Book 100 Years of the World Series

Download or read book 100 Years of the World Series written by Eric Enders and published by Sterling. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tribute to the World Series is packed with nearly 600 outstanding photographs and illustrations and features box scores for every World Series game played over the championship's first 100 years. Written by noted baseball historian Eric Enders, whose passion for the game shines through on every page, 100 Years of the World Series is the most detailed popular reference work ever published on the greatest sports championship in the world. The World Series has captivated sports fans since its very beginning - the hard-fought final contest between the two best teams of the year not only excites, but also creates the mythology of modern life. Baseball itself is part of our cultural fiber, and the Fall Classic is the sport's crucible, where dynasties are born, heroes made, and human nature put to the test. In early autumn, millions of fans eat, breathe, and sleep baseball, embracing the excitement and anxiety of the season - hoping to avoid the tragedy of a loss, and to exult in the glory of a championship. In this comprehensive work, Eric Enders recounts the fascinating history of the Series, describing the sensational events and outstanding performances that are forever etched into the memories of baseball fans around the world. The fall season was forever changed in October 1903, when baseball's first World Series began a postseason tradition that would mark nearly every future October through the next century. From the very start, the World Series has seen the sport's most iconic moments.

Book The First World Series and the Baseball Fanatics of 1903

Download or read book The First World Series and the Baseball Fanatics of 1903 written by Roger I. Abrams and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recapturing the drama and color of this historic sporting event, Roger I. Abrams shows how the first world series (Boston Americans vs. Pittsburgh Pirates) provided a unique lens to view American life and culture at the dawn of the twentieth century. It is a fascinating story brimming with colorful, larger-than-life characters: legendary players Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Jimmy Collins, Fred Clarke, Big Bill Dineen, and Deacon Phillippe on the field; and Mike "Nuf Ced" McGreevey, "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, and the boisterous Boston Royal Rooters, cheering, chanting, and singing in the grandstands. This is also the story of how the post-season play gave disparate classes in society--Brahmins, industrialists, Irish politicians, Jewish immigrants--the rare opportunity to join in common support of their local teams and heroes.

Book The 1903 World Series

Download or read book The 1903 World Series written by Andy Dabilis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first World Series was a best-of-nine series between the Boston Americans and the Pittsburg Pirates, with the first three games to be played in Boston starting at the Huntington Avenue Grounds on October 1, 1903. The series started with baseball's winningest pitcher, Cy Young, throwing the first pitch, and ended with baseball's greatest hitter, Honus Wagner, striking out on the last pitch. Boston won the series, five games to three. Each game of the 1903 World Series and its key plays and players are thoroughly covered here, and the authors also pay special attention to the great significance that first World Series held for the future of baseball. Not only was the survival of the American League at stake, but baseball's place as the preeminent sport in America. The 1903 World Series drew more than 100,000 people to the ballparks, and there was no doubt about the popularity of the game. It was, as the authors point out, played by men, who, had they not been baseball players, would have been among the working class that made up most of the audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'd like to thank you remaining reading dinosaurs for your interest in this project. I believe this compilation of baseball championship statistics differs from any previous attempts at documenting the history of the World Series.Since the Sports Encyclopedia-Baseball was discontinued by the Neft brothers & Richard Cohen there are few, if any, books that specifically delve into the Fall Classic with the fervor of World Series Chronology.Even if "Encyclopedia" were still available it would pale comparatively regarding the convenience "Chronology" provides. Their Baseball Encyclopedia, a wonderful and informative text to be sure, made the reader dig very deep to find information and determine how that data compared to similar numbers and teams from different eras. The World Series Chronology, as it states in the title, compares contrasts & coordinates the champions. For instance; if one were curious to know which team comes the closest to the New York Yankees record 5 consecutive titles (1949-53) one could in fact garner the answer in "Encyclopedia" after substantial investigation. But in "Chronology" it's easy to see that the Oakland Athletics string of 3 straight (1972-74) is the next franchise in line.Or if someone was interested in knowing which two teams faced one another the most times in World Series competition, again this could be found after much tracking in another publication. Finding that the Yankees and Dodgers have met 11 times would not be impossible to decipher from the "Encyclopedia". But again, "Chronology" does all the research and the information jumps right off the page for the reader. The Yanks dominated the BROOKLYN Dodgers in their 7 meetings, by winning 6 times. But since the Dodgers have moved to Los Angeles the teams have split their 4 match-ups evenly. These are just two examples of the myriad of comparisons, contrasts, & relative similarities of all of the franchises that have played the glorious game of baseball into the fall.Want to know what teams dominated a specific decade in their respective league? Or how many times? How about how many times have teams that won 100 games in the regular season have faced one another in the Fall Classic? Which team has the most sweeps? Who got there with the least amount of wins? How they all fare historically? Which league holds the edge? What effect does winning a title have on that team's city's crime rate? All of this information, combined with anecdotes, social & historical correlations, and so much more is conveniently at the disposal of the reader.Thank you for your time. I suspect that afterward, you'll thank me for mine.

To actually pick up a book & hold it in your hands while turning pages is something tangibly enjoyable. Download or read book New York Times Story of the Yankees written by The New York Times and published by Black Dog & Leventhal. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience a century of the pride, power, and pinstripes of the Yankees, Major League Baseball's most successful team, as told through the stories of their hometown newspaper, The New York Times. The New York Yankees are the most storied franchise in baseball history. They consistently draw the largest home and away crowds of any team, command the largest broadcast audiences in baseball, draw the greatest number of on-line followers, and routinely sell more copies of books and magazines than any other professional sports team. The New York Times Story of the Yankees includes more than 350 articles chronicling the team's most famous milestones—as well as the best writing about the ball club. Each article is hand-selected from The Times by the peerless sportswriter Dave Anderson, creating the most complete and compelling history to date about the Yankees. Organized by era, the book covers the biggest stories and events in Yankee history, such as the purchase of Babe Ruth, Roger Maris's 61st home run, and David Cone's perfect game. It chronicles the team's 27 World Series championships and 40 American League pennants; its rivalries with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox; controversial owners, players, and managers; and more. The articles span the years from 1903—when the team was known as the New York Highlanders—to the present, and include stories from well-known and beloved Times reporters such as Arthur Daley, John Kieran, Leonard Koppett, Red Smith, Tyler Kepner, Ira Berkow, Richard Sandomir, Jim Roach, and George Vecsey. Hundreds of black-and-white photographs throughout capture every era. A foreword by die-hard Yankees fan, Alec Baldwin, completes the celebration of baseball's greatest team.
