Download or read book Chicago by Day and Night written by Paul Durica and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcasing the first Ferris wheel, dazzling and unprecedented electrification, and exhibits from around the world, the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was Chicago’s chance to demonstrate that it had risen from the ashes of the Great Fire and was about to take its place as one of the world’s great cities. Millions would flock to the fair, and many of them were looking for a good time before and after their visits to the Midway and the White City. But what was the bedazzled visitor to do in Chicago? Chicago by Day and Night: The Pleasure Seeker’s Guide to the Paris of America, a very unofficial guide to the world beyond the fair, slaked the thirst of such curious folk. The pleasures it details range from the respectable (theater, architecture, parks, churches and synagogues) to the illicit—drink, gambling, and sex. With a wink and a nod, the book decries vice while offering precise directions for the indulgence of any desire. In this newly annotated edition, Chicagoans Paul Durica and Bill Savage—who, if born earlier, might have written chapters in the original—provide colorful context and an informative introduction to a wildly entertaining journey through the Chicago of 120 years ago.

Download or read book Authentic Visitors Guide to the World s Columbian Exposition and Chicago written by Richard J. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Authentic Visitors' Guide to the World's Columbian Exposition and Chicago: May 1 to October 30, 1893; Dedicatory Ceremonies, October 20, 21, 22, 1892; Condensed Information Compiled From Official Sources To intelligently view the many miles of exhibit frontage at the Exposition will require at least a month. A treatise of five hundred pages might be prepared without exhausting this subject; so voluminous a work, however, would be as vague and fruitless to the visitor as would be an attempt to take in the vast display in a few hours. The purpose of the Authentic Visitors' Guide is to furnish, in brief and attractive form, all information required by the stranger relating to the Exposition and the city of Chicago. The maps in this compilation are permanent and accurate, and must prove an indispensable aid to every one unacquainted with Chicago's streets and railway systems. The classified index to 1,000 subjects, on pages 60 to 67, aids in the prompt location of all exhibits. It indicates the group number and the building in which the desired object may be found. This system of classification has been arranged exclusively for the Authentic Visitors' Guide, and is copyrighted. Book The World s Columbian Exposition

Download or read book The World s Columbian Exposition written by David J. Bertuca and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition had a profound impact on urban planning and the Beaux-Arts period of American architecture. The fair introduced the Ferris Wheel, Cracker Jacks, and fiberglass. Yet today, except for one building and a grassy park, all that remains is the legacy of printed material dispersed throughout the country. This reference guide, intended for historians, librarians, and collectors, provides access to that legacy. The introduction summarizes the Exposition's influence. The bibliography, arranged to allow researchers to browse topics broadly, describes over 6,000 books, journal articles, and other materials. A directory of special collections of fair-related materials is also included. Newspaper and magazine articles, books, dissertations, drawings, photographs, maps, letters, documents, and collections of memorabilia—these provide the enduring heritage of the fair. This guide provides information on all aspects of that heritage. In addition to the bibilography itself, an extensive introduction discusses the influence the fair has had on America. Illustrations provide a visual portrayal of the fair. A directory of special collections of fair-related materials provides an inventory of each collection, along with addresses and telephone numbers. This book is the only comprehensive reference guide to the World's Columbian Exposition.

Book Chicago s 1893 World s Fair

Download or read book Chicago s 1893 World s Fair written by Joseph M. Di Cola and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What came to be known as the World s Columbian Exposition was planned to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus s 1492 landfall in the New World. Chicago beat out New York City, St. Louis, Missouri, and Washington, DC, in its bid as host a coup for the Windy City. The site finally selected for the fair was Jackson Park, originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, a marshy area covered with dense, wild vegetation. Daniel H. Burnham and John W. Root were selected as chief architects, creating the famous White City. The fair featured several different thematic areas: the Great Buildings, Foreign Buildings, State Buildings, and the Midway Plaisance, a nearly mile-long area that featured exotic exhibits. The exposition also showcased the world s first Ferris Wheel and introduced fairgoers to new sensations like Cracker Jack, Pabst Beer, and ragtime music. The World s Columbian Exposition, covering 633 acres, opened on May 1, 1893. Admission prices were 50cents for adults, 25cents for children under 12 years of age, and free for children under six. Unfortunately, by 1896, most of the fair s buildings had been removed or destroyed, but this collection takes readers on a tour of the grounds as they looked in 1893."

This is particularly true in Chicagoland, a region that spans over 4,400 square miles and is home to more than 9.5 million residents.
