Book The History of Connecticut Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The History of Connecticut Vol 1 of 2 written by Gideon Hiram Hollister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Connecticut, Vol. 1 of 2: From the First Settlement of the Colony to the Adoption of the Present Constitution The task that I have undertaken is widely different. The following pages are not a record of the doings of a mighty nation, stretching over a continent; but rather of a people humble in their beginnings, unambitious in their aims; content with the moral grandeur that alone attends the discharge of their duty, and in silent unconsciousness building up a political structure more sublime in its beauty than the towered palaces of kings. I have often been inquired of if I could find material for a history of so small a state? My answer is, that I have found quite too much, and I have been more at a loss what I should be justified in leaving out, than how I should find interest ing matter to insert. I am much indebted to Dr. Trumbull, for going before me and gathering as he did whatever the most untiring diligence could glean from records, family papers, oral communications, and even traditions. But Trumbull did not touch upon the American revolution-that part of our history by far the most interesting to the people. From the close of the last French war, down to the adoption of our State Constitution, I have been obliged to shape my course without any general guide, but not without many local ones, who have pointed out the way to me for a little distance and then smilingly committed me to the care of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Connecticut, Vol. 2 of 2: From the First Settlement of the Colony to the Adoptions of the Present Constitution As this work was not commenced under the promptings of any desire to obtain money or win popularity, but from the mere love of the subject of which it treats, I have no occasion to solicit the indulgence of the public. Still the kindness of the legislature of the state, whose history I have attempted to illustrate, in making an appropriation to aid me in embellishing my work with portraits of some of her noblest sons, I can no more forget, than I can be unmind ful of the generosity and eloquence with which that appropriation was advocated by John Cotton Smith, Esquire, then a comparative stranger to me, and the assiduity with which he has aided the work in too many ways to be mentioned in a single paragraph.
