Book The History of Canadian Business Volume I

Download or read book The History of Canadian Business Volume I written by R Naylor and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1975-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive two-volume history of Canadian business is a detailed account of the development of commerce and industry in the formative period from Confederation to the First World War. Most of author Tom Naylor's information, gathered from contemporary sources and particularly the business press, is recorded here for the first time. This research has led him to offer a fundamental reinterpretaion of Canadian business and economic history which is bound to generate worldwide controversy. In Volume I on the banks and finance capital, the story of the growth of the Canadian chartered banking system is told in detail. Included is an analysis of the many bank failures, and an explanation of the techniques used successfully by the largest chartered banks to dominate banking and finance in the new confederation. Several chapters deal with hitherto unrecorded facets of the development of the financial system of Canada, the major financial institutions and the types of operations they financed. Volume II deals mainly with the development of manufacturing and industry. The rapid growth of foreign branch plants which followed the National Policy is examined in detail, as are business assistance measures like patent laws, tariffs, government subsidies and municipal 'bonusing'. Nayloroffers detailed accounts of the rise of big business through the formation of cartels and mergers assembled out of smaller independent operations. These two volumes offer a completely new perspective on the development of the Canadian economy. They cast important new light on the historical forces which lie behind many pressing currrent economic and political issues.

Book Decision Taking Confidence and Risk Management in Banks from Early Modernity to the 20th Century

Download or read book Decision Taking Confidence and Risk Management in Banks from Early Modernity to the 20th Century written by Korinna Schönhärl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers 14 contributions that examine key questions in bank decision-taking,constitution of confidence in banks and risk management practices from Early Modernity to the twentieth century. It explores how the various mechanisms of bank decision taking changed over time. Chapters also analyse the types of risk management techniques used, the contributory factors to the constitution of confidence and the methods that banking historians can use to analyse and describe bankers ́ risk management and decision taking - from system theory to behavioural finance, new institutional economics to praxeology and convention theory to network analysis. The different methodological approaches are put to the test in case studies based on archive material from four hundred years of banking in order to connect banking history more closely to political and cultural history.

Book Business Groups in the West

Download or read book Business Groups in the West written by Asli M. Colpan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to explore the long-term evolution of different varieties of large enterprises in today's developed economies. It focuses on the economic institution of business groups and attempts to comprehend the factors behind their rise, growth, struggle, and resilience; their behavioral and organizational characteristics; and their roles in national economic development. The volume seeks to enhance the scholarly and policy-oriented understanding of business groups in developed economies by bringing together state-of-the-art research on the characteristics and contributions of large enterprises in an evolutionary perspective. While business groups are a dominant and critical organization model in contemporary emerging economies and have lately attracted much attention in academic circles and business presses, their counterparts in developed economies have not been systematically examined. This book aims to fill this gap in the literature and is the first scholarly attempt to explore the evolutional paths and contemporary roles of business groups in developed economies from an internationally comparative perspective. In doing so, it argues that business groups actually rose to function as a critical factor of industrial dynamics in the context of Second Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth century. They have adapted their characteristic roles and transformed to fit to the changing market and institutional settings. As they flexibly co-evolve with the environment, the volume shows that business groups can remain as a viable organization model in the world's most advanced economies today.

Book Lessons from a Successfully Export Oriented Resource Rich Economy

Download or read book Lessons from a Successfully Export Oriented Resource Rich Economy written by Morris Altman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major theme of this book is that, contrary to what many experts believe, being endowed with a plenitude of natural resources is not a curse: rather it provides a potential advantage, if capitalized by the well-endowed economy. Much depends on the institutions that help frame the decision-making process that affects the process of growth and development. Canada is an example of a successful export-oriented economy. And, its export-orientation has been a focal point of discussion and debate, going way back to discussions of the early fur trade, the fishing industry, wheat farming, and mining and oil and gas exploration. Unlike other economies well-endowed with natural resources, Canada does not appear to be at all cursed, but rather blessed with natural resource abundance. This book, which ranges from the late seventeenth to the early twentieth century, provides insights from Canadian economic history on how such abundance can be a handmaiden of successful growth and development. From this perspective, the natural resource curse appears to be more of a ‘man-made’ phenomenon than anything else. This book also investigates aspects of gender inequality in Canada as well as the evolution of hours worked as it intersects with worker preferences and ‘market forces’. The narratives in this book are contextualised by the construction of new or significantly revised data sets, which speaks to the importance of data construction to robust economic analysis and economic history.

Book excerpt: From the 1870s until the Great Depression, immigration was often the question of the hour in Canada. Politicians, the media, and an array of interest groups viewed it as essential to nation building, developing the economy, and shaping Canada's social and cultural character. One of the groups most determined to influence public debate and government policy on the issue was organized labour, and unionists were often relentless critics of immigrant recruitment. Guarding the Gates is the first detailed study of Canadian labour leaders' approach to immigration, a key battleground in struggles between different political factions within the labour movement. This book provides new insights into labour, immigration, social, and political history.
