Download or read book The History and Ecology of Fire in Kejimkujik National Park written by Sean Basquill and published by [Halifax] : Parks Canada. This book was released on 2001 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study illustrates the significant role fire has played in the history of Kejimkujik National Park, one of the most fire-prone areas in the Acadian forest of Nova Scotia. Functional correlation between past fire occurrences and present-day forest ecology was determined using data drawn from a blending of both field & archival sources. The data were employed to determine the park's historic fire regime, to define the role of fire as a driving force in forest succession & retrogression, and to identify the park's signature pattern of post-fire forest communities & seral stages. The results reveal the significance of fire in sustaining the ecological integrity of the park and in providing a contextual framework for effective fire management. Appendices include lists of plant species found in the park, copies of forms used in the field studies, data on forest age structure & tree density, summaries of historical fire reports & archival data on fires in the park, information on fire scar physiognomy & sampling, and copies of available Parks Canada fire reports for the park, 1968-2000.

Download or read book Biodiversity Biosystematics and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera written by Christopher G Majka and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿThis volume includes fourteen research articles on Canadian Coleoptera, mainly on the families Staphylinidae, Leiodidae, Histeridae, Nitidulidae, Cucujidae, Phalacridae, Silvanidae, Laemophloeidae, Tetratomidae, several aquatic groups, and others. An introductory editorial traces the history of scientific research and indicates areas of future inquiry. The papers address various questions with respect to the distribution, dispersal, zoogeographical status, phenology, and bionomics of Canadian Coleoptera, the role of saproxylic beetles in forest ecosystems, and invasive species in native habitats. The answers to these questions have important economic and environmental consequences. The book is addressed to coleopterists, ecologists, biogeographers, and conservationists.

Download or read book Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems written by Donald F. Charles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidic deposition and its effect on aquatic ecosystems have become major scientific and public policy issues in the United States since the early 1970s, and many diverse studies have been completed. This book is the first comprehensive, integrated synthesis of available information on current and potential effects of acidic precipitation on lakes and streams in geographic regions with a high number of low-alkalinity surface water from the Adirondacks and the Southern Blue Ridge to the Upper Midwest to the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and the Cascades. Written by leading authors, the book examines the current status of water chemistry and characterizes the processes controlling water chemistry on a regional basis by using and comparing high-quality data sets. Methods for the assessment of long-term changes in water chemistry and their effects in fish and other biota are also presented. The book amply illustrates the substantial diversity among geographical regions with respect to the nature of surface waters and the complexity of their response to acidic deposition. This volume will be of great interest to researchers in limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental chemistry, hydrology, and atmospheric sciences. It will also serve as an important reference for environmental managers and policy makers.
