Book A Mediterranean Emporium

Download or read book A Mediterranean Emporium written by David Abulafia and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated astride the trade routes of the western Mediterranean, the Catalan kingdom of Majorca has long deserved attention. It was established under the will of King James I of Aragon, who conquered Majorca in 1229, but was ruled from 1276 to 1343 by a cadet dynasty. In addition to the Balearic Islands the kingdom included the key business centres of Montpellier and Perpignan, and other lands in what is now southern France. It was also home to important Jewish and Muslim communities, and was the focus of immigration from Catalonia, Provence and Italy. This book emphasises the major transformations in the trade of the Balearic Islands from the eve of the Catalan conquest to the Black Death, and the effect of the kingdom's creation and demise on the economy of the region. Links between the island and mainland territories, and as far afield as England and the Canaries, are analysed in depth.

Book Impacts of Tourism An assignment about the development of tourism in Majorca

Download or read book Impacts of Tourism An assignment about the development of tourism in Majorca written by Svenja Lis and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Thinking about tourism what first comes to most people’s minds probably has to do with sun, beaches, outdoor activities, shopping trips, exotic food and famous sights. Of course, all these components make a place a touristic destination and are going to be used by the tourists. Infrastructure is needed as well as certain adaptation of locals. If all necessary resources are given, what should argue against tourism as a motor of local economy and way of development? But on the other hand, a not successfully or towards sustainability directed management of a touristic destination may cause impacts destroying all these attractions irreparable. Even with all precautions against negative impacts taken, nothing can prevent a community from them. Is the average tourist aware of water being a rare resource, especially in the country of his or her vacations? Is the government of any country willing to restrict income and tax revenue provided by tourism to prevent nature from damage? And can anybody expect concerns about sustainability if a destination just started its rise in international tourism? By writing this assignment I am going to take a closer look on the impacts, which were caused by the development of tourism on the most famous Balearic Island, Majorca. The first chapter will deal with general information about the island, the second one will give an overview about the history of tourism and finally the third chapter will deviate possible and existing economical, social and environmental impacts of tourism on Majorca. Finally I will give a brief conclusion about Majorca as a destination impacted by tourism.

Book The Jews of Majorca

Download or read book The Jews of Majorca written by Abraham Lionel Isaacs and published by . This book was released on 1936 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys the history of the Jews in Majorca, focusing on the period after the Aragonese conquest in 1229. Under the reign of Sancho I of Aragón, the community leaders were imposed with a heavy fine and the great synagogue was confiscated as punishment for helping two German Christians convert to Judaism. In 1391 violent pogroms took place, and in 1413 the Jews were enclosed in a ghetto and restricted to certain professions. Forced conversion of the entire community took place in 1435. However, the Inquisition was suspicious of the New Christians, and persecutions and autos-da-fes took place through the 17th century. The Inquisitor Fransesc Garau was active in persecuting Majorca's Jews. Social discrimination against the Chuetas, (descendants of Conversos) continued until the end of the 19th century. Includes a list of documents.
