Download or read book The Homeric Palace Classic Reprint written by Norman Morrison Isham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homeric Palace We find, therefore, that during the Mycenaean period, the life of which no one seriously doubts that the Homeric poems reflect, though they are at a greater or less distance from it, each Chieftain or each king has his own particular stronghold. He seats himself on some prominent crag and gathers around him his immediate family and dependents. In the valley below, and on the slopes of the hill, dwell the different clans of the great sept which the king rules. Each clan cultivates the land which is held in common. In a sudden attack they take refuge within their lord's citadel, or hill fortress. In time they grow too numerous for the ramparts to contain, and then they wall in a space at the foot of the hill and make this their defence. Book A Story of the Golden Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Story of the Golden Age Classic Reprint written by James Baldwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Story of the Golden Age To repeat, for your enjoyment, some of the most beauti ful of the old Greek myths. If I have, now and then, given them a coloring slightly different from the ori gimal, you will remember that such is the right of the story-teller, the poet, and the artist. The essential features of the stories remain unchanged. I have, all along, drawn freely from the old tragedians, and now and then from Homer himself; nor have I thought it necessary in every instance to mention authorities, or to apologize for an occasional close imitation of some of the best translations. The pictures of old Greek life have, in the main, been derived from the Iliad and the Odyssey, and will, I hope, help you to a better understanding of those poems when you come to make acquaintance directly with them. Should you become interested in the Story of the Golden Age, as it is here related, do not be disap pointed by its somewhat abrupt ending; for you will find it continued by the master-poet of all ages, in a manner both inimitable and unapproachable. If you are pleased with the discourse of the porter at the gate, how much greater shall be your delight when you stand in the palace of the king, and hearken to. Book The Story of the Odyssey Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Odyssey Classic Reprint written by Alfred J. Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Odyssey When the great city of Troy had been taken, all the Chiefs who had fought against it set sail for their homes. But there was wrath in heaven against them, so that they did not find a safe and happy return. For one was shipwrecked, and another was shamefully slain by his false wife in his palace, and others found all things at home troubled and Changed, and were driven to seek new dwellings else where; and some were driven far and wide about the world before they saw their native land again. Of all, the wise Ulysses was he that wandered farthest and suffered most, for when ten years had well-nigh passed, he was still far away from Ithaca, his kingdom. The gods were gathered in council in the hall of Olympus, all but Poseidon, for he had gone to feast with the Ethiopians. Now Poseidon was he who most hated Ulysses, and kept him from his home. Book excerpt: Since their composition almost 3,000 years ago the Homeric epics have lost none of their power to grip audiences and fire the imagination: with their stories of life and death, love and loss, war and peace they continue to speak to us at the deepest level about who we are across the span of generations. That being said, the world of Homer is in many ways distant from that in which we live today, with fundamental differences not only in language, social order, and religion, but in basic assumptions about the world and human nature. This volume offers a detailed yet accessible introduction to ancient Greek culture through the lens of Book One of the Odyssey, covering all of these aspects and more in a comprehensive Introduction designed to orient students in their studies of Greek literature and history. The full Greek text is included alongside a facing English translation which aims to reproduce as far as feasible the word order and sound play of the Greek original and is supplemented by a Glossary of Technical Terms and a full vocabulary keyed to the specific ways that words are used in Odyssey I. At the heart of the volume is a full-length line-by-line commentary, the first in English since the 1980s and updated to bring the latest scholarship to bear on the text: focusing on philological and linguistic issues, its close engagement with the original Greek yields insights that will be of use to scholars and advanced students as well as to those coming to the text for the first time.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Circe: A Dramatic Fantasy N o mention is made of Penelope, the wife of Ulysses, at any point in the story of Circe but we read that Ulysses lingered in the enchanted island, until his men were finally compelled, seizing an opportunity when Circe was away, to remonstrate with their chief and rouse him to thoughts of a return to his home. Homer says that the attendants of the Enchantress in her palace were nymphs, such as derive their being from the fountains, the groves, and the rivers flowing to the sea. The First Act of the play brings Ulysses and his companions into Circe's palace; the Second Act takes them out of it. Book Odyssey Vol 1

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Odyssey, Vol. 1: With Introduction, Notes, and Table of Homeric Forms Calypso, the Island Queen, is warned by heaven to release her prisoner, and sends him away in a boat of his own fashioning. But the wrath of Poseidon follows him on the sea, and wrecks his frail craft on the shore of Scheria, the happy land of the Phaeacians. But he is rescued by the fair princess Nausicaa, who brings him to the palace of her father, King Alcinous, where he is royally entertained. At the bidding of the King he tells the strange story of his wanderings from the time he left Troy till he was thrown upon the coast of Ogygia, where Calypso lived. He had landed in the country of the Ciconians, and left there many of his comrades dead: he had seen the homes of the Lotus-eaters, and could scarcely tear his men away from the dreamy charm of the land. He had faced the cannibal Cyclops in his mountain-den, and revenged himself on the monster by blinding his solitary eye, after escaping from his clutches by a grotesque stratagem. Next we hear of him at the floating isle of Aeolus, and see him blown back from the very shores of his own country through the treachery of his sailors, who Opened the Bag of Winds that Aeolus had given him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homer's Iliad: Books XIX-XXIV This edition of Books xix.-xxiv. of the Iliad follows the same general plan as the other volumes of the series to which it belongs. According to this plan the readings of the Dindorf-Hentze edition, Leipzig, 1884, have been adopted throughout, with a few unimportant changes in punctuation. The commentary is based upon that of the Ameis-Hentze (third) edition, Leipzig, 1896. Little has been omitted except the occasional critical notes, which have been transferred to the Appendix. It seems undesirable to confuse the learner with conflicting views, and the earnest student will soon discover that many interesting questions are treated in the Appendix alone. The commentary has been much enlarged by additions from various sources, especially from the editions of Faesi-Franke, La Roche, and Leaf, and from the editor's own collections. The parallel passages from Homer have been quoted in full, and many illustrative citations have been added, chiefly from Vergil, but also from other writers, including a considerable number from the Old Testament. To the Critical Notes on each book is prefixed a brief Critical Introduction, containing a summary of some of the more important phases of the higher criticism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer: The First Three Books, Faithfully Translated Into English Hexameters, According to the Style and Manner of the Original It appears that the Iliad, in analogy to the National Institutions of the Homeric period, was intended not for mere private study, but for popular and competitive recitation. It was recited, according to the usage of those times, before a public assembly, amid the plaudits of an audience alike captivated with its harmony and heroism, with its energy and majesty, and with its primitive minuteness and simplicity. It was repeated afterwards by the Rhapsodists in popular ballads, and again and again recited before competing majorities, until at length all the tribes of Greece (in the words of our great commentator of Homeric celebrity) were intellectually initiated in its culture, historical, philosophical, and political. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 2: With English Notes It is generally held that the Tragics preferred to take their themes from certain later, inferior, and merely supplementary poems, rather than from the Iliad and the Odyssey, either be cause they found the incidents of the former more fit for their purpose, or because they hesitated to trench on ground which they regarded as almost consecrated by the unique genius of the Divine Homer.
