Book The Hand painted Photographs of Charles Henry Sawyer

Download or read book The Hand painted Photographs of Charles Henry Sawyer written by Carol Begley Gray and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fine art of Hand-Painted photography by New England's favorite son photographer, Charels Henry Sawyer (1868-1954), is well presented in this biography. Twelve beautiful color plates, and numerous black and white images, are included in this book. Born in Norridgewock, Maine, in 1868, Charles Henry Sawyer began his art career as a portrait artist, painter and photographer in Providence, Rhode Island. In the late 1890s, he worked as a pencil artist for the New York Tribune and as a photographer and painter with Wallace Nutting, the best known painter of black and white photographs. The book chronicles the development of photography, beginning with black and white Daguerreotypes in 1839 through the introduction of color film in the mid 1930s. The painting of black and white photographs was done to correct errors in the print; to change the composition of the print; but primarily, to add color to otherwise black and white images. This volume includes an updated value guide.

Book Adirondack Photographers 1850 1950

Download or read book Adirondack Photographers 1850 1950 written by Sally E. Svenson and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the new technology of photography was emerging throughout the United States in the mid-nineteenth century, it caught hold in the scenic Adirondack region of upstate New York. Young men and a few women began to experiment with cameras as a way to earn their livings with local portrait work. From photographing individuals, some expanded their subject matter to include families and groups, homes, streetscapes, landmarks, workplaces, and important events—from town celebrations to presidential visits, train wrecks, floods, and fires. These photographers from within and just beyond the park’s borders, as well as those based in the urban areas from which tourists came to the Adirondacks, have been central in defining the region. Adirondack Photographers, 1850–1950 is a comprehensive look at the first one hundred years of photography through the lives of those who captured this unique rural region of New York State. Svenson’s fascinating biographical dictionary of more than two hundred photographers is enriched with over seventy illustrations. While the popularity of some of these photographers is reflected in the number of their images held in the collections of the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the Getty Museum, little is known about the diverse backgrounds of the individuals behind their work. A compilation of captivating stories, Adirondack Photographers provides a vivid, intimate account of the evolution of photography, as well as an unusual perspective on Adirondack history.

Book Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography written by John Hannavy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 1630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography is the first comprehensive encyclopedia of world photography up to the beginning of the twentieth century. It sets out to be the standard, definitive reference work on the subject for years to come. Its coverage is global – an important ‘first’ in that authorities from all over the world have contributed their expertise and scholarship towards making this a truly comprehensive publication. The Encyclopedia presents new and ground-breaking research alongside accounts of the major established figures in the nineteenth century arena. Coverage includes all the key people, processes, equipment, movements, styles, debates and groupings which helped photography develop from being ‘a solution in search of a problem’ when first invented, to the essential communication tool, creative medium, and recorder of everyday life which it had become by the dawn of the twentieth century. The sheer breadth of coverage in the 1200 essays makes the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography an essential reference source for academics, students, researchers and libraries worldwide.
