Book Ancient Rome and the Construction of Modern Homosexual Identities

Download or read book Ancient Rome and the Construction of Modern Homosexual Identities written by Jennifer Ingleheart and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the contribution of ancient Greece to modern discourses of homosexuality, but Rome's significant rôle has been largely overlooked. Ancient Rome and the Construction of Modern Homosexual Identities explores the contested history of responses to Roman antiquity, covering areas such as literature, the visual arts, popular culture, scholarship, and pornography. Essays by scholars working across a number of disciplines analyse the demonization of Rome and attempts to write it out of the history of homosexuality by early activists such as John Addington Symonds, who believed that Rome had corrupted ideal (and idealized) 'Greek love' through its decadence and sexual licentiousness. The volume's contributors also investigate the identification with Rome by men and women who have sought an alternative ancestry for their desires. The volume asks what it means to look to Rome instead of Greece, theorizes the way in which Rome itself appropriates Greece, and explores the consequences of such appropriations and identifications, both ancient and modern. From learned discussions of lesbian cunnilingus in Renaissance commentaries on Martial and Juvenal, to disgust at the sexual excesses of the emperors, to the use of Rome by the early sexologists, to modern pornographic films that linger on the bodies of gladiators and slaves, Rome has been central to homosexual desires and experiences. By interrogating the desires that create engagements with the classical past, the volume illuminates both classical reception and the history of sexuality.

Book The Cannibal Hymn

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Eyre
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2002-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780853237068
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book The Cannibal Hymn written by Christopher Eyre and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cannibal Hymn forms a self-standing episode in the ritual anthology that makes up the Pyramid Texts, first appearing in the tomb of Unas at the end of the Fifth Dynasty. Its style and format are characteristic of the oral-recitational poetry of pharaonic Egypt, marked by allusive metaphor and the exploitation of wordplay and homophony in its verbal recreation of a butchery ritual. Christopher Eyre examines the text of the Cannibal Hymn in its performative and cultural context: the detailed mythologization of the sacrificial process in this hymn poses key questions about the nature of rites of passage and rituals of sacrifice in Egypt, and in particular about the mobilization of oral accompaniment to ritual actions.

Book Classics Transformed

Download or read book Classics Transformed written by Christopher Stray and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to give a general account of the transformation of classics in English schools and universities from being the amateur knowledge of the Victorian gentleman to that of the professional scholar, from an elite social marker to a marginalized academic subject. The challenges to the authority of classics in 19th-century England are analysed, as is the wide range of ideological responses by its practitioners. The impact of university reform on the content and organization of classical knowledge is described in detail, with special reference to Cambridge. Chapters are devoted to the effects of state intervention, social snobbery and democracy on the provision of classics in schools, and the dissensions within the bodies set up to defend it. The narrative is carried through to the abolition of Compulsory Latin in 1960 and the absence of classics from the National Curriculum in 1988.

Book Classics and National Cultures

Download or read book Classics and National Cultures written by Susan A. Stephens and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The texts, ideas, images, and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome have always been crucial to attempts to appropriate the past in order to authenticate the present. They underlie the mapping of change and the assertion and challenging of values and identities, old and new. Classical Presences brings the latest scholarship to bear on the contexts, theory, and practice of such use, and abuse, of the classical past. --
