This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General View of the History of the English Bible In the following Essay I have endeavoured to call attention to some points in the history of the English Bible which have been strangely neglected. The history of our Bible is indeed a type of the history of our Church, and both histories have suffered the same fate. The writers who have laboured most successfully upon them have in the main confined themselves to outward facts without tracing the facts back to their ultimate sources, or noticing the variety of elements which go to form the final result. As far as I know no systematic inquiry into the internal history of our Authorised Version has yet been made, and still no problem can offer greater scope for fruitful research. Download or read book A Book about the English Bible Classic Reprint written by Josiah H. Penniman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book About the English Bible Tms volume is simply what its title indicates, A Book about the English Bible. It has grown out of a series of lectures delivered to students in the University of Pennsylvania, the purpose of which was to give a brief account of the English Bible, its immediate sources and their contents, their literary background and surroundings, the forms and characteristics of the constituent books and their relation to each other. To the chapters, in which these subjects are suggested, rather than discussed, have been added several others containing a short history of the translation of the Bible into English, from Saxon times to our own day. Attention is called to the differences between the commonly used English versions as regards contents and translation, and to the reasons for the differences. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the History and Recent Collation: Of the English Version of the Bible In respect to the accessories of the text, comprehending the contents of the chapters, the running heads of the columns, the marginal readings and references, and the chronology, the Bibles of the present day are much less conformed to the original edition. The translators, as we have seen, were to append no marginal notes at all, but only for the explanation of the Hebrew or Greek words; and also fit references Of one Scripture to another. To this requirement the early editions were entirely conformed; and the marginal references were very few. In the lapse of time, however, extensive changes and additions have been made in most of the above particulars. The contents of the chapters only have been preserved in the editions of larger size, without very great variation while in copies of a smaller form, these likewise have been frequently and variously altered and abbreviated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Bible: History of the Translation of the Holy Scriptures Into the English Tongue, With Specimens of the Old English Versions From these remarks it will be seen, that a critical description of editions and copies does not come within the design of this volume. Such a work, I am happy to know, may be expected from a gentleman, whose intimate ac quaintance with the subject warrants the belief that it will be one of great interest and valuecome the means of communicating to other minds a more lively and more intelligent interest in the sub jcet of which it treats. No other Christian people can show a vernacular Bible with such a history as ours so consecrated byhigh purpose and noble sacrifice, so baptized in the tears and blood of faithful souls, so linked with the inmost life and history of the people. At what cost the Divine Word has been placed in the possession of the English race, and what it has done for that race, are matters which every Christian and every lover of his country has an interest in knowing. Without such knowledge, we can neither rightly estimate its value, nor labor intelligently for the perpetuation of its in uence. Download or read book The History of the English Bible written by Blackford Condit and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the English Bible: Extending From the Earliest Saxon Translations to the Present Anglo-American Revision Intimately connected with the religious stands the literary element in this conflict of languages. At the period of the Norman Conquest the Saxon tongue had a hard struggle for mere existence. It was driven from the court and palace, but it took refuge around the firesides of the peasantry. The Latin tongue even down to the Elizabethan age was the literary language. But during this same period the English language had become a power, and by its inherent vitality was already the giant that succeeding centuries have proved it to be. And prominent among the causes which lie at the foundation of this victory of the English over the Latin tongue we must recognize the fact of early translations of the Scriptures into the language of the people. The design of the following chapters was not to treat this subject at large. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
