As you would expect, jute, jam and journalism are covered, but for many ordinary Dundonians the real interest will be in the views of their part of the city showing familiar streets and shops prior to redevelopment. Bill Early's wonderful collection of postcards of the city forms the bulk of the material illustrated, while he and Eric Eunson have collaborated to produce a narrative that will be of interest to both Dundonians and visitors to the city.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Old Dundee: Narrated Out of the Town Council Register, With Additions From Contemporary Annals I at first proposed to print the records chronologically, as has been done with those of some other burghs, but a careful consideration convinced me that this would not be a very satisfactory arrangement, as many of them are short, detached, and intermixed references, which could hardly prove intelligible, and would not be of special historical interest, unless those relating to each other were conjoined in regular sequence. The method which I then adopted of condensing the materials into separate articles, arranged, with marginal dates, in a narrative form, implied a considerable amount of labour, but I felt that this should not be grudged if it would have the effect of developing their proper meaning and realising their full value. I have found in contemporary annals - in the Acts of the Scottish Parliament, especially in that portion of them which was lately printed from the volumes found in the London State Paper Ofiice, in the recently published volumes of the Register of the Privy Council, and in other historical authorities, general and local - many references to the burgh which throw light upon its history and records, and have embodied them also in the narrative; and I have printed in the appendix some inter esting and important additions derived from original documents. It has been my endeavour to retain as far as possible the quaint and pithy language of the old writings, but I have considerably modernised the spelling - this being so irregular as to be frequently confusing excepting in the case of words of antiquarian or philological interest, which I have invariably printed as they are written, giving explanation of their meanings in notes, when such seemed necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Dundee: Ecclesiastical, Burghal, and Social, Prior to the Reformation At the time of the publication of my History of Old Dundee which deals almost entirely with matters subsequent to the Reforma tion - my intent ion was to have followed it with another volume bringing the subject down to a later period. Having, however, made an examination of the Burgh Court Records - which begin at a much earlier date than the Council Register, on which my History is mainly founded - I discovered that the earliest of them are of so much interest and importance as illustrations of pre-reformation times, that I resolved to delay the execution of this intention, and devote myself to the production of a separate work in elucidation of a period for which there is such ample and valuable material. This does not lead to repetitions; for, at the few points where the dates of the History and this work overlap, the subjects are usually different. The first volume of the Records is the one already de scribed as The Book of the Church, originally intended to contain the inventories of the altar ornaments in St. Mary's Church, but which, after having been only in small part used for that purpose, was filled up with the Records of the Burgh Court from 28th November, 1520, to 13th October, 1523, with an additional entry the following August This is the oldest historical volume in the city archives, and its preservation from the destruction which befall the others in 1 548, is probably due, as before noticed, to its having been carried abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Dundee: Being an Account of the Origin and Progress of the Burgh In justification of a new book, and more especially one of historical character, two things may fairly be required, - that the subject should possess some interest in itself, and that it should be presented with some degree of skill and completeness. That the first of these conditions will be apparent in this case the author is well assured, however diffident he may feel as to the merits of his performance. That was undertaken more from regard to the necessity of meeting a want long felt to exist than from any sense of special fitness for the task. Until the appearance of Thomson's work in 1847, no proper History of the town existed. Dr Small's contribution to the Statistical Account of Scotland, published toward the end of last century, although valuable in its way, did not profess to cover the ground required in an exhaustive history of the town. Since 1847, the researches of a host of able writers have thrown much light on local as well as national history, and made the incompleteness of the original edition, in many respects, more obvious; besides which it has long been out of print. In proceeding to supply the want referred to, the intention at first was to reproduce the original work so far as it went, with such corrections as might be derived from later authorities, and accordingly the earlier sheets were revised, with the emendations indicated in the text, or put in the form of notes. Before proceeding very far, however, it became apparent, from the necessity of large excisions and additions, that this course was unsatisfactory, and the greater part of the work has therefore been re-written.
