Download or read book And Then You re Dead written by Cody Cassidy and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gleefully gruesome look at the actual science behind the most outlandish, cartoonish, and impossible deaths you can imagine What would happen if you took a swim outside a deep-sea submarine wearing only a swimsuit? How long could you last if you stood on the surface of the sun? How far could you actually get in digging a hole to China? Paul Doherty, senior staff scientist at San Francisco’s famed Exploratorium Museum, and writer Cody Cassidy explore the real science behind these and other fantastical scenarios, offering insights into physics, astronomy, anatomy, and more along the way. Is slipping on a banana peel as hazardous to your health as the cartoons imply? Answer: Yes. Banana peels ooze a gel that turns out to be extremely slippery. Your foot and body weight provide the pressure. The gel provides the humor (and resulting head trauma). Can you die by shaking someone’s hand? Answer: Yes. That’s because, due to atomic repulsion, you’ve never actually touched another person’s hand. If you could, the results would be as disastrous as a medium-sized hydrogen bomb. If you were Cookie Monster, just how many cookies could you actually eat in one sitting? Answer: Most stomachs can hold up to sixty cookies, or around four liters. If you eat or drink more than that, you’re approaching the point at which the cookies would break through the lesser curvature of your stomach, and then you’d better call an ambulance to Sesame Street.

Download or read book Rules of Game written by Andrew Gordon and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Admiral Sir John Woodward. When published in hardcover in 1997, this book was praised for providing an engrossing education not only in naval strategy and tactics but in Victorian social attitudes and the influence of character on history. In juxtaposing an operational with a cultural theme, the author comes closer than any historian yet to explaining what was behind the often described operations of this famous 1916 battle at Jutland. Although the British fleet was victorious over the Germans, the cost in ships and men was high, and debates have raged within British naval circles ever since about why the Royal Navy was unable to take advantage of the situation. In this book Andrew Gordon focuses on what he calls a fault-line between two incompatible styles of tactical leadership within the Royal Navy and different understandings of the rules of the games.

Book excerpt: The "masterfully chilling" novel that inspired the hit AMC series (Entertainment Weekly). The men on board the HMS Terror — part of the 1845 Franklin Expedition, the first steam-powered vessels ever to search for the legendary Northwest Passage — are entering a second summer in the Arctic Circle without a thaw, stranded in a nightmarish landscape of encroaching ice and darkness. Endlessly cold, they struggle to survive with poisonous rations, a dwindling coal supply, and ships buckling in the grip of crushing ice. But their real enemy is even more terrifying. There is something out there in the frigid darkness: an unseen predator stalking their ship, a monstrous terror clawing to get in. “The best and most unusual historical novel I have read in years.” —Katherine A. Powers, Boston Globe

Book DD 891

Download or read book DD 891 written by John G. Denham and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-05-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DD 891 Captain John G. Denham, USN (Retired) There was no DD891. The Martin DD891, is a mythical Gearing class destroyer that represents nearly all of the "long-hull Sumner" class destroyers completed as Gearings; the last wartime designed "tin cans." Although 152 were originally ordered, only 98 were built and most were completed after WWII. The officers and enlisted personnel assigned to the Gearing class destroyers were impressed with the living and working spaces and the arrangement of the modern equipment installed. With an allowance of a dozen officers and over 300 in the crew, operational capability and working conditions were improved as was the "hotel" support features for all on board. The chiefs were still forward and the "snipes" were aft; no change. "New constructions" drew the best people and therefore the original crew of the Martin DD891 consisted of experienced leaders and qualified petty officers in all key position. As time passed, change was the only constant factor. The demands of naval operations required that the 25 hour day remain routine in destroyers. USS meant underway Saturday and Sunday. For 30 years the Martin aged and survived with competent leadership and dedicated crews. DD891, is not just about a ship, but its people and the families that support those who chose the Navy and its life. The Martin was a unit in a four ship destroyer division that was part of a squadron in a flotilla that made up the Pacific fleet destroyer force. As each crew member is a part of a team, each destroyer is part of a mission oriented task organization and must be ready when needed and prepared to function when called. The Martin and her people successfully fulfilled many missions for 30 years. The Martin, as were her cohorts, was commissioned to keep the peace, therefore the officers and men spent the majority of their time deterring those enemies threatening that objective. From beginning to end, " Ready" was the Martin's motto. The main characters are real, except for the names. The events and times are factual as are most of the scenarios however, some spice, humor and embellishment was added to preserve relevance.

