and dramatic saga featuring evil schemes and underhanded plots, war and treason, false gods and falser humans, and all with the fate of entire nations at stake. At its center are just one woman and one man—the sophisticated Queen Jezebel and the stark prophet Elijah. Their epic and ultimately tragic confrontation pits tolerance against righteousness, pragmatism against divine dictates, and liberalism against conservatism. It is, in other words, the original story of the unholy marriage of sex, politics, and religion, and it ends in one of the most chillingly brutal scenes in the entire Bible. Here at last is the real story of the rise and fall of this legendary woman—a radically different portrait with startling contemporary resonance in a world mired once again in religious wars.

Book excerpt: Dundee, Scotland: 1715. Her survival depends on a bargain struck with a handsome stranger… Accused of witchcraft like her mother before her, Jessie Taskill finds herself behind prison walls, awaiting certain death. All she craves is to be free of witch hunters and united with her siblings at home in the Scottish highlands—where mystical ways are not punished, but accepted. Salvation comes in the form of a roguish priest, unlike any man of the cloth she has known. But Gregor Ramsay is as far from holy as the devil himself. Gregor does not believe in magic, but has a canny plan to use the pretty harlot as bait to lure his enemy. His promise of freedom in return for her services could represent Jessie’s passage home to the highlands. Then undeniable passion flares between them and emotion conflicts with their individual goals. Jessie begins to resent Gregor’s plan to have her seduce and ruin his enemy—especially when Gregor himself is so masterful and compelling. When the time comes for Gregor to send Jessie into his enemies lair, Jessie thrives—nourished by their physical passions—and everything Gregor thought he knew is rent asunder. A bawdy historical, erotic romance novel. Please note: previously published with a different cover. This is an adult title and features earthy language and scenarios appropriate to the historical setting.
