Book The History of the Papacy in the 19th Century Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Papacy in the 19th Century Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Frederik Nielsen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Papacy in the 19th Century, Vol. 2 ON 2nd September 1823, thirty-seven of the Roman cardinals walked from the church of San Silvestro to the Quirinal,1 which on account of the time of year had been prepared for the Conclave. In the long procession the first to be seen was Consalvi, bowed down by sorrow and sickness.2 He had but little prospect of being elected, because a man cannot be twice Pope in a lifetime. The cardinals were afraid of the all-powerful Secretary of State, and the people sang a malicious verse about the Conclave: Heaven free us from a despot like Consalvi.3 After him followed Pacca with firm steps and a mild countenance, and by his side walked the old Di Gregorio. Behind came Galeffi, who did not look at all intelligent, but had become the favourite of the people by his condescension. It would be wise, so runs the song, to elect the good Graleffi.4 In the procession there was also a tall lean man with tottering steps and pale cheeks it looked, says Cardinal Wiseman, as if he had just risen from a sick bed to lay himself down upon his death-bed. The man was Della Genga; of him the song says He who wishes for order in everything, must pray that Della Genga may be chosen. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Papacy in the Xixth Century, Vol. 1 This Second Edition of Pavedommet i den nittende Hundredaar is so different from the first that it may almost be called a new book. Besides the introductory section, practically the whole of the second volume is printed from a fresh manuscript, and that part of the first volume, the history of Pius VII., for which the former edition served as a basis, contains many pages that are wholly new, and only few which have not received some addition or alteration. When I first put forth this sketch of the modern Papacy, I had never seen Rome, and I hardly knew the Roman Church except through books. I owe it to the Ministry for Ecclesiastical and Educational Affairs, and the Carlsberg Fund, that in repeated visits to Italy, Germany, France, and Belgium, of longer or shorter duration, I have been enabled to make studies for this work, and to become personally acquainted with several of the men who have taken a part in making the recent history of the Papacy. It was my idea to conclude my account with a brief view of the chief points in the papacy of Leo XIII., like those pages in the First Edition which dealt with the years immediately following the Vatican Council. But I have abandoned that design for several reasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Papacy and Crusading in Europe 1198 1245

Download or read book The Papacy and Crusading in Europe 1198 1245 written by Rebecca Rist and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An 'internal' crusade is defined as a holy war authorized by the pope and fought within Christian Europe against those perceived to be foes of Christendom, either to recover property or in defense of the Church or Christians. This study is therefore not concerned with those crusades authorized against Muslim enemies in the East and Spain, nor with crusades authorized against pagans on the borders of Europe. Up to now these crusades have attracted relatively little attention in modern British scholarship. This in spite of their undoubted European-wide significance and an increasing recognition that the period 1198-1245 marks the beginning of a crucial change in papal policy underpinned by canon law. This book discusses the developments through analysis of the extensive source material drawn from unregistered papal letters, placing them firmly in the context of ecclesiastical legislation, canon law, chronicles and other supplementary evidence. It thereby seeks to contribute to our understanding of the complex politics, theology and rhetoric that underlay the papacy's call for crusades within Europe in the first half of the thirteenth century.
