Book Government Spending Facts 2

Download or read book Government Spending Facts 2 written by Isabella Horry and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study analyses spending by the three levels of government - federal, provincial, and local - and constructs a profile of who benefits from government expenditure." "In 1990 government redistributed 10.0% of GDP through social programs (other than CPP), an increase from 6.7% in 1970. Interest payments made up 20.3% of government spending in 1990, up from 10.4% in 1970. The province that received the least total government spending per capita in 1990 was British Columbia, at $10,647. The province that received the most spending per capita was Nova Scotia, at $12,372, while of all governments, the Territories received the most from all levels of government, at $27,707 per capita. All provinces have experienced an increase in the fraction of government spending to total provincial GDP since 1970. Social security payments for all the Atlantic provinces amount to only 10.8% of total social security payments made in the country. Of the provincial/territorial governments, the Territories spend the most per capita, followed by Alberta, while Prince Edward Island spends the least. Ontario receives 60% of all federal interest paid on the outstanding public debt, and yet it pays just 45% of the taxes collected by the federal government."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Does Alberta Have a Spending Problem

Download or read book Does Alberta Have a Spending Problem written by Kenneth J. Boessenkool and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alberta spent the better part of the last decade of the 20th century becoming the paragon of fiscal virtue. Following a 1993 election fought over the nature of Alberta's spending, the Alberta government set the standard for having a clean and closely controlled fiscal framework by vigorously reducing its expenditures. And it reaped the rewards by paying down its debt and making tax cuts that enhanced critical productivity, including the move to a single rate of personal income tax.The recent return to deficits in Alberta has raised the question of whether the province has a spending problem. The answer to this question has important implications for how the province addresses its deficit. If Alberta has a spending problem, it makes sense to focus on expenditure reductions to reduce the deficit. If not, then relying on economic growth or tax increases might be the appropriate response.

Book Eric J Hanson s Financial History of Alberta 1905 1950

Download or read book Eric J Hanson s Financial History of Alberta 1905 1950 written by Eric John Hanson and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric Hanson Albertas first, and arguably greatest, economist wrote a number of influential books on federal-provincial relations, education finance, health care finance, and energy economics. His doctoral thesis was entitled A Financial History of Alberta, 1905-1950 and was found by Paul Boothe at the University of Alberta library while Boothe was doing research on Alberta government spending almost forty-five years after it was written. This "forgotten gem" sheds light on the institutional, economic, and public development of the province from a financial perspective. With a detailed and analytical introduction, this edited work provides historical perspective on the perennial problems facing Alberta's fiscal managers: wildly fluctuating revenues, in-migration, seemingly insatiable demands for infrastructure, high-quality public services, and resistance to taxes while exuding an optimistic attitude for the future.