Book Ship Dioramas

  • Author : David Griffith
  • Publisher : Seaforth Publishing

  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Ship Dioramas written by David Griffith and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the art of displaying waterline models. By their very nature, ship models that do not show the full hull and are not mounted on an artificial stand cry out for a realistic setting. At its most basic this can be just a representation of the sea itself, but to give the model a context – even to tell some sort of story – is far more challenging. This is the province of the diorama, which at its most effective is a depiction of a scene or an event in which the ship model takes centre stage. As with a painting, the composition is a vital element and this book devotes much of its space to what works and what does not, and illustrates with photographic examples why the best maritime dioramas have visual power and how to achieve that impact. Individual chapters explore themes like having small craft in attendance on the main subject, multiple-model scenarios, dockyards and naval bases, and the difficulties of replicating naval combat realistically. It also looks at both extremes of modelmaking ambition: the small single-ship exposition and the largest, most ambitions projects of the kind meant for museum display. The book concludes with some of the most advanced concepts – how to create drama and the illusion of movement, and how to manipulate perspective. Illustrated throughout with colour photos, the more abstract discussion is backed with practical 'how to' sections, so anyone who builds waterline ship model will benefit from reading this book. As featured in 'Glasgow Now'.

Book excerpt: "It was commonly accepted that judging a book by it’s cover was just about the rudest and un-wisest thing you could do. But that’s not going to stop you, is it? And that’s something I’ve always respected about you. If the ideas of the trials and tribulations of a pair of wizards travelling through time and space do nothing for you, then you’ve most likely already put this book down. To those who remain, may I just take a moment to introduce Kiko and Kara. Kiko was a bookish, kind (but slightly bizarre) human girl with a razor-sharp intellect and Kara was the kind of Half-Elf to punch me in the face if she heard me say anything bad about her, so I won’t be doing that. Both girls lived a life of magic and mystery on the thirteenth paralleled Earth, which was part of the Thirteenth parallel Universe; which is where this book is set."

Book Endless Novelties of Extraordinary Interest

Download or read book Endless Novelties of Extraordinary Interest written by Doug Macdougall and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping tale of exploration aboard H.M.S. Challenger, an expedition that laid the foundations for modern oceanography From late 1872 to 1876, H.M.S. Challenger explored the world’s oceans. Conducting deep sea soundings, dredging the ocean floor, recording temperatures, observing weather, and collecting biological samples, the expedition laid the foundations for modern oceanography. Following the ship’s naturalists and their discoveries, earth scientist Doug Macdougall engagingly tells a story of Victorian-era adventure and ties these early explorations to the growth of modern scientific fields. In this lively story of discovery, hardship, and humor, Macdougall examines the work of the expedition’s scientists, especially the naturalist Henry Moseley, who rigorously categorized the flora and fauna of the islands the ship visited, and the legacy of John Murray, considered the father of modern oceanography. Macdougall explores not just the expedition itself but also the iconic place that H.M.S. Challenger has achieved in the annals of ocean exploration and science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity, obsessed with materialism and devoid of spirituality, is in trouble. Seeking a path around territorial restrictions imposed in a shaky peace with an unseen race humans call the Necromancers, Task Force RF-19.2 has twice blundered into the path of a second alien species’ invasion force on its way to Earth, answering a challenge of honor by mortal combat from its own enemy. Now, beaten and seriously mauled, the remnants of Task Force RF-19 and its fleet have retreated to a pre-established emergency rendezvous, a planet known as DeGeller 5, only to meet other human forces fleeing Earth after this new enemy’s cleansing bombardment of their Ancient Battlefield. Regrouping at DeGeller, the situation deteriorates further when a second invasion force crosses their path on its way to Earth also. Physical appearances aside, the two enemies are almost total technological opposites, one side wholeheartedly embracing technology, the other wholeheartedly rejecting it. The situation becomes even more convoluted when the human refugees receive a request for military assistance from a third race, enslaved to one of the two enemies. Against this backdrop 2nd Lt. Zhou Wen discovers he is the only heir to humanity’s imperial throne; he must face a rebellious Mother Church, the suffocating imperial bureaucracy, his doubts about the succession and his claim to the throne, all while returning to Earth to confront two mortal enemies hellbent on destroying each other. In doing so, Zhou Wen discovers the eternal secret of humanity the two combatants are fighting over.
