WILL POPULATION CONTINUE ALWAYS, ON THE WHOLE, 1NCREAS--ING? OR IS ITS PROGRESS, JN THE CIRCUMSTANCES NATURALLT CONNECTED WITH IT, INFINITE, OR LIMITED ONLY BY A FAILURE THE DUE QUANTITY OF SUBSISTENCE? Having answered the question, Has population been hitherto Always, on the whole, increasing? in the affirmative; we have next to answer, if we can, the other question, Will it always, oil the whole, hereafter increase, till subsistence fails? Some may think that the answer to this is naturally involved in that of the former, and that as we can only conjecture what will be from what has been, we are warranted in answering, that it will continue to increase, either till the present system of things is altered, or till it is checked by a deficiency of subsistence. This, however, is to take for granted, that the circumstances of population will always remain somewhat similar to what they have been: but this can by no means be admitted in one essential point. The most powerful of all the depopulating causes, which arises naturally out of an increase of population itsetf, will hereafter" continue increasing in influence in proportion as the population becomes more crowded, till it operates universally with a force never yet felt, but in some small highly-peopled states. On the other hand, some of the most powerful stimulative populating causes, as those arising from new colonizations, will in the same degree lose their vigour, till they entirely fail. Not only all the regular, but all the occasional depopulating causes, have hitherto been overpowed by the regular populating ones, assisted Ey the occasional. The various states of society, existing over the extent of the globe, admitted this. Population has been. able not only to...

Book The Malthusian Controversy

Download or read book The Malthusian Controversy written by Kenneth Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1951, focuses on the hitherto ignored contemporary critics of Malthus, giving them the attention they so rightly deserve. Dr Smith traces the Malthusian controversy step by step, from 1798, the date of the First Essay, to the death of Malthus in 1834. Investigating the precursors of Malthus and the genesis of the Malthusian Theory of Population, the book subjects the theory to a searching analysis in the light of not only contemporary criticism, but also subsequent developments and modern ideas. In addition, the book examines the application of the theory to the doctrine of perfectibility, to wages, to the poor laws, to emigration, and to the birth control movement. Fully annotated and written in an easy style, this work is indispensable to serious students of both population problems and the development of economic thought. Broad in scope, The Malthusian Controversy presents a new perspective on the most urgent of modern issues, the problem of world population.

Book Malthus Medicine Morality

Download or read book Malthus Medicine Morality written by Brian Dolan and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Robert Malthus's reputation has lately been rehabilitated in the fields of social biology, demography, environmentalism, and economics. In the midst of this current interest and with the chance to mark the occasion of the bicentenary of the first edition of the Essay on Population (1798), the contributors to this volume take this timely opportunity to examine the historical conditions in which Malthus constructed his theory, and in which the concept of a 'Malthusian' and 'Neo-Malthusian' philosophy first emerged. The essays redress the balance between Malthus's original argument, the immediate responses to Malthus by medics and theologians in Britain and on the Continent, and some of the ways that his ideas were later attacked, appropriated, or misrepresented. Included here are essays that not only re-evaluate the development of Malthus's theory, but also offer critical perspectives on the generation of the 'Malthusian league' and debates about birth control in Britain and on the Continent, and Malthus's influence on the emergence of social science and Darwinian evolutionary biology.
