Download or read book The Ancient Quarrel Between Philosophy and Poetry written by Raymond Barfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings, philosophy's language, concepts and imaginative growth have been heavily influenced by poetry and poets. Drawing on the work of a wide range of thinkers throughout the history of Western philosophy, Raymond Barfield explores the pervasiveness of poetry's impact on philosophy and, conversely, how philosophy has sometimes resisted or denied poetry's influence. Although some thinkers, like Giambatista Vico and Nietzsche, praised the wisdom of poets, and saw poetry and philosophy as mutually beneficial pursuits, others resented, diminished or eliminated the importance of poetry in philosophy. Beginning with the famous passage in Plato's Republic in which Socrates exiles the poets from the city, this book traces the history of the ancient quarrel between philosophy and poetry through the works of thinkers in the Western tradition ranging from Plato to the work of the contemporary thinker Mikhail Bakhtin.

Download or read book Written Texts and the Rise of Literate Culture in Ancient Greece written by Harvey Yunis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the sixth through the fourth centuries BCE, the landmark developments of Greek culture and the critical works of Greek thought and literature were accompanied by an explosive growth in the use of written texts. By the close of the classical period, a new culture of literacy and textuality had come into existence alongside the traditional practices of live oral discourse. New avenues for human activity and creativity arose in this period. The very creation of the 'classical' and the perennial use of Greece by later European civilizations as a source of knowledge and inspiration would not have taken place without the textual innovations of the classical period. This book considers how writing, reading and disseminating texts led to new ways of thinking and new forms of expression and behaviour. The individual chapters cover a range of phenomena, including poetry, science, religions, philosophy, history, law and learning.

Download or read book The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours written by Gregory Nagy and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a hero? The ancient Greeks who gave us Achilles and Odysseus had a very different understanding of the term than we do today. Based on the legendary Harvard course that Gregory Nagy has taught for well over thirty years, The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours explores the roots of Western civilization and offers a masterclass in classical Greek literature. We meet the epic heroes of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, but Nagy also considers the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the songs of Sappho and Pindar, and the dialogues of Plato. Herodotus once said that to read Homer was to be a civilized person. To discover Nagy’s Homer is to be twice civilized. “Fascinating, often ingenious... A valuable synthesis of research finessed over thirty years.” —Times Literary Supplement “Nagy exuberantly reminds his readers that heroes—mortal strivers against fate, against monsters, and...against death itself—form the heart of Greek literature... [He brings] in every variation on the Greek hero, from the wily Theseus to the brawny Hercules to the ‘monolithic’ Achilles to the valiantly conflicted Oedipus.” —Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly
Download or read book The Iliad The Odyssey written by Homer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iliad: Join Achilles at the Gates of Troy as he slays Hector to Avenge the death of Patroclus. Here is a story of love and war, hope and despair, and honor and glory. The recent major motion picture Helen of Troy staring Brad Pitt proves that this epic is as relevant today as it was twenty five hundred years ago when it was first written. So journey back to the Trojan War with Homer and relive the grandest adventure of all times. The Odyssey: Journey with Ulysses as he battles to bring his victorious, but decimated, troops home from the Trojan War, dogged by the wrath of the god Poseidon at every turn. Having been away for twenty years, little does he know what awaits him when he finally makes his way home. These two books are some of the most import books in the literary cannon, having influenced virtually every adventure tale ever told. And yet they are still accessible and immediate and now you can have both in one binding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth and Influence, of Classical Greek Poetry: Lectures Delivered in 1892 on the Percy Turnbull Memorial Foundation in the Johns Hopkins University The Percy Turnbull Memorial Lectureship of Poetry was established in the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, in 1889, by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Turnbull, in memory of their son, Percy Graeme Turnbull. The first course was given 1891, by Mr. Edmund Clarence Stedman, on "The Nature and Elements of Poetry," and was followed, in 1892, by the course contained in this volume. The lectures are printed as they were delivered, with the exception of a few very slight changes. Their aim is to exhibit concisely, but clearly, the leading characteristics of the best classical Greek poets, and to illustrate the place of ancient Greece in the general history of poetry. I should like the book to be considered as a member of a series, to which other volumes, by other writers, will doubtless, in due course, be added; a series deriving unity from the Turnbull foundation, and associated with the University, whose place among elder sisters is already one of such peculiar distinction.
