Book The History of Mr Fantom

Download or read book The History of Mr Fantom written by Hannah More and published by Curiosmith. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Fantom took up studying popular philosophy as a way to “draw public notice and distinguish himself” in society. His mind was filled with vain imaginations and grandiose plans that he espoused at his hangout called the Cat and Bagpipes. However, Mr. Trueman asked him to do good and challenged him to offer simple help to someone nearby. This idea was simply too mundane for such a high minded fellow who was solving the world’s problems, so he did nothing about it. This story unfolds in a tense debate between these two different outlooks. This chapbook was written to counteract the influences of people such as Thomas Paine, who wrote “Rights of Man” and “Age of Reason” that were widely circulated during this period, in cheap editions, and were regarded as a negative influence.

Book The Reading Lesson

Download or read book The Reading Lesson written by Patrick Brantlinger and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1998-12-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[Brantlinger's] writing is admirably lucid, his knowledge impressive and his thesis a welcome reminder of the class bias that so often accompanies denunciations of popular fiction." —Publishers Weekly "Brantlinger is adept at discussing both the fiction itself and the social environment in which that fiction was produced and disseminated. He brings to his study a thorough knowledge of traditional and contemporary scholarship, which results in an important scholarly book on Victorian fiction and its production." —Choice "Timely, scrupulously researched, thoroughly enlightening, and steadily readable. . . . A work of agenda-setting historical scholarship." —Garrett Stewart Fear of mass literacy stalks the pages of Patrick Brantlinger's latest book. Its central plot involves the many ways in which novels and novel reading were viewed—especially by novelists themselves—as both causes and symptoms of rotting minds and moral decay among nineteenth-century readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her own time and in ours, Hannah More (1745-1833) has been seen as a benefactress of the poor, writing and working selflessly to their benefit. Mona Scheuermann argues, however, that More's agenda was not simply to help the poor but to control them, for the upper classes in late eighteenth-century England were terrified that the poor would rise in revolt against Church and King. As much social history as literary study, In Praise of Poverty shows that More's writing to the poor specifically is intended to counter the perceived rabble rousing of Thomas Paine and other radicals active in the 1790s. In fact, her Village Politics was written by request of the Bishop of London as a direct response to Paine's Rights of Man. The much larger project of the Cheap Repository Tracts followed, and More was still writing in this vein two decades later. Scheuermann effectively, and perhaps controversially, places More in the context of her period's debate about the poor, proving More to be not a defender of the poor but of the conservative upper-class values she so wholeheartedly espoused.

Book The Revolution in Popular Literature

Download or read book The Revolution in Popular Literature written by Ian Haywood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new look at the evolution of popular literature in Britain in the Romantic and Victorian periods. Making use of a wide range of archival and primary sources, he argues that radical politics played a decisive role in the transformation of popular literature. By charting the key moments in the history of 'cheap' literature, the book casts new light on the many neglected popular genres and texts: the 'pig's meat' anthology, the female-authored didactic tale, and Chartist fiction.
