Book The Holy Orthodox Bible Vol I The Pentateuch

Download or read book The Holy Orthodox Bible Vol I The Pentateuch written by and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-01-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many may ask, "What is the Septuagint?" The Septuagint is the Greek Old Testament of the Christian Church. It was the version of the Old Testament translated from the Hebrew into Greek and was used by the Greek-speaking Jews of Alexandria before the coming of Christ. The Septuagint, more than the Hebrew Old Testament, clearly shows that the prophesies of the future Messiah refer to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to no other. Also, the writers of the New Testament almost exclusively quoted from the Septuagint when they quoted the Old Testament within the pages of the New Testament. This is the Septuagint, and it is now available for the first time in over 150 years in English and based on Septuagint texts that are authorized by The Holy Orthodox Church.

Book excerpt: For any dialogue between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches to be fruitful, we must first understand our differences. Popes and Patriarchs covers some of the distinctives in theology and worldview that separate the churches of the East from those of the West, focusing primarily on the claims of papal supremacy. Author Michael Whelton, a convert from Catholicism to Orthodoxy, discusses some of the theological and historical issues that led him to explore the teachings of the Orthodox Church, including the doctrine of original sin, the influence of Medieval scholastic thought on the Western Church, and the modern trend toward evolutionary Christianity. Part II examines in depth the true attitude of the early Eastern saints of the Church toward the papacy, an attitude radically different from that frequently attributed to them by Roman Catholic apologists.A final chapter is devoted to typical questions Roman Catholics raise about the Orthodox Church, including a comprehensive discussion of divorce and remarriage.

Book THE HOLY BIBLE Updated American Standard Version UASV

Download or read book THE HOLY BIBLE Updated American Standard Version UASV written by Christian Publishing House and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 1448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Updated American Standard Version (UASV) is a literal translation. Translating from the original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek is a task unlike any other and should never be taken lightly. It carries with it the heaviest responsibility: the translator renders God’s thoughts into a modern language. What does that mean? It means that our primary purpose is to give the Bible readers what God said by way of his human authors, not what a translator thinks God meant in its place. In other words, our primary goal is to be accurate and faithful to the original text. The meaning of a word is the responsibility of the interpreter (i.e., reader), not the translator. The translator remains faithful to this literal translation philosophy unless it has been determined that the rendering will be misunderstood or misinterpreted. The translator is not tasked with making the text easy to read, but rather to make it as accurately faithful to the original as possible. UASV PURPOSE Our primary purpose is to give the Bible readers what God said by way of his human authors, not what a translator thinks God meant in its place.—Truth Matters! UASV GOAL Our primary goal is to be accurate and faithful to the original text. The meaning of a word is the responsibility of the interpreter (i.e., reader), not the translator.—Translating Truth! OUR RESOURCES The Updated American Standard Version will be one of the most faithful and accurate translations to date by Christian Publishing House. It will remain faithful to the original and what the authors penned. We will not go beyond the translator’s responsibility into the field of the interpreter. Removing the Outdated Passages with the Old English “thee’s” and “thou’s” etc. have been replaced with modern English. Many words and phrases that were extremely ambiguous or easily misunderstood since the 1901 ASV have been updated according to the best lexicons. Verses with difficult word order or vocabulary have been translated into correct English grammar and syntax, for easier reading. However, if the word order of the original conveyed meaning, it was kept. More Accurate The last 110+ years have seen the discovering of far more manuscripts, especially the papyri, with many manuscripts dating within 100 years of the originals. While making more accurate translation choices, we have stayed true to the literal translation philosophy of the ASV, while other literal translations abandon the philosophy far too often. The translator seeks to render the Scriptures accurately, without losing what the Bible author penned by changing what the author wrote, by distorting or embellishing through imposing what the translator believes the author meant into the original text. Accuracy in Bible translation is being faithful to what the original author wrote (the words that he used), as opposed to going beyond into the meaning, trying to determine what the author meant by his words. The latter is the reader’s job. The translator uses the most reliable, accurate critical texts (e.g., WH, NA, UBS, BHS, as well as the original language texts, versions, and other sources that will help him to determine the original reading. Why the Need for Updated Translations? New manuscript discoveries Changes in the language A better understanding of the original languages Improved insight into Bible translation

Understanding how we got our Bible and how reliable is its text becomes a vital topic when we believe it is the Word of God.The Bible is inspired and God has preserved its text down through the centuries. Faith believes it and evidence proves it. This book proves the case for the superiority of the so called Majority Text of the original Greek New Testament, called also Traditional or Byzantine. It is the author's conviction that the Majority of the manuscripts of the original apostolic texts must be viewed as the result of the faithful copying tradition started with the autographs down to our days.

Book excerpt: The majority of the New Testament manuscripts bear witness to virtually the same text. Is this not evidence of its providential preservation? The sad truth is that the revisions intending to improve the Textus Receptus and the biblical traslations did the opposite, weakened the testimony to the authentic text of the Bible.

Book Russian Bible Wars

Download or read book Russian Bible Wars written by Stephen K. Batalden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although biblical texts were known in Church Slavonic as early as the ninth century, translation of the Bible into Russian came about only in the nineteenth century. Modern scriptural translation generated major religious and cultural conflict within the Russian Orthodox church. The resulting divisions left church authority particularly vulnerable to political pressures exerted upon it in the twentieth century. Russian Bible Wars illuminates the fundamental issues of authority that have divided modern Russian religious culture. Set within the theoretical debate over secularization, the volume clarifies why the Russian Bible was issued relatively late and amidst great controversy. Stephen Batalden's study traces the development of biblical translation into Russian and of the 'Bible wars' that then occurred in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Russia. The annotated bibliography of the Russian Bible identifies the different editions and their publication history.
