Book The Holy Standards

  • Pages : 570 pages

Download or read book The Holy Standards written by Peter Mogila and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing: The Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, The Athanasian Creed, The Confession of Chalcedon, The Confession of Dositheus, The Shorter and Longer Catechisms of St. Philaret of Moscow, The Catechism of St. Peter Mogila, and The Synodikon of Orthodoxy. The present collection of official and formally approved statements of faith of the Eastern Orthodox Church is, as far as the present compiler is aware, the first time such an endeavor has been attempted in the English language. The reason for such a collection is quite simple: The instruction of the faithful and their edification unto all godliness. Although in these confused days there is an abundance of opinions, there are, sadly, a paucity of clear, thorough, authoritative, and readily available summaries of the Orthodox Faith that have both stood the test of time and also received the official approbation of the Church. The current climate, therefore, needs such a collection, for too many seek to present the faith in the light of their own wisdom. But, as we pray in the prayers after the Divine Liturgy to be delivered from the slavery of our own reasoning, it is the editor's prayer that this collection of sacred Creeds, Confessions, and Catechisms will raise up a generation of faithful Orthodox Christians who, through meditating again and again on the holy truths contained herein, will be both well rounded and deeply grounded in the Faith that was once for all delivered to the saints, and able to withstand in the evil day the ever blowing winds of diverse and strange doctrines and destructive heresies.

Book The Bible and the Holy Fathers for Orthodox

Download or read book The Bible and the Holy Fathers for Orthodox written by Johanna Manley and published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 1144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cycle of daily Gospel and Epistle readings based on the movable calendar, which starts with Easter (Pascha), includes the fifty days after the Resurrection, Pentecost and the 37 weeks that followed, the Week of the Publican and the Pharisee, followed by the Triodion, which begins 10 weeks before Easter, and includes the Preparation for Lent, Graet Lent and Holy Week. This work is particularly addressed to those who set aside an hour daily for prayer and meditation. Appendices are added for Sunday matins, major fixed feasts such as Nativity, Theophany and other Feast days of Martyrsm saints. But since this volume is not arranged according to the fixed calendar which lists all the saints and fixed feasts for each day of the month, a suitable companion would be a Menaion, which provides a fuller treatment of the major feast days, and the flow of church seasons.

Book excerpt: Presents the Orthodox perspective on who the Holy Spirit is, where the mystery of God comes alive. Delving deep and subtly into Orthodox tradition and theology, The Giver of Life articulates the identity of the Holy Spirit as the third Person of the Trinity as well as the role of the Holy Spirit in the salvation of the world. Written with a poetic sensibility, Fr. Oliver begins with Pentecost, an event uniquely celebrated in Orthodoxy as a time when greenery of all kinds is brought into churches. "The splash of green foliage calls to mind not just life, but a special kind of life. It is the life that transcends biological existence and flows from the very Godhead Itself; it is life that's a state of being—immortal, everlasting, changeless. Ferns and flowers fade and die, but souls filled with this ‘life from above' flourish forever." Reflecting on the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Church, to the world, and to the human person, Giver of Life looks to the impressive biblical and liturgical tradition of Orthodox Christianity. This is a book weighty in content but accessible in tone, not an academic study of the mind, but a lived experience of the heart.
