This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malthus wrote The Grounds of an Opinion on the Policy of Restricting the Importation of Foreign Corn in 1815. He had presented his opinion on Corn Laws in England the previous year, deciding that free trade should be upheld. Yet, in this treatise, he reasons that some restrictions are of value. Malthus is known for his theories on the effect of population growth on an economy. THOMAS ROBERT MALTHUS (1766-1834) was an English classical economist, educated at Jesus College in Cambridge. In 1798, he took orders as a curate at Albury in Surrey, and became a Professor of History and Political Economy at the East India Company College (now known as Haileybury) in 1805. His most notable work is An Essay on the Principle of Population, with six editions published between 1798 to 1826.

The professed object of the Observations on the Corn Laws, which I published in the spring of 1814, was to state with the strictest impartiality the advantages and disadvantages which, in the actual circumstances of our present situation, were likely to attend the measures under consideration, respecting the trade in corn. A fair review of both sides of the question, without any attempt to conceal the peculiar evils, whether temporary or permanent, which might belong to each, appeared to me of use, not only to assist in forming an enlightened decision on the subject, but particularly to prepare the public for the specific consequences which were to be expected from that decision, on whatever side it might be made. Such a preparation, from some quarter or other, seemed to be necessary, to prevent those just discontents which would naturally have arisen, if the measure adopted had been attended with results very different from those which had been promised by its advocates, or contemplated by the legislature...

Book excerpt: Observations on the Effects of the Corn Laws, and of a Rise or Fall in the Price of Corn on the Agriculture and General Wealth of the Country By Thomas R. Malthus In his Observations on the Effects of the Corn Laws, Thomas Robert Malthus discusses the circumstances surrounding the proposed laws on the foreign grain market, called the Corn Laws of 1815. Malthus aimed to inform the members of Parliament as they voted on banning the sale foreign grains until the price of British grain was increased. The pamphlet captures a fascinating moment in history with Malthus's commentary on free trade as it affected British economy at that time. Book Ricardo and the History of Japanese Economic Thought

Download or read book Ricardo and the History of Japanese Economic Thought written by Susumu Takenaga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ricardo’s theories were introduced in fragments in Japan after the Meiji restoration of 1868 and his work came into prominence late in comparison to other major thinkers figuring in the history of economic thought. The book seeks to analyse the studies in Japan from the year 1920 to the end of the 1930s – during the time before the outbreak of the Second World War, when even the study of classical economics became difficult. The book covers different aspects of his works and contains elements which may be interesting to foreign and even Japanese readers today without necessarily coming under the influence of Marx’s reading. It presents works on Ricardo that are at present, wholly unknown to the Ricardo scholars and more generally to the historians of economic thought outside Japan. This book is an essential read on the history of economic thought in Japan.
