Smith N had brought to its close his graphic story of the Town of Pittsfield. Meanwhile the town had given place to the city. The men and women who gave color to the life of the town had passed from the stage. It was still possible, however, to recall the tale of these years, the faces, the speech, the deeds, of those who had played their parts in it; but no time was to be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Pittsfield, (Berkshire County), Massachusetts, Vol. 2: Part 2; From the Year 1800 to the Year 1876 So many causes combined to break down the Berkshire: Medical Institution that the wonder is that it sustained itself so long as it did. The final and chronic difficulty lay in the fact that it never was free from debt, except for a brief interval at the time of the building of the new college, and that, although the trustees in that halcyon period voted to set apart one thousand dollars, as a nucleus for a fund, the institution in fact never had any such foundation, even to that extent. The sole reliance for meeting the current expenses of the college was upon the tuition of students a variable and precarious resource, which was sure to fail when most needed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Pittsfield (Berkshire County), Massachusetts, From the Year 1800 to the Year 1876 Our intention has been to give prominence to those events, enterprises, and institutions which have had an essential bearing upon the town's prosperity. We have also desired to do some justice to the men who have given it character, and labored for its good. In some instances, lack of material has rendered it impossible to accomplish this as fully as we could wish; and possibly we may have sometimes erred in judgment; but we have sincerely aimed to be impartial, and believe that substantial justice has been done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pittsfield is truly the heart of the Berkshires. The Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts have long been a cultural hub and an area of exceptional natural beauty, and Pittsfield, the area's largest community, has always been at the center of attention. The town center, now known as Park Square, was the site of the first agricultural fair ever held in the United States, and Pittsfield became well-known as the adopted home of such literary luminaries as Oliver Wendell Holmes and Herman Melville, who wrote his classic novel Moby-Dick at his home, Arrowhead. In addition to Pittsfield's rich cultural heritage, the town's commerce and industry have fueled the region from the early days when Arthur Scholfield operated the only wool-carding machine in America, to the city's more recent role as an innovator in the electrical industry. Pittsfield celebrates the scenic beauty, the cultural heritage, and the ingenuity of the people and places of the town using nearly 200 vintage images. Inside find Pittsfield's famous sons and daughters, scenic novelties like Balance Rock, the diving horses that performed at Pontoosuc Lake, and even the famous trolley wreck that almost killed Theodore Roosevelt.
