Book Lawrence County History Trivia

Download or read book Lawrence County History Trivia written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-24 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawrence County History Trivia is a collection of fascinating historic facts, fun, and folklore from Lawrence County, Tennessee. It tells the interesting and little-known details of the area's past, from the county's early days, when David Crockett won his first election there out of spite, to the turbulent days of the Civil War when the county produced thousands of brave soldiers for both sides and at least one Confederate spy, to the early 20th century when goats slept in the county courthouse at night, to the modern era, when Lawrence County became home to one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the South. The history of Lawrence County is a microcosm of the history of America. From the time of the Chickasaw Cession to the arrival of the Amish in 1944, each successive wave of settlers has left its own cultural mark on the county, and each has done its part to make the area the unique place that it is today. Used as a hunting ground for generations of native people, first settled by rugged pioneers and by men who fought in the American Revolution, caught up in the fever of Manifest Destiny, divided and damaged by civil war, reinvigorated by a wave of German immigrants, galvanized by the progressive era, modernized by two world wars, and industrialized by the bicycle industry, the Lawrence County experience has been the American experience, and this book explains it all with little-known facts from each era.

Book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996

Download or read book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996 written by W. Calvin Dickinson and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 6,000 entries, A Bibliography of Tennessee History will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone--students, historians, librarians, genealogists--engaged in researching Tennessee's rich and colorful past. A sequel to Sam B. Smith's invaluable 1973 work, Tennessee History: A Bibliography, this book follows a similar format and includes published books and essays, as well as many unpublished theses and dissertations, that have become available during the intervening years. The volume begins with sections on Reference, Natural History, and Native Americans. Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Sections on Literature and County Histories round out the book. Included is a helpful subject index that points the reader to particular persons, places, incidents, or topics. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. The history of entertainment in Tennessee is also well represented in this volume, including, for example, hundreds of citations for writings about Elvis Presley and for works that treat Nashville and Memphis as major show business centers. The Literature section, meanwhile, includes citations for fiction and poetry relating to Tennessee history as well as for critical works about Tennessee writers. Throughout, the editors have strived to achieve a balance between comprehensive coverage and the need to be selective. The result is a volume that will benefit researchers for years to come. The Editors: W. Calvin Dickinson is professor of history at Tennessee Technological University. Eloise R. Hitchcock is head reference librarian at the University of the South.

Book The Confederate Army A Regiment An Analysis Of The Forty Eighth Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment 1861 1865

Download or read book The Confederate Army A Regiment An Analysis Of The Forty Eighth Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment 1861 1865 written by Major Kincaid Gerald and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of an army is often evaluated by its achievements as a whole, or by that of its commanders or perhaps even its divisions. Often lost in the equation is the small unit. After the great plans are complete and the logistics preparations are accomplished, it is the collective performance of the small unit that ultimately decides the battle. This thesis analyses the campaigns, soldiers, organization, equipment, and performance of just one regiment: the 48th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. Material concerning the 48th includes numerous primary sources: the Official Records, Confederate Veteran, The Southern Historical Papers, Southern Bivouac, local histories, and the CARL microfiche library of unit histories (Note: the 48th is not included in these unit histories). Other primary references include war diaries of two officers, three enlisted men, and copies of the 48th's Quartermaster records. This thesis concludes that, while training and equipment of the 48th was sometimes poor, it was effective in numerous engagements, despite its relative small size. The ultimate demise of the unit was due to personnel losses.
