Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As set out in Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian's 1841 book "History of the Moors of Spain" the primitive Moors were originally the inhabitants of the vast portion of Africa bounded on the east by Egypt, on the north by the Mediterranean, on the west by the Atlantic, and on the south by the deserts of Barbary. The origin of the Moors, or Mauritanians, is, like that of most other ancient nations, obscure, and the information we possess concerning their early history confusedly mingled with fables. The fact, however, appears to be established, that Asiatic emigrations were, from the earliest times, made into Africa. In discussing the history of the Moors in Spain Florian divides his historical sketch in four principal Epochs. The first extends from the commencement of the Conquests of the Arabs to the Establishment of the Dynasty of the Ommiade princes at Cordova. The second includes the reigns of the Caliphs of the West. The third relates all that can now be ascertained concerning the various small kingdoms erected from the ruins of the Caliphate of Cordova. The fourth comprehends a narration of the prominent events in the lives of the successive sovereigns of the Kingdom of Grenada, until the period of the final expulsion of the Moslem from that country.Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1755 - 1794) was a poet, romance writer, and author of historical works. Florian was very fond of Spain and its literature, doubtless owing to the influence of his Castilian mother, and both abridged and imitated the works of Cervantes.

Book A Concise History of the Moors in Spain

Download or read book A Concise History of the Moors in Spain written by Thomas Bourke and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE Moors continued in unmolested possession of Spain for the space of eight hundred years, a period much exceeding that in which it was held by the former conquerors of that country, the Carthaginians and Romans. Of the real history of Spain, while it remained under the subjugation of the Moors, it is exceedingly difficult to obtain accurate and authentic knowledge. The writers on the subject are either Arabs or Spaniards, from both of whom the inclination to favour their respective countrymen, may not unreasonably be expected. The Spanish writers abound with all the severity of reproach and invective against the Moors; and the Moorish historians, will be found, on all occasions, to exaggerate the virtues, the conquests, the glory of the Mahometans; to conceal their defects, and palliate their crimes. Mr. Bourke, in this compilation from confused and discordant materials; has presented the reader with a history, which, as it is throughout uniform arid consistent, carries with it the greatest probability of being most consonant with the real truth. The work consists of four books, of which the First treats of the Conquests of the Arabs in Spain, till the period of the establishment of the Ommiadæan Caliphs at Cordova; comprizing from the end of the Sixth to the middle of the Eighth Century. The Second Book gives the history of the Eastern Caliphs to the end of the Empire of the Caliphs of the West, and comprizes the Middle of the Eighth as far as the Eleventh Century. The Third Book, which is the most interesting of the whole, and comprizes a large portion of time, describes the history of Spain from the commencement of the Eleventh to the Middle of the Fourteenth Century. The Fourth and last Book, which also is very curious, exhibits the Origin of the Kingdom of Granada, and is continued to the final Expulsion of the Moors from Spain. -The British Critic: A New Review, Volume 40 [1812]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1482, Abu Abdallah Muhammad XI became the twenty-third Muslim King of Granada. He would be the last. This is the first history of the ruler, known as Boabdil, whose disastrous reign and bitter defeat brought seven centuries of Moorish Spain to an end. It is an action-packed story of intrigue, treachery, cruelty, cunning, courtliness, bravery and tragedy. Basing her vivid account on original documents and sources, Elizabeth Drayson traces the origins and development of Islamic Spain. She describes the thirteenth-century founding of the Nasrid dynasty, the cultured and stable society it created, and the feuding which threatened it and had all but destroyed it by 1482, when Boabdil seized the throne. The new Sultan faced betrayals by his family, factions in the Alhambra palace, and ever more powerful onslaughts from the forces of Ferdinand and Isabella, monarchs of the newly united kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. By stratagem, diplomacy, courage and strength of will Boabdil prolonged his reign for ten years, but he never had much chance of survival. In 1492 Ferdinand and Isabella, magnificently attired in Moorish costume, entered Granada and took possession of the city. Boabdil went into exile. The Christian reconquest of Spain, that has reverberated so powerfully down the centuries, was complete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1609, the entire Muslim population of Spain was given three days to leave Spanish territory or else be killed. In a brutal and traumatic exodus, entire families were forced to abandon the homes and villages where they had lived for generations. In just five years, Muslim Spain had effectively ceased to exist: an estimated 300,000 Muslims had been removed from Spanish territory making it what was then the largest act of ethnic cleansing in European history. Blood and Faith is a riveting chronicle of this virtually unknown episode, set against the vivid historical backdrop of Muslim Spain. It offers a remarkable window onto a little-known period in modern Europe - a rich and complex tale of competing faiths and beliefs, of cultural oppression and resistance against overwhelming odds.

Book excerpt: An objective and compelling overview of the Moorish occupation of Spain, from the time of their first landings in Iberia to their final expulsion in 1492, written by one of France's greatest authors. This work became one of the standard histories of the era of Moorish rule in Spain and covered not just the military campaigns but also the cultural achievements of that time. Divided into four "epochs," this work starts with a recounting of the Muslim expansion across the Middle East and North Africa after Islam's founding by Mohammed the Prophet. It then moves on to describe exactly how the Moors then crossed the Mediterranean Sea to occupy the Iberian Peninsula. Next, it details the establishment of the Caliphate in Spain and its abortive attempts to extend its rule into France. The internal divisions within Islam and even within the Caliphate eventually led to its downfall, and replacement with individual Islamic kingdoms, which, divided as they were, became easy prey for the Christian Reconquista. Finally, the narrative ends with the fall of the last Islamic stronghold in Spain, Grenada, in 1492. In addition, this work reveals much of Islamic culture and science, and how that religion played an important role in preserving much classical thought for later Western European civilization. The second part of the book, added by later authors, then provides a fascinating nineteenth-century European assessment of Islam, and how the dominance of Wahhabism portended a revival in the more extreme parts of that region and its followers. A classic study of the Moorish invasion in Spain which has lost none of its vitality or drama. This new edition has been completely reset, is fully foot- and end-noted, and contains a new index. Book excerpt: About The Book Taking his interest in the Islamic conquest to its northwestern frontier, Lane-Pool here considers the history of the Moors in Spain. Beginning with the end of the Goth reign in Spain, he moves on to a plain account of the conquest. The famous battles and their various outcomes are recorded. Spain, divided along the territory of Andalusia, was now under the influence of the Moors. Lane-Pool narrates the adventures of Abdur-Rahman and his role in the history of southern Spain where Christians were martyred and he eventually became the great khalif. Skirmishes and battles between the Muslim and Christian populations of Spain and the wonders of Cordova are likewise narrated. Takeover by the Berbers and the rise of El Cid are included in the broad sweep of the conquest. The establishment and fall of Granada mark the final events covered in this history. A gripping account for students of history, this treatment of the Islamic presence in Europe is a solid piece of research that has stood the test of time. About The Author Stanley Lane-Poole (1854-1931) was a British Orientalist and archaeologist. He began his career in the British Museum, but moved to Egypt where he worked as an archaeologist.
