This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of the Parish of Heminbrough in the County of York Mr. Burton, after gathering together what he could find at Durham and elsewhere, began to put his accumulations into form. It was his intention to publish them, and to dedicate the volume to the Surtees Society, which had done so much for Northern history. This dedication con stitutes the preface to one of his ms. Volumes, but it was abandoned, and the author yielded to the temptation of waiting for fresh matter. He was, in addition, very diffident as to his own powers, and was always making alterations in his mss. As new facts presented themselves to his notice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Priory and Peculiar of Snaith: In the County of York "Snaith is a Terra Incognita, in which yon will be a discoverer. It as well deserves to have a book to itself as do many others which have been thus treated." So wrote the historian of South Yorkshire, whose antiquarian sympathies are still with the North of England, and who, like Ralph Thoresby, never forgets to what County he belongs. My frequent reference to his works will in some measure express my obligation to Mr. Hunter. Indeed, it is only since the publication of Hallamshire, that topographers have learnt to treat separately of feudal interests and ecclesiastical affairs; and to avoid the fate of Dodsworth, and many others, who have gathered much, and printed little or nothing. Rarely does the ability to digest, and arrange, keep pace with the industry which is never weary of collecting. No one feels, so much as the Antiquary, the embarrassment of voluminous materials, and the temptation to insert extraneous matter which is in itself interesting. On this account it is, that many a grand topographical design has come to nothing. Mole sua ruit. The present seems a suitable moment for a popular account of those peculiar Courts, which are now all but extinct; although (Archaeologia xxv.360) "legal antiquities have never yet been found amongst those 'ways of hoar antiquity' which are 'strewn with flowers;' and even the most skilful, with the exception of Judge Blackstone, have failed in making them objects of general attention." Book Interpreting Medieval Effigies

Download or read book Interpreting Medieval Effigies written by Brian Gittos and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study examines and analyses the wealth of evidence provided by the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including some of very high sculptural merit. More than 200 examples survive from the historic county in varying states of preservation. Together, they present a picture of the people able to afford them, at a time when the county was frequently at the forefront of national politics and administration, during the Scottish wars. Many monuments display remarkable realism, depicting people as they themselves wished to be remembered, and are accompanied by a great volume of contemporary sculptural and architectural detail. Stylistic analysis of the effigies themselves has been employed, better to understand how they relate to one another and give a firmer basis for their dating and production patterns. They are considered in relation to the history and material culture of the area at the time they were produced. A more soundly based appreciation of the sculptor's intentions and the aspirations of patrons is sought through close attention to the full extent of the visible evidence afforded by the monuments and their surroundings. The corpus is of sufficient size to permit meaningful analysis to shed light on aspects such as personal aspiration, social networks, patterns of supply and production, piety and wealth. It demonstrates the value of funerary monuments to the wider understanding of medieval society. The text will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue, making available a substantial body of research for the first time. The study considers the relationship between the monuments and related sculpture, architecture, painting, glass etc, together with contemporary documentary evidence, where it is available. This material and the underlying methodology are now available to illuminate monuments of the medieval period across the whole country. Its methods and messages extend understanding of all monuments, broadening its potential audience from the purely local to everyone concerned with medieval sculpture and church archaeology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boydell & Brewer are pleased to announce that as from 1 December 2001 they will be distributing the Victoria County History, which has an international reputation as a work of reference for English local history. Begun in 1899, the publication of about three new volumes each year is gradually creating an encyclopedic history of the counties, ranging from earliest times to the present. For each county there is or is planned a set of volumes, containing general chapters on subjects such as prehistory and ecclesiastical and economic history, and topographical chapters giving a comprehensive, fully referenced account of each city, town and village in the county. Fourteen county sets have been completed; work is in progress on a further thirteen.
