Book Syria the Holy Land Asia Minor C

Download or read book Syria the Holy Land Asia Minor C written by John Carne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, &C: Illustrated, in a Series of Views Drawn From Nature Mad people continue even at the present time to be sent from the surrounding country, to be cured at St. Antonio: it is much more likely to drive sane people mad than to cure lunatics. The descent into this gloomy vale, as you pass hence, is so sad, the cliffs on each side so grim, that you think you are taking leave of the gay and blessed things of nature, of the sweet grove, of the sun-lit shore, of the shepherd and his pastures, of the beautiful sea and its wild waves. The convent is so overhung by the heights, as to- receive slenderly the beams of the sun: in the plate, which is taken at noon, a flood of light is thrown too lavishly on the roof and walls: noon is the only hour in which this could happen: during the greater part of the day they are cold and sunless. Each point, each nook or ledge of rock around, is covered with crosses which do not appear in the plate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Syria the Holy Land Asia Minor Etc Classic Reprint

Download or read book Syria the Holy Land Asia Minor Etc Classic Reprint written by John Carne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, Etc Most of the places illustrated in this Work had been visited by the writer, previous to the Egyptian invasion, when the land was in a state of comparative quiet, very favourable to a successful progress. To the Oriental traveller, the pleasures of memory are greater than those of hope: on his devious way, clouds and darkness often gather: the feuds of the chiefs may suddenly forbid all approach to the favourite ruin or city, imprison him in some hamlet or desert, where he is alone with his baffled hope and despair. Perhaps disease or contagion overtake him, where there is none to help. But when his warfare is over, and his objects attained, when his own hearth and roof-tree receive him - then memory wakes, to sleep no more. In the murmur of his native wave he fancies he hears the distant rush of the Nile or Euphrates: in the night wind the blast of the desert again passes by: and on the bleak moor that Rock of ages, that has been his shadow from the heat, again stands before him, desolate yet precious. These feelings may by some be deemed enthusiastic: but no man ever succeeded in an Eastern journey, plucked its roses from its many thorns, and, in spite of fears and sorrows, went on rejoicing in his way - who was not an enthusiast. Book Travels in Egypt and Nubia Syria and the Holy Land

Download or read book Travels in Egypt and Nubia Syria and the Holy Land written by Charles Leonard Irby and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Egypt and Nubia, Syria, and the Holy Land: Including a Journey Round the Dead Sea, and Through the Country East of the Jordan On the 14th of August, 1816, the Hon. Charles Leonard Irby and James Mangles, Commanders in the Royal Navy, left England, with the intention of making a tour on the Continent. This journey they were led to extend far beyond the original design. Curiosity at first, and an increasing admiration of antiquities as they advanced, carried them at length through several parts of the Levant, which have been little visited by modem travellers, and gave them more than four years of continued employment. Soon after their return to England, in the end of the year 1820, they were induced to transcribe a selection of the letters which they had addressed during their absence to their families in England, as the most convenient mode of satisfying the inquiries of numerous friends. A limited Edition, for private circulation only, was in consequence printed: this was so well received, and the copies were in such request, that Mr. Murray has been solicited, as a small mark of the friendship and esteem of the writers, kindly to accept the copyright, and further to oblige them by giving the book publicity in the more popular form of his Colonial and Home Library. Book The Holy Land Syria Idumea Arabia Egypt and Nubia Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Holy Land Syria Idumea Arabia Egypt and Nubia Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by David Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, Vol. 5 This additional view of the facade of the Great Temple of aboo-simbel has been chosen by Mr. Roberts in further illustration of the subject. Descriptions, as far as the limit of our text allows, have been given of the various parts and aspects of this stupendous excavation and sculpture from the living rock; as well as of the original discovery of its existence by Burckhardt, the first access to its interior by Belzoni, and the further exposure of a part of its facade to its base by Mr. Hay. The effect of this wonderful Temple upon travellers who have been fortunate enough to visit it has been, without exception, of the same impressive character. Warburton, in The Crescent and the Cross, says Here, at the Temple of Osiris, a space of about one hundred feet in height is hewn from the mountain, smooth, except for the reliefs. Along the summit runs a frieze of monkeys, in long array; than succeed a line of hieroglyphics and some faintly-carved figures, also in relief; and then four colossal giants, that seem to guard the portal. They are seated on thrones, which form, with themselves, part of the living rock, and are about sixty feet high. One is quite perfect, admirably cut, and the proportions accurately preserved; the second is defaced as far as the knee; the third is buried in sand to the waist; and the fourth has only the face and neck visible above the Desert's sandy avalanche. The doorway stands between the two central statues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Travels in Syria and the Holy Land

Download or read book Travels in Syria and the Holy Land written by John Lewis Burckhardt and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travels in Syria and the Holy Land by John Lewis Burckhardt I had intended to sleep at Om Ezzeitoun, but I found the Druses very ill-disposed towards me. It was generally reported that I had discovered a treasure in 1810 at Shohba, near this place, and it was supposed that I had now returned to carry off what I had then left behind. I had to combat against this story at almost every place, but I was nowhere so rudely received as at this village, where I escaped ill treatment only by assuming a very imposing air, and threatening with many oaths, that if I lost a single hair of my beard, the Pasha would levy an avania of many purses on the village. I had with me an old passport from Soleiman Pasha, who, though no longer governor of Damascus, had been charged pro tempore with the government till the arrival of the new Pasha, who was expected from Constantinople. Book The Giant Cities of Bashan and Syria s Holy Places Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Giant Cities of Bashan and Syria's Holy Places During all my journeys the bible was my constant companion. I read its prophecies, as well as its history, amid the scenes to which they refer. I could not shut my eyes to the graphic details of the Record, nor to the ruin and desolations of the land; and I could not resist the conclusions which a careful comparison forced upon me. I do not wish, my Lord, to make you in any way responsible for these conclusions, or for the views I have ventured to express. Free thought and free Inquiry, con ducted honestly, and in the case of the Bible reverentially, is the right of every man. This, while fully granting it to others, I claim for myself. I have in all cases attempted to exhibit two pictures, - one of the country, as seen by myself; another as sketched by the Hebrew prophets. My readers, if not satisfied with my conclusions, can draw their own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the first place, I am under a debt of gratitude for the courtesy and liberality with which the librarians of the great public libraries of Paris, Munich, London, and Oxford, have answered my demands for access to the treasures in their charge.
