Download or read book In Times of War Prince Rupert 1939 1945 written by Sue Harper Rowse and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immediately following Pearl Harbour, the United States shipping facilities in the Pacific were running at full capacity, but it was still not enough to combat the serious Japanese threat. At this critical juncture, Prince Rupert, located in British Columbia, Canada, was placed at America's disposal, to ship troops and materials to Alaska to fend off the enemy. It was, as many called it, an American Invasion. With Japanese submarines lurking off of Prince Rupert, thousands of Canadian Army, Navy, and Air Force, were posted to man the fort defence system, fly reconnaissance missions, and protect the dry dock and shipyard, all vital to the Pacific war effort. All eyes were peeled for the enemy. The City was truly at war. Drawing from a diverse field of information, making use of published, primary, first hand recollections, and photographs, this book puts the events and developments of these years all together into one definitive source.
Download or read book A Thousand Blunders written by Frank Leonard and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Thousand Blunders, Frank Leonard looks at why the 'Road of a Thousand Wonders' failed to live up to the expectations forecast by company president Charles M. Hays and other senior managers. Not only was the railway built through a sparsely settled region, which generated little immediate traffic, but its economic difficulties were also compounded by the numerous mistakes made by managers at all levels: for example, their failure to respond adequately to labour shortages caused serious delays and prevented the company from proving Prince Rupert as an effective alternative harbour before World War I broke out. For this book, Frank Leonard had access to a wealth of original documents, among them the GTP legal department files, providing him with insights into the decisions that formed the basis for policies in townsites and on Indian reserves. A Thousand Blunders is a provocative account of one of the greatest failures in Canadian entrepreneurial history. Richly detailed and thoroughly documented, it makes an important contribution to the fields of railway and business history, as well as to the study of the history of northern British Columbia.

Download or read book Carving the Western Path written by R. G. Harvey and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of British Columbia's transportation systems north of the Canadian National Railway's mainline may not be well known—but it certainly is colourful. Continuing the story he began in the first volume of Carving the Western Path, R.G. Harvey describes the development of river, road and rail routes that crossed the northern two-thirds of BC. This was a land of dreams and schemes that seemed to feed on each other. It started with the Collins Overland Telegraph, a communication link that was to connect Europe and America in the 1860s. Though this plan collapsed with the success of the trans-Atlantic cable, the telegraph surveyors established patterns for future roads and settlement. They also sparked the Omineca gold rush. It was a land full of larger-than-life characters, including: Charles Hays, who dreamed of a major seaport at Prince Rupert but died on the Titanic before he could realize his vision Charles Bedaux, who in the 1930s carved his 416-mile path into the northern Rockies Railway promoters Warburton Pike, Sir Edward Phillipps-Wolley, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, who got gifts of land and money but couldn't always meet their promises. Their stories mingle with those of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, the Alaska Highway, the White Pass and Yukon Railway and those of the sternwheelers, fur traders, gold miners and other adventurers who were drawn to this last frontier.
