Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perched among peaks that loom over heat-shimmering plains, hill stations remain among the most curious monuments to the British colonial presence in India. In this engaging and meticulously researched study, Dane Kennedy explores the development and history of the hill stations of the raj. He shows that these cloud-enshrouded havens were sites of both refuge and surveillance for British expatriates: sanctuaries from the harsh climate as well as an alien culture; artificial environments where colonial rulers could nurture, educate, and reproduce themselves; commanding heights from which orders could be issued with an Olympian authority. Kennedy charts the symbolic and sociopolitical functions of the hill stations over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, arguing that these highland communities became much more significant to the British colonial government than mere places for rest and play. Particularly after the revolt of 1857, they became headquarters for colonial political and military authorities. In addition, the hill stations provided employment to countless Indians who worked as porters, merchants, government clerks, domestics, and carpenters. The isolation of British authorities at the hill stations reflected the paradoxical character of the British raj itself, Kennedy argues. While attempting to control its subjects, it remained aloof from Indian society. Ironically, as more Indians were drawn to these mountain areas for work, and later for vacation, the carefully guarded boundaries between the British and their subjects eroded. Kennedy argues that after the turn of the century, the hill stations were increasingly incorporated into the landscape of Indian social and cultural life. Book Reflections

Download or read book Reflections written by S Mohan Rao and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it fair to compare the lifestyle and choices of the current generation with that of the older generation? Should we seek specific, quantified results in our daily life or just aim to seek quality and happiness in all that we do? Can a blind practice, miscued as devotion, overrule discipline? Get insights into all these and more in this delightful account of Mohan Rao’s journey of self-discovery and learning. Reflections is an inspiring tale of the evolution of an ordinary man. The book is a purposeful recollection of the various turning points in Rao’s life and the people who left a lasting impression on him. Particularly interesting are Rao’s travel tales across the world and his brush with bureaucracy. Replete with interesting anecdotes, everlasting memories and powerful words of wisdom, Reflections makes you pause and ponder over the wonder that is life. "…quite reminiscent of the style and pace of the 'Malgudi Days.' Small incidents strung together without a plot into a nice story." -Mohan Sundaram, Vice President- The Association of People with Disability. “Reflections by S Mohan Rao is a book which captures a life lived with integrity, with purpose and with caring. In effect, a life lived well. Through his journey, Mohan also records the learnings from his work and personal experiences. These are useful for many who traverse life’s journey as they will also encounter similar challenges, opportunities and dilemmas. My favourite lines from Reflections are “Don’t we meet God everywhere, all the time? In the face of an innocent child, in nature, and in our parents’ benevolent nature, as they give everything to their loved ones with no expectations?” This positive attitude of looking for the best in our fellow humans and in our surroundings shines through in Mohan’s Reflections" -Ashok Soota | Executive Chairman |Happiest Minds Technologies.

Book Hill Railways of the Indian Subcontinent

Download or read book Hill Railways of the Indian Subcontinent written by Richard Wallace and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes seven branch lines which climbed into the mountain ranges that span the length and breadth of the countries of India and Pakistan. Some - like the Darjeeling Himalayan - are well known, but others - like the Zhob Valley, Khyber Pass and Kangra Valley lines - are less so. Several of these railways were also the last bastions of steam operation in the sub-continent. Unsurprisingly, as hill railways, most of them reached remarkable heights, many using ingenious feats of engineering to assist their climb into seemingly impenetrable terrain. These lines served diverse locations, each with its own characteristics, from the hostile territories of the North-West Frontier, along the spectacular foothills of the Himalayas, skirting the Western Ghats of the Deccan down to the gentle rolling landscape of the Nilgiris, or Blue Hills, of South India. The book gives the histories of the seven hill railways including summaries of their operations and routes. Maps and gradient charts for all seven railway lines are given as well as listings of the locomotives operating the hill railways.

Book Tweeting in Tuk Tuks Digital Enlightenment in India

Download or read book Tweeting in Tuk Tuks Digital Enlightenment in India written by Stefan Mey and published by Babelcube Inc.. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a man who came to India to work and then found very different, unusual things there. The book is written in the form of short exerpts in the social media age known as the 21st century. We hear the Om but don't recognise it; somewhere beside a pooing cow, a middle-class Indian is busy checking in with Foursquare while self-discovery tourists are searching for salvation. People are tweeting everywhere. This is a story of social media self-discovery - probably the first in the entire known universe. It took shape during travel, while all sorts of things were constantly happening around the author; while he was actually trying to land an important deal in India - or maybe not? India has never been so digital, but at the same time nor so colourful or so real. This book tells us why the aspiring country can still confuse us, even in the age of Facebook. It's a must-have for anyone who's had enough of traditional self-discovery literature.
