Book Higgs Puzzle The What Can We Learn From Lep2 Lhc Nlc And Fmc Proceedings Of The 1996 Ringberg Workshop

Download or read book Higgs Puzzle The What Can We Learn From Lep2 Lhc Nlc And Fmc Proceedings Of The 1996 Ringberg Workshop written by Bernd A Kniehl and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-07-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the great success of the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions to describe the phenomena observed in high energy physics experiments, the mechanism by which the elementary particles are endowed with their masses is yet to be unraveled. Does nature choose the Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking as predicted by the standard model, or do we need some alternative explanation? The purpose of the workshop is to capture new trends and ideas in this exciting area of fundamental physics, and to explore the potential of recent (LEPI), present (HERA, LEPII, SLC, Tevatron), and future (FMC, LHC, NLC) colliding-beam experiments to shed light on the Higgs puzzle.

Book Radiative Corrections Radcor 98 Application Of Quantum Field Theory To Phenomenology Proceedings Of 4th

Download or read book Radiative Corrections Radcor 98 Application Of Quantum Field Theory To Phenomenology Proceedings Of 4th written by Joan Sola and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-09-17 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the contributions of 47 leading researchers in high energy physics, both theorists and experimentalists, from all over the world. It discusses the application of quantum field theory to phenomenology in all areas of active research in particle physics. The topics covered include: (i) the status of precision measurements at LEP, SLC, HERA, Tevatron, and other experiments; (ii) quantum-field-theoretical techniques for calculating electroweak and QCD radiative corrections; and (iii) radiative corrections and precision experiments in future colliders (Tevatron II, LHC, NLC, Muon Collider, etc.). The confrontation in a single volume of all the high precision results reported by experimentalists, on one side, with the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) at the level of radiative corrections, on the otherside, provides a detailed test of the SM at the quantum level. And, where discrepancies appear, it gives hints of physics beyond the SM (such as supersymmetry, effective quantum field theories, etc.) which are thoroughly discussed in the book.

Book Applied Asymptotic Expansions in Momenta and Masses

Download or read book Applied Asymptotic Expansions in Momenta and Masses written by Vladimir A. Smirnov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The sturgeon they sent was second grade fresh,' said the barman. 'Really, what nonsense/' 'Why nonsense?' '"Second grade fresh" that's what I call nonsense/ There's only one degree of freshness the first, and it's the last) (M. A. Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita) The goal of this book is to describe in detail how Feynman integrals can be expanded in suitable parameters, when various momenta or masses are small or large. In a narrow sense, this problem is connected with practical calcula tions. In a situation where a given Feynman integral depends on parameters of very different scales, a natural idea is to replace it by a sufficiently large number of terms of an expansion of it in ratios of small and large scales. It will be explained how this problem of expansion can be systematically solved, by formulating universal prescriptions that express terms of the expansion by using the original Feynman integral with its integrand expanded into a Taylor series in appropriate momenta and masses. It turns out that knowledge of the structure of the asymptotic expansion at the diagrammatic level is a key point in understanding how to perform expansions at the operator level. There are various examples of these ex pansions: the operator product expansion, the large mass expansion, Heavy Quark Effective Theory, Non Relativistic QCD, etc. Each of them serves as a realization of the factorization of contributions of different scales.

Book The Standard Theory of Particle Physics

Book Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking

Download or read book Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking written by Edward Farhi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of original papers on dynamical gauge symmetry breaking, and is intended for graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics (elementary particle physics and others) who have an understanding of basic quantum field theory. The book can serve as a research text for those requiring an introduction to dynamical gauge symmetry breaking and as a reference text for active researchers. The important papers in the field that are included deal with attempts to apply the ideas to realistic models of elementary particle interactions. A historical critique by the editors provides an introductory review.

Book Principles Of Phase Structures In Particle Physics

Download or read book Principles Of Phase Structures In Particle Physics written by Hildegard Meyer-ortmanns and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-12-06 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phase structure of particle physics shows up in matter at extremely high densities and/or temperatures as they were reached in the early universe, shortly after the big bang, or in heavy-ion collisions, as they are performed nowadays in laboratory experiments. In contrast to phase transitions of condensed matter physics, the underlying fundamental theories are better known than their macroscopic manifestations in phase transitions. These theories are quantum chromodynamics for the strong interaction part and the electroweak part of the Standard Model for the electroweak interaction. It is their non-Abelian gauge structure that makes it a big challenge to predict the type of phase conversion between phases of different symmetries and different particle contents. The book is about a variety of analytical and numerical tools that are needed to study the phase structure of particle physics. To these belong convergent and asymptotic expansions in strong and weak couplings, dimensional reduction, renormalization group studies, gap equations, Monte Carlo simulations with and without fermions, finite-size and finite-mass scaling analyses, and the approach of effective actions as supplement to first-principle calculations.

Book Gut Symmetries

  • Author : Jeanette Winterson
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 0307763633
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Gut Symmetries written by Jeanette Winterson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highwire artist of the English novel redraws the romantic triangle for the post-Einsteinian universe, where gender is as elastic as matter, and any accurate Grand Unified Theory (GUT) must encompass desire alongside electromagnetism and gravity. One starry night on a boat in the mid-Atlantic, Alice, a brilliant English theoretical physicist, begins an affair with Jove, her remorselessly seductive American counterpart. But Jove is married. When Alice confronts his wife, Stella, she swiftly falls in love with her, with consequences that are by turns horrifying, comic, and arousing. Vaulting from Liverpool to New York, from alchemy to string theory, and from the spirit to the flesh, Gut Symmetries is a thrillingly original novel by England's most flamboyantly gifted young writer. "Winterson is unmatched among contemporary writers in her ability to conjure up new-world wonder...A beautiful, stirring and brilliant story."--Times Literary Supplement "Dazzling for [its] intelligence and inventiveness...[Winterson] is possessed of a masterly command of the language and a truly pliant imagination."--Elle "One of our most brilliant, visionary storytellers."--San Francisco Chronicle
