Download or read book House of Fun The Story of Madness written by John Reed and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2014-08-30 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madness were true originals who mixed ska and reggae rhythms with social comment and music hall humour to become a British group like no other. They were the most successful UK singles band of the 80s, offering a larky down-to-earth take on Thatcher’s Britain through hits like ‘My Girl’, ‘One Step Beyond’, ‘House Of Fun’ and ‘Baggy Trousers’. Their appeal endures to this day, Madness’ latter-day concerts having become fun-packed celebrations of one of the best-loved songbooks in British pop. Like most bands Madness had their trials and tribulations, including band disputes, accusations of racism and an eventual split. But by then they had become a unique part of British pop history. In this book, John Reed tells their colourful story with a perceptive industry eye and the help of insights from many insiders and colleagues of the band.

Download or read book The Pope of Camden Town written by Peter R. Brumlik and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1917 and the sun never sets on the British Empire. Less than three miles from London lies a town that is not the recipient of British benevolence or the blessings of the royal sun. Living in the forgotten, disconnected, and rotten appendage of Camden Town are the petulant, stubborn Irish, the distant cousins of the Vikings are who difficult to manage, both in their native land and abroad. Once the home of Charles Dickens, H. G. Wells, and Karl Marx, Camden Town is also the residence of a belligerent Irishman, his ever-suffering wife, and two children. Brendan Ronin, the Pope of Camden Town, is usually found perched on his throne, sending messages to an ignorant world population. His wife, Meg, perfumes her frail body with a dab of cabbage and potato on her wrist. Their daughters, Erin and Fiona, are seeking their own paths in life. But as social discourse begins to overshadow the happy family holding court at 27 Underhill Street, now the future remains even more uncertain than ever. The Pope of Camden Town is the satirical tale of an Irish family living in Camden Town a section of London during World War I.

Download or read book Toward Camden written by Mercy Romero and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Toward Camden, Mercy Romero writes about the relationships that make and sustain the largely African American and Puerto Rican Cramer Hill neighborhood in New Jersey where she grew up. She walks the city and writes outdoors to think about the collapse and transformation of property. She revisits lost and empty houses—her family's house, the Walt Whitman House, and the landscape of a vacant lot. Throughout, Romero engages with the aesthetics of fragment and ruin; her writing juts against idioms of redevelopment. She resists narratives of the city that are inextricable from crime and decline and witnesses everyday lives lived at the intersection of spatial and Puerto Rican diasporic memory. Toward Camden travels between what official reports say and what the city's vacant lots withhold. Duke University Press Scholars of Color First Book Award recipient

Download or read book Camden County New Jersey written by Jeffery M. Dorwart and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jeffery M. Dorwart chronicles more than three centuries of Camden County history. He takes readers on a journey, from the earliest days as a Native American settlement, to the county's important roles in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, Camden City's booms and busts, the county's increasing suburbanization, and concluding with current inner-city revitalization efforts. Dorwart details how the earliest European settlers radically changed the local Native American culture and introduced black slavery. In the Revolutionary War, the county's location directly across the Delaware River from Philadelphia placed it at the crossroads of the American Revolution. Dorwart examines the county's conflicted roles during the Civil War, when the older agrarian population, which held traditional social and economic ties to the slave-owing South, clashed with the increasingly industrialized interests of the urban waterfront, which showed strong Unionist tendencies. He explores the changing demographics of the area as waves of European immigrants came to work in the factories. He surveys the rise and fall of first Camden City, then of the suburbs, as both areas experienced population ebbs and flows. Finally, Dorwart looks at the revitalization efforts of 2000 when Camden County began efforts to reinvent the riverfront community where it all began.

Download or read book People with Dementia at the Heart of Research written by Rachael Litherland and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with dementia are uniquely qualified to discuss the challenges of their condition and the features of effective support, but their voices are all too often drowned out in research and debates about policy. It's time for that to change. Dementia Enquirers is an ambitious and novel programme of work which has tested out what it means for people with dementia to lead research and has developed a new 'driving seat' approach to co-research. This ground-breaking book features 26 research projects led by groups of people with dementia, supported by group facilitators and academics, to make their voices heard. Topics include giving up driving, GP dementia reviews, living alone with dementia, and using AI platforms such as smart speakers. The book also describes how people with dementia shaped the entire programme, and addressed head-on issues such as ethics approval processes and complex research language. A key read for anyone involved in dementia support, this research brings the voices of people with dementia to the fore to explore their experiences of researching the condition.
