Book High Cost of Free Parking

Download or read book High Cost of Free Parking written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off-street parking requirements are devastating American cities. So says the author in this no-holds-barred treatise on the way parking should be. Free parking, the author argues, has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion, but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. The author proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking, namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking.

Book The High Cost of Low Prices

Download or read book The High Cost of Low Prices written by David Steven Jacoby and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book directly addresses controversial issues like climate change, carbon taxes, fracking, offshoring, urban sprawl, globalization, income inequality, regulation, corruption, compliance and enforcement, providing an informed basis for mapping the way forward. Based on his experience consulting on hundreds of industrial mega-projects, Jacoby reveals dark secrets of international supply chains for familiar products such as coffee, bottled water, gasoline, and electronic devices, and explains how government policies and business norms around the world have evolved to allow practices that can deplete natural resources, blight native landscapes, and tolerate inhumane working conditions. Rich in facts and deep with first-hand experiences from around the world, Jacoby challenges embedded thinking about growth and progress, convenience, comfort, and quality of life. The book proposes a bold and realistic new policy framework that is ground-breaking and achievable for industry, government, and consumers, and supports the plan with achievable metrics, targets, and accountabilities. While his first book promoted global supply chain optimization based on industry “best practices” and his second book fine-tuned the techniques for oil, gas, and power companies, Jacoby takes a holistic perspective in this third book, acknowledging and proposing solutions for the problems caused in part by these “optimized” global supply chains.

Download or read book Poland written by Gordon Hughes and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The prospect of joining the European Union defines much of Poland's current policy agenda. The political and economic consensus in favor of joining the EU as quickly as possible is very strong, and indeed, most of the adjustments required are likely to be in Poland's immediate interest. However, the changes required to comply with EU directives in the environment sector involve sustained high levels of investment and significant uncertainty about the timing and nature of the associated benefits."The European Commission's Opinion on Poland's application for EU membership acknowledges the severity of the environmental problems in Poland and comments on the challenges the country will have to face, especially in the areas of wastewater treatment and air pollution. The Opinion concludes that while full transposition of the environmental acquis in Poland could be expected in the medium term, effective compliance with a number of pieces of legislation would require sustained high levels of investment and considerable administrative effort. Full compliance in areas such as drinking water and certain aspects of waste management could be achieved only in the long term and will necessitate increased levels of public and private investment. This paper aims to address some of the issues involved in planning compliance with EU environmental directives. The paper has three principal objectives: • Highlight major issues that Poland is likely to face in implementing the requirements; • Estimate the total costs of compliance for the public sector in certain key sectors, and outline possible options for reducing those costs; and • Assess where the burden of those costs is likely to fall, and the options for financing the investments.

Book The High Cost of Free Parking

Download or read book The High Cost of Free Parking written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 1065 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the American Planning Association’s most popular and influential books is finally in paperback, with a new preface from the author on how thinking about parking has changed since this book was first published. In this no-holds-barred treatise, Donald Shoup argues that free parking has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. Shoup proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking – namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking. Such measures, according to the Yale-trained economist and UCLA planning professor, will make parking easier and driving less necessary. Join the swelling ranks of Shoupistas by picking up this book today. You'll never look at a parking spot the same way again.
