Book excerpt: The title page notes that this history has been approved as an Official Record by the Committee of Imperial Defence (Historical Section, Military Branch) and that adds to the pedigree of what is undoubtedly a very good battalion history. The Battalion was raised in Glasgow on 2nd September 1914 as the 2nd Glasgow by the Lord Provost and City with many recruits from the Glasgow Boys Brigade. In May 1915 the Battalion moved to Prees Heath, in Shropshire, where it joined the 97th Brigade of the 32nd Division and sailed for France in November 1915. It served with that brigade on the Somme, on the Ancre and on the Flanders coast. In February 1918 it became the divisional Pioneer Battalion. There is useful information in the appendices: the Roll of Honour (36 officers and 795 dead), Honours and Awards, roll of officers and of other ranks who embarked for France with the Battalion on 23rd November 1915, and a list of officers who served with the Battalion overseas (135). This history is based on the contributions of many who served with the Battalion and the editor has drawn them together to provide a stirring account. The battalion suffered grievously during the first day of the Somme when the 32nd Division attacked Thiepval, and when 16th HLI came out of the line on the evening of July 3rd its casualties totalled 20 officers and 534 other ranks. The chapter describing this is titled The Shambles of the Somme. And they were there again at the final battle at the Ancre in November when their casualties amounted to 13 officers and 390 other ranks. The 16th HLI was with the Army of Occupation. It was a good battalion and this history does them credit.

For the purpose of this study, the term conventional infantry refers to modern-day motorized and mechanized infantry and to the large dismounted infantry forces typical of the standard infantry divisions of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The study concludes that light infantry is unique and distinct. A light infantry ethic exits and manifests itself in a distinctive tactical style, in a special attitude toward the environment, in a freedom from dependence on fixed lines of communication, and in a strong propensity for self-reliance. The book will illustrate the cap and shoulder titles used, as well as cloth signs worn to provide easy recognition in the trenches. Each regular and reserve battalion of a regiment has a listing, which provides a brief history of the unit and detailed information on the badges worn. It is prodigiously illustrated and contains much information, like why a shape or color was chosen, when it was adopted, what size it was, whether it was worn on a helmet, what color the helmet was and even what colors were used on horse transport; the majority of this rich and detailed information has never been published before. What helps make the information accurate and authoritative is that much of it comes from an archive created at the time and from personal correspondence with hundreds of veterans in the 1980s, many of whom still had their badges and often had razor-sharp recollections about wearing them. The book also provides some comments from these veterans. Using the illustrations will allow many of those unidentified photos in family albums to come to life.

When the Japanese invaded Malaya in December 1941, the Battalion fought bravely until the surrender of Singapore on 14 February 1942. Those who were not killed became POWs. Of the 1000 men involved initially, over 400 had died by their liberation in summer 1945. Despite the diverse background of the members of the Battalion, all were bound by close regimental spirit. As POWs, all suffered hard labour, starvation, brutality and tropical diseases. Rank was no protection from death. After initial incarceration in Singapore the Gordons were dispersed to work on the famous Thai-Burma railway, in the mines of Taiwan and Japan and on other slave labour projects. Conditions defy modern comprehension. Others died trapped in hell-ships torpedoed by allied submarines. The author has researched the plight of these extraordinary men, so many of whom never saw their native Scotland again. Despite the grim conditions, he captures the strong collective regimental spirit and the humour and cooperation that saved so many who would have otherwise have perished à as many did. This is an inspiring tale of courage and survival against appalling odds.
