Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of a Holy Woman The text which I have cited attributes therefore to woman an aptitude for righteousness that is truly ex ceptional. On its truth depends, I think, the solution of some practical question of the highest moment. Is it true then, that woman may possess the extraordinary stability in righteousness that will make her heart the impregnable stronghold of God's commandments? If it is, her power for good or for evil is almost immeas urable. This is the question I wish to submit to your consideration this evening. Download or read book Holy Feast and Holy Fast written by Caroline Walker Bynum and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1988-01-07 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period between 1200 and 1500 in western Europe, a number of religious women gained widespread veneration and even canonization as saints for their extraordinary devotion to the Christian eucharist, supernatural multiplications of food and drink, and miracles of bodily manipulation, including stigmata and inedia (living without eating). The occurrence of such phenomena sheds much light on the nature of medieval society and medieval religion. It also forms a chapter in the history of women. Previous scholars have occasionally noted the various phenomena in isolation from each other and have sometimes applied modern medical or psychological theories to them. Using materials based on saints' lives and the religious and mystical writings of medieval women and men, Caroline Walker Bynum uncovers the pattern lying behind these aspects of women's religiosity and behind the fascination men and women felt for such miracles and devotional practices. She argues that food lies at the heart of much of women's piety. Women renounced ordinary food through fasting in order to prepare for receiving extraordinary food in the eucharist. They also offered themselves as food in miracles of feeding and bodily manipulation. Providing both functionalist and phenomenological explanations, Bynum explores the ways in which food practices enabled women to exert control within the family and to define their religious vocations. She also describes what women meant by seeing their own bodies and God's body as food and what men meant when they too associated women with food and flesh. The author's interpretation of women's piety offers a new view of the nature of medieval asceticism and, drawing upon both anthropology and feminist theory, she illuminates the distinctive features of women's use of symbols. Rejecting presentist interpretations of women as exploited or masochistic, she shows the power and creativity of women's writing and women's lives.

Book Jewish Tales of Holy Women

Download or read book Jewish Tales of Holy Women written by Yitzhak Buxbaum and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-11-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a "holy woman," or a holy man for that matter? According to the Jewish mystics, a holy person is someone who has not lost the holiness that every baby is born with. A holy person is someone who fulfills it. Stories about Jewish holy women have rarely been collected in such an engaging and entertaining form. The tales display a specifically female Jewish spirituality, giving us a peek into a world of devotional beauty that focuses on kindness. These stories of laughter and tears, humility and bravery, striving and trance, have an appeal spanning the denominational spectrum: they are spiritual nourishment for the soul. The rabbis say there are both male and female angels and angels are on earth as well as in heaven. These tales enhance our appreciation of the female angels on earth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary of Bethany: A Talk to Christian Young Women This characteristic picture of Mary is one that every Christian young woman ought to keep framed in her heart. It is full of suggestion. At Christ's feet is the place of discipleship, where one learns the lessons the Master has to teach, where one's soul receives the blessings he has to give. It is the place, too, of shelter and comfort, to which one should flee in danger and sorrow. Then it is the place of devotion, of consecration, of service. We will study in order each of these three scenes in which Mary appears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Heart Talks on Holiness Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heart Talks on Holiness Classic Reprint written by S. L. Brengle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart Talks on Holiness is a text focused on religion and spirituality which essentially stands as a sequel to S. L. Brengle's book "Helps to Holiness." In addition to her work as a renowned and prolific author, Brengle was also a well known commissioner in the Salvation Army. As a preacher and spiritual guide on the doctrine of Holiness, Brengle made it her life's work to write and publish works focused on that which she devoted her life to: the love and worship of God. This book presents itself as a spiritual guide for individuals who already believe in Christianity but want assistance in focusing and promoting their faith. Brengle believes deeply in salvation and the grace of God and she crafted this book with the goal of helping men and women achieve salvation. A tall order in some regards, Brengle's main objective is that all readers will be inspired to enjoy salvation and through that, experience happiness and joy on Earth. Brengle uses this book to explain to readers the basics of Holiness, several religious tenets, how to study and understand the bible, and the value in embracing spiritual power. Heart Talks on Holiness is a spiritually themed book with a primary focus on Christianity and the religious concepts of Holiness and salvation. Brengle's passion for the topic flows through each page and each chapter - compelling the reader to read forward and absorb excitement from the text. This book is a great read for individuals inspired by spirituality and Christianity along with students of religion. This book would also be entertaining for Bible study groups, and Christian organizations interested in the work of S. L. Brengle. Book Becoming Women of the Word

Download or read book Becoming Women of the Word written by Sarah Christmyer and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (third place, scripture-popular studies). The women God called to bring his chosen people into the world were ordinary women who struggled with emptiness, oppression, infertility, and loss—yet who found strength and hope in God. In her first book, Sarah Christmyer—codeveloper of The Great Adventure Catholic Bible study program—pairs the stories of key Old Testament women with stories of women she has known to show us how we can hear God, say yes to his call, and share him with the world just as they did. Breaking open the scriptures to reveal the historical, cultural, and biblical context in which Old Testament women lived, Sarah Christmyer breathes new life into their stories and makes their lives surprisingly relatable. In the process, she shares stories from her own faith journey and the lives of family and friends to show how the same principles that turned ordinary women into heroines of the faith are true for our lives today. Each chapter of Becoming Women of the Word highlights the spiritual legacy of one or more women in the Old Testament. Their world was vastly different from ours, yet they faced the same questions we do: when we can’t feel God’s presence, where do we find help? When our world is collapsing, where is God? Why should we trust him? How can we trust him? Christmyer simply and clearly draws from the lives of these women important principles that help us to trust—even as we struggle with doubt. For example: Through Eve, we learn to hold on to God’s promise even when we fail. Sarah reminds us to wait on God’s timing to make us fruitful. Miriam, the sister of Moses, shows how to lead by example. Ruth and Esther challenge us to see womanhood as a gift. Hannah and Judith inspire us to trust God even in matters of life and death. These unforgettable portraits create a colorful mosaic of faith, encouraging us to mine God’s Word for spiritual treasure and to pass on the gift.

Book Holy Women Holy Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : Church Publishing,
  • Publisher : Church Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0898696372
  • Pages : 798 pages

Download or read book Holy Women Holy Men written by Church Publishing, and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.
