Book excerpt: Average height of the free population in the United States born in the mid-1830s began to decline despite growing per capita incomes. Explanations for this antebellum puzzle revolve around a possibly deteriorating disease environment promoted by urban agglomeration and increases in the relative price of protein-rich foods. However, several groups were immune to the effect, including members of the middle class, whose income was high enough, and increased enough to overcome the adverse developments and maintain their nutritional status. Although at the opposite end of the social spectrum, the height of male slaves also increased, as it was in their owners' interest to raise their slaves' food allotments. The height of Tennessee convicts, analyzed in this article, also increased in the late-1830s, being the third exception to the antebellum puzzle. Mid-19th century Tennessee was integrated into interstate commerce in cotton and tobacco and experienced considerable movement of people who would have brought with them diseases from elsewhere, hence, it would have been integrated into the US disease pool, and the fact that heights did not decline in the 1830s is therefore an indication that the antebellum puzzle cannot be explained exclusively by the spread of diseases. Yet, Tennessee's economy was quite different to that of the rest of the country. Although it did export live swine to the South, these exports did not increase during the antebellum decades. Hence, Tennessee remained self-sufficient in pork, and consumption of pork did not decline. Thus, the evidence presented here is consistent with the economic interpretation of the antebellum puzzle: self-sufficiency in protein production protected even the members of the lower-classes of Tennessee from the negative externalities associated with the onset of industrialization.

In their path-breaking examination of the impact of population growth and parasitic diseases, they contend that interpretations of history that minimize or ignore the physical environment are incomplete or wrong. The authors emphasize the paradoxical impact of population growth and density on progress. An increased population leads to increased market size, specialization, productivity, and living standards. Simultaneously, increased population density can provide an ecological niche for pathogens and parasites that prey upon humanity, increasing morbidity and mortality. The tension between diseases and progress continues, with progress dominant since the late 1800s. Integral to their story are the differential effects of diseases on different ethnic (racial) groups. McGuire and Coelho show that the Europeanization of the Americas, for example, was caused by Old World diseases unwittingly brought to the New World, not by superior technology and weaponry. The decimation of Native Americans by pathogens vastly exceeded that caused by war and human predation. The authors combine biological and economic analyses to explain the concentration of African slaves in the American South. African labor was more profitable in the South because Africans' evolutionary heritage enabled them to resist the diseases that became established there; conversely, Africans' ancestral heritage made them susceptible to northern “cold-weather” diseases. European disease resistance and susceptibilities were the opposite regionally. Differential regional disease ecologies thus led to a heritage of racial slavery and racism.

This second volume of Tennessee Convicts includes records of more than 3,000 inmates in the Tennessee State Penitentiary from 1850 through 1870. During this period the prison saw many changes, most notably the influx of military prisoners during the Civil War and a dramatic increase in African-American incarcerations in the years after the war. These records are excellent resources for the historian and genealogist. Despite their surface uniformity, these entries speak volumes about the history of the period. The fact that nearly every prisoner was pardoned by Reconstruction Governor William G. Brownlow, including, for example, Ned Dow, a "colored" prisoner from Weakley County convicted of rape in 1866, explains in part why Browniow was so despised by the former Confederates of the state. The imprisonment of Confederate guerillas such as Lincoln County physician John Woods, and of disobedient Union soldiers like William Conklin of the l0th Ohio, reflects the difficulties of the times. Prison officials rarely entered personal comments into the record, but occasionally appear to have been compelled to put their opinions on paper. For example, the entry describing R.H. Treadway, a printer convicted of petit larceny, includes this note: "Carried to this end like a great many others from a life of dissipation, visiting houses of ill fame and other similar places (groceries, gambling, saloons)." The larcenous habits of James Tilton earned him this remark: "Fifth sentence, and should he live he may come the sixth time.... He is naturally prone to steal." Most of this information was abstracted from ledgers 86 and 87 of the Tennessee State Penitentiary records (Record Group 25) at the State Library and Archives in Nashville. Volume 87 is arranged in a tabular format, giving basic information about each prisoner including name, age, place of birth, date received, county from which committed, crime, sentence, and discharge information. Volume 86 is in freehand and, although repeating much of the same information, also often includes notes about the prisoner's family and a physical description (the latter not included in this abstract). Because these manuscript records begin to be very sketchy during the Civil War period and contain many gaps thereafter, the published reports of the Penitentiary which were submitted to the Tennessee General Assembly were culled for information about prisoners from 1865-1870. The amount of detail about each prisoner provided in these published reports varies from year to year, but in general resembles that found in ledger 87. These reports may all be found at the Library and Archives, bound with the House and Senate Journals. Underlining has been added to confirm peculiar spellings, and [brackets] indicate text supplied by the transcriber, with question marks added where the original was unclear.

Book excerpt: The records of the Tennessee State Penitentiary can be viewed in two ways. A casual approach reveals a body of historical records of fascinating and valuable detail. But on closer reflection, the misery and evil reflected in the records will send a chill down the spine of the imaginative reader. Most people shrink from thinking much about prisons. But the process of dealing with crime and criminals in 19th-century Tennessee resulted in the creation of a huge body of records. They range from the minutes and case files of the local courts to the records of gubernatorial pardons. For both the historian and the genealogist, these records are well worth investigating. The purpose of this book is to provide both historical and genealogical information based on the earliest records of the Tennessee State Penitentiary. The impetus for the work came from the discovery of several ledgers maintained by the Keeper of the Penitentiary, who kept a careful record of each prisoner. These records, housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives, provide fascinating glimpses into the identities of the inmates of the Penitentiary during its first two decades. The world these records represent can never be completely understood by modern minds, but a study of the laws providing for punishment and of the rules and procedures of the Penitentiary helps shed some light on them. Over 3,000 entries through 1850 with crimes listed from petty theft to murder, and include personal details of convicts (also family/birth information), when available. Following is a typical entry for most convicts: Name: James W. Grey, age 50, born in Tennessee, occupation: farmer. Convicted of fellony [sic] by a court in Knox County, and sentenced to 3 years in the Penitentiary. Received July 24, 1839 and discharged July 14, 1842. Notes: pardoned by Gov. Jones, Number in ledger 86: 409.
