The Ebira can be found today in Okene, Adavi, Ajaokuta and Okehi Local Government Areas of present Kogi State in the North-Central geo-political zone of Nigeria on the other hand, the Owo people (of Ago Panu) are sub group of the Yoruba people of the South-western part of Nigeria. They can be found in Owo town, Ipele, Upremen, Usho, Ago-Panu (the focus of this work) and other surrounding towns and villages. In some Nigerian areas, the violent nature of the British conquest and early administration were enough to endanger social and economic disequilibrium that propelled migration from one area to another. This in effect was the situation with the Ebiras in the early part of colonial rule, a party of which migrated into the outlaying districts of Yorubaland.

However uncomfortable this might be, the genie of British cultural studies cannot be returned to the bottle of history. Thus, national versions of cultural studies have arisen in a few African countries. This book engages two critical and seemingly contradictory tasks: i) to contribute to the development of cultural studies from the perspectives of African experiences and indigenous frames of reference; and ii) to examine these in terms of transnational trajectories of the field in ways that do not reduce them to one or other context. Much cultural studies remains concerned with Texts, often disconnected from their contexts. For the authors published here, the contexts include African philosophies, cosmologies and ontologies. It includes the writings of both residential natives and those who have re-located to the diaspora, a spread that opens conversations with international approaches that both include and exclude African experiences and work. This anthology juxtaposes many different kinds of cultural studies done in different parts of the world as a means of creating a global dialogue around the signifier of ‘Africa’. In the ninth century Sallam the Interpreter dictated an account of his search for the barrier to the Arab geographer Ibn Khurradadhbih. The reliability of Sallam's journey from Samarra to Western China and back (842-45), however, has always been a highly contested issue. Van Donzel and Schmidt consider the travel account as historical. This volume presents a translation of the source while at the same time it carefully looks into other Eastern Christian and Muslim traditions of the famous lore. A comprehensive survey reconstructs the political and topographical data. As so many other examples, also this story pays witness to the influence of the Syriac Christian tradition on Koran and Muslim Traditions.
