This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Preliminary View of the French Revolution On the execution of his task, it becomes the author to be silent. He is aware it must exhibit many faults but he claims credit for having brought to the undertaking a mind disposed to do his sub ject as impartial justice as his judgment could supply. He will be found no enemy to the person of Napoleon. The term of bestill ty is ended when the battle has been won, and the foe exists no longer. His splendid personal qualities-his great military actions and poutical services to France, will not, it is hoped, be found lessened in the narrative. Unhappily, the author's task involved a duty of another kind, 'the discharge of which is due to France, to Britain, to Europe, and to the world. If the general system of Napoleon has rested upon force or fraud, it is neither the great ness of his talents, nor the success of his undertakings, that ought to stifle the voice or dazzle the eyes of him who adventures to be 'his historian. The reasons, however, are carefully summed up where the author has presumed to express a favourable or unfa vourable opinion of the distinguished person of whom these vol umes treat; so that each reader may judge of their validity for himself. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Vol. 2 of 4 After this, the French army marched for eight days without meeting any interruption, but often reduced to the greatest straits, and in one of the most scorching climates in the world. During the route they were much harassed by clouds of Arabs flocking from all parts of the Deserts, and hovering within a few hundred yards of the camp, with a view to intercept the communications, and to rob and murder all they could lay hands on. Their prae tice was to lie in ambush behind the dykes on their excellent little horses, and woe to him who stragg led a hundred paces from the main column! They killed a great number of soldiers and ofiicers. Among others, General Muireur, in Spite of the remon strances of the Guard, would go alone to a mount about two hun dred paces from the camp. Behind it were three Bedouins, who assassinated him. His death was much lamented by the army and by the general-in-chief. In the evening after the first day's march, the tr00ps bivouacked at a place called Shabur, under some fine old sycamores, where they found the fields full of bat ferjts, a species of water-melon, furnishing a wholesome and re freshing food. They met with them continually, as far as Cairo; and the soldier, to Show how agreeable this fruit was to him, named it, like the ancient Egyptians, the holy bat-tech. On the following day, the army began its march very late; some meat had been procured, which it was necessary to distribute with care as it was a great luxury. The flotilla still waited for the north wind to ascend the Nile. The army slept at Kounscheric; and arrived the next day at Alkam, where General Zayonscheck re s1ved orders to land on the Opposite bank, and advance to the point of the Delta. As there were no Arabs here, he could make what movements he pleased, and was of great assistance in pro uring provisions. Download or read book History of Napoleon Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by George Moir Bussey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Napoleon, Vol. 2 of 2 On the same day, a deputation from the kingdom of Italy waited upon the Sovereign, to unite its felicitations with those of the empire. Napoleon seemed to have become an object of adoration to all those who, by their relation to him or his government, were in any way participators of his glory. He alone was the same man as formerly, and remained undazzled by the splendour which invested his person and name. His reply to his Italian subjects has less of pomp or assumption than many of the proclamations published when he was merely General-in-chief of the Army of Italy. I experienced pe culiar satisfaction, he said, in the course of the last campaign, in Witnessing the excellent conduct of my Italian troops. For the first time, after many ages, the Italians have won renown in the great theatre of the world. I hope that this happy commencement will excite the emulation of the nation, - that the maidens of my good kingdom, when they choose husbands, will distinguish between youths who lounge away their days in the boudoir, and those who are marked with honourable scars obtained in the service of their country. You may inform my people, on your return, that I intend shortly to make a tour of my Italian dominions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
